View Full Version : Yup, another ? about a record...
birddog 05-03-2008, 12:43 PM Promo copys/not for sale/ etc lp's, are they the same quality of pressing as the regular release, and is there a difference in value? How about when there are stickers on the covers, like this one in the pic? Collectors like these, or hate these, 'cause it messes up the cover? Just wondering, since I have a few promo's, but no regular releases to compare them with.
Promo copies will be from the first pressings, so that gives them an edge (fresh stamper, fresh master tape, etc.).
Saint Johnny 05-03-2008, 04:06 PM Promo collecting is a whole world unto itself. It really depends on the specific artist and the specific release. Some promo copies of certain records are highly sought after, and worth exorbitant amounts of money. Others are worth about the same price as a stock copy, and sometimes though it is rare, a promo may be worth less, than the stock. Though that usually only applies to singles.
HTH
birddog 05-03-2008, 07:15 PM I figured the obvious ones like Elvis or the Beatles would be collectible, but I imagine the commons are plentiful for most releases. Good info guys, a big help! I have a few promo's, simply because that was all I could find of the LP I wanted at the time....

Usually, but not always. Back in the 60s, some record companies sometimes decided to re-promote older records.
Mr. Lin 05-03-2008, 10:56 PM Although some are apparently sought after, I often find them annoying and the most common of many artists. Cutouts and hole punches are the worst, what a terrible idea.
funny
i picked up an Al Hirt Promo Record today with the big sticker across the front of the cover. Its in really great shape and at the same time was another copy that didn't have the sticker but the vinyl was in terrible shape. I'm glad i didn't swap out the cover and better vinyl.
hahahaa
KentTeffeteller 05-04-2008, 09:36 PM Hi,
Promos can be worth more than a stock copy, sometimes less. White Label/Promotional Labels are most desireable. If you have Timing strips/programming strips, don't remove them. For the most part, Promo records are early pressings off the stampers and often better pressed than stock copies. Also, sometimes rare mono versions of late 1960's era records are promo only. Note: Beatles/Elvis LP pressings only had promo stickers as their labels didn't issue much in special promo LP labels. The 45 RPM singles do have special promo labels. Also, some Advance Promo Compact Discs can be collectable also.
VinylHanger 05-04-2008, 11:24 PM I have fouond most of the promos I find to be a bit above the standard copies. Not always, but it is a good chance, so I pick up any that look interesting.
