Cleaning vinyl with the doors open & the puppy found it. Hey, it's AZ. Luckily I had my trusty 5 ml. outer sleeves handy. http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r279/meggy_030/snakey.jpg

is that a rattler?
all we ever get up here are garter snakes.
little harmless things that are amusing to play with for 15 20 minutes before re-releasing.

We get rattlers, but what is worse are water moccasins.

Aw, that sure brings back memories of Arizona! :D
All I find in gear here in Arizona is cockroaches. :sigh: :nono:
We do share our home here with at least two small geckos [Well, geckos are always small! :D ] I like the geckos, and am careful never to hurt them when I see them. They are cute, occasionally make cute noises to say "Hello!", and they eat insects (which we don't want inside the home!), and traditional lore in some cultures says they bring good luck. Not so sure about that, but heck, why not? They don't hurt anyone (bigger than an insect). I wouldn't be so tolerant of visitors like yours, though...... they grow up to be less pleasant! :thumbsdn:
Did you catch it live and release it elsewhere, or is it only good for a dinner snack and fertilizer now?

When I was a very young boy I brought home a copperhead. My Mom was not amused but I think Dad was proud because I was holding it as high as I could and the tail was draggin the ground.Me and my brothers were real good at catching snakes, used to get about a nickel a piece from some local school for them.Welding gloves were a godsend.

Good for you! We even catch and release cockroaches that fly or wander into our place from time to time. Hong Kong is PACKED with cockroaches; there are way, way more of them than there are people, and this is already the most densely-populated land space on the planet. Every time I move into a place here, I go around and systematically put tight screens and such over every drain hole, fill any wall cracks, weatherstrip doors, etc... to keep them out, but some still make it in. Occasionally I've even had one piggy-back a ride inside some vintage audio gear... :sigh:
I think Australia and Arizona are similar, with respect to the number and concentration of beasties that can "get you", although of course Arizona not having a real ocean, lacks the sea-beasties.
Agreed that parts of Africa are the absolute worst. NOWHERE has as many stinging, biting, toxic critters (and plants, too) per square foot than deep jungle, and the African jungles are the worst of all, with the possible (probable?) exception of Papua New Guinea. Added to the insect pests and snakes and toxic plants are whole slew of parasites, and even the bacteria seem to be the worst (Ebola Zaire, for example). Going in the other direction, as you move out of jungles into more open grasslands, you may encounter additional bigger dangers like lions and cape buffalo... :thumbsdn: Of course, let's not forget the poachers and smugglers and bush-crazies... Exciting to visit with a proper safari, but no place for the amateur (or anyone, really) to "play Tarzan!" :nono:
Speaking of which, I just got a 4-movie boxed set of 1930s Tarzan movies starring Johnny Weissmueller, on LaserDisc! [Now this is an audio-related post, too! :D ]

Here it seems the rattlers do everything they can to avoid people. I've spent a lot of time out in the brush fishing and have stumbled across only a few .Good thing you were around, you know how dogs are and one bite from that baby may have been the end. A friend of a friend lost a dog that way up on the middle fork of the Powder river , near where the "hole in the wall" gang used to hide out. Great fishing there but a hell of a climb to get to the water, about a 1/4 mile damn near verticle. I remember hearing a what we presumed to be a mountain lion as we sat around the camp fire. Great fun about 25 years ago, we caught about 150 fish between three of us, me being the stragler and only catching 40.

Ditto the copperheads, lots of them around.
Local folks claim there are cottonmouths on the lakes around here, but really doubt it. Biologists say "no". There are, however, some really freaky water snakes that put on a real good impersonation of a cottonmouth. Same look, markings, everything. Close enough for me!

All this is reminding me of the big surprise I got when I opened up my SX-780 when I first got it. 20-odd-cell paper wasp nest attached to the underside of the metal grille:yikes: Thank God it was empty. I might be able to dig up a pic...

Australia is the only continent where venomous snake species out number non-venomous. I have quite a few snakes from the Australia region, but no venomous ones.
Found a black widow spider on my front door yesterday. Caught it and put it outside. I hope that doesn't mean they have returned to my basement. Every spring up until about 4 years ago we'd have a batch of hatchling black widows in the basement. I was good and would take them outside whenever I saw them, but I was not unhappy when they apparently abandoned my basement as a nursery.
