I was going through all my CD based players, including games consoles, and I came across my old Sega CD. Not vintage, but vintage in the gaming world.

It's the tray loading model.

Hooked it up to my Onkyo 4500 MKII, and what a freakin shock.

Let me first explain how the Sega Genesis and Sega CD handle audio. When connecting to the Genesis for audio, it internally can mix CD sound to it's own audio output. The Sega CD has it's own RCA jacks, and normally, it's CD only sound, but it has a mixing cable to allow Genesis sound with CD sound, with the CD sound in it's full, but it will have the noisy Genesis sound in it too. This only applies to the original Genesis (with volume slider), and original Sega CD (tray loading).

So with that in mind, i connected the onkyo to the Sega CD directly with no mixing cable, thus no crappy audio noise from the Genesis, and DAMN, it sounds niiiiiiice for a first gen CD console.. Even my PS2 can't compete in sound quality.

Only crappy issue, is when the Sega is plugged into my TV, a 60hz hum bleeds over. But disconnecting the AV cable on the back of the console remedies that instantly.

:scratch2: My friend has one of these and a sega saturn, and a PS1, PS2 and soon a PS3, also a dream cast and a first gen DVD player. I have an early CDP (from 1986). I think it may be time for a shoot out. :D

I do know that the tray loader Sega CDs use a Sony optical pickup (but here some run on JVC pickups). No idea who makes the DAC though.

Cool. I just picked up a Dreamcast; been too busy playing Crazy Taxi to check it's CDP capabilities....

No offense, but why did you get a Dreamcast? Dont take me wrong, I'm a BIG SEGA fan, but the Dreamcast was canceled pretty early on and had only a few games.

As for consoles, apparently the Playstation 1 makes an excellent CD player: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=143130

Awesome, I have a Sega Megadrive 2 (Lots of games for it), A PS1 and a Concord TVG-203 from 1977. It has pong and a few other games and even has its original box! I want to get a Sega master system, that was the first console I ever played. We had Spy VS Spy, Wonder boy, mickey mouse and heaps of other games... miss it.

I need a Master System as well. I fondly remember playing Impossible Mission on it.

Only the early PS1's have the good audio. Later ones, like my 1997 revision, just have poor audio, and a hum I can't get rid of. The ones with good sound have dedicated RCA jacks on the back of it.

I have 3 PS1's & 1 PS2. Get a SPCH-1001 PS1 and give it a spin. It's all I use.

I seem to recall on the mega CD you got a nice 16bit graphic display of the laser running across the cd.

At last count i had 20 plus consoles, including some rarer ones like the 3d0 and the neo geo cd, alas they are all in a box somewhere. I cant say i tested their audiophile capabilities :D

The jaguar cd unit had some very trippy visualisations.

Sega CD/Mega CD can also show CD+G's..

Remember though, only the Tray loading Sega CD has the good audio. To get good CD sound out of a Model 2 Sega CD (top loading), you must use the original Genesis (volume slider), because the smaller Genesis units will shove their buzzy audio into the Sega CD's dedicated RCA jacks, totally screwing it up..

In other words, what you see in my video is best combo, without that "mixing cable", and receiver/amp plugged directly into the Sega CD..
