Hi,

Yesterday I auditioned a Revox A78 (not the Mk2 version) at a local seller's place. The speakers where not for my taste (Koss, bass reflex, floor standing model from the 70's), but I was impressed by the sound quality of the amplifier in a setting that included also a vintage Akay CD player. I am looking for an amplifier for my bedroom, to complement a pair of AR-3 speakers. The cosmetical aspect of the amp is not that good: one of the knobs is missing the aluminum top (the plastic knob itself is there), and the plastic door on top that covers some gain presents is not in great shape. The wood is in decent shape. The price is fair, but not on the cheap side.

I'd like to request some input regarding experiences on this amp (I've found some in AK, but mostly regarding the Mk2 version and suggesting that the Mk1 wasn't that good), and perhaps suggestions about its synergy with the AR speakers. The CDP is a Philips CD350.

Is it reasonably easy to find the knobs for this amp? Are these the same as those in the A77 R2R tape recorder?

Is Revox still providing the Service Manual for this model?

Many thanks in advance for any input!

Get seperates to drive your AR-3 speakers. Hafler DH220 and 110 preamp. It will cost less and sound better.

I like Revox stuff, but am getting picky in my old age -- I just won't pay too much for anything that doesn't have 'fixable' cosmetic issues. Anything else can pretty much be fixed, but cosmetics, especially on units like this where parts units are few and far between, can't -- makes it a deal breaker for me.

The ReVox A78 is the very first REAL ReVox amp. But there are better systems now (but it was revolutionary).

And not every part is available anymore. But I have an A50 and it is built pretty nice :)

Post this in the "Dollars and Sense" section and you will likely get an answer.
