If you remember, I won a JVC Nivico SRP-473E turntable on Ebay over the weekend:

So on the way home from work today I run into the local goodwill store and what is sitting on the shelf??? A Dual 1015 complete with cover and manual. I scooped it right up for $10. I took it home and spent a good hour giving it a nice surface cleaning. It seems to work well. However, I would like some advice about it.

I think the cartridge is original, it is a Sure. Does it make sense for me to replace it, or should I just change out the needle?

The power cord is pretty ratty looking and I would like to replace it. However, I can't figure out how to get the wire out of the connector. Any advice here? Can I buy another one of those plastic connectors somewhere?

Should I lubricate the mechanisms and if so, what should I use?

Should I disassemble clean and lubricate any part of it?

Which turntable would you keep as your primary?

I am two for two on having Dual's work perfectly after replacing the RCA cables (The RCA cables break easily but are easy to replace). I say plug her in and give it a cycle, if it all works you are good to go. One of my Duals is 44 years old and the other 35, and both work flawlessly. :thmbsp:

See, it works this way. You have one project (coming) and, of course you see three more :) If you had nothing but AK hunger, you couldn't find a deal to save your self.

Just like having a job - you got one, you get offers. You're out of work, you can't even wash cars :(

Anway, take your time. Do them both and listen. The dual will need new patch cables. They don't last and as they get old, they steal the highs and make life less than spectacular. Once all sorted out, they usually sound fine :)

You need to give us a bit more info an the "Shure" that's on it? Which ever one you keep, will be a good thing. The other is likely good enough, after service, to sell here in the classifieds. Someone will want either. You're in a good spot :)

It is a shure m75e. I think the needle is in poor shape. On the patch cables, they look original and I just plugged in ones I use for my CD player. I really want to replace the power cord (and ground wire), but I am having trouble figuring out how to disconnect the original from the plastic connector. There was a lot of sticky crud on the table and more on the cords.

Oohh, I like my little M75 (aka Premier Black). It's not a killer fine cartridge, but it's sweet enough for lots of stuff. I'm running a Turntableneedles.com after market "best value" elliptical stylus and I like it a lot. Mine came with a T2 stylus assembly and that's what I got to replace it. I tried the PE less expensive one, but it did not fit properly.

Just pulls right straight out the front and you litterally stick the new one in without messing up the set-up or anything. Very nice for a machine like the Dual :)

So you suggest I just replace the needle? I was thinking of a Grado Black, like I thought for the JVC table. But, if that isn't much of an upgrade, it doesn't make sense.

Well for the JVC, with the ability to change headshells with mounted cartridges, I'd certainly keep the M75 in a spare shell and used it now and then when you get an LP that wants something a bit different. That's how I use mine. It's not always on. The Grados spend more time in that position. Oh, I'd certainly have a Grado for the JVC too. Even a BLACK will do fine as a choice. And maybe an LPGear AT95SA as a primary? Those three would cover a lot of the basic voicing and allow a pretty wide range of album matching :)

But, I must say I like the M75 and the new after market stylus better than my fairly new M97ex. I'll likely be selling that one or making it a loaner one day. So far it ain't done nothing for me except on one country album :(

Thanks. I actually think I am going to sell the JVC. It is a nice table and received it intact with not damage, but it is a bit wide for the spot I wanted to put it. I am trying to figure out what you ment by the Grados spend more time in that position?

I found that T2 stylus you mentioned. I am going to try that before i buy a new cartridge.

Thanks!

I just built a plinth for a 1015 I pulled out of a console; the motor is noisy as hell but it all works. Thing's a tank, that's for sure. I shitcanned the original RCA's. Has a Shure M44E if I recall. May swap in the M91 I picked up on the 1218 yesterday.

I would think you could lubricate the motor and quiet it down.

I'll answer for Broc, he means the Grado is the one mounted more than others and playing records. Hope that makes more sense NY.
Sorry Broc, you were off-line and NY and I are on.

Thanks. I actually re-read it last night when I was a little less bleary-eyed and got it. As much as i would like a Grado, I am concerned about hum and don't want to blow 60+ on something I will never use.
