Last year we saw Ratdog with Steve Kimock. This year Phil Lesh and Friends .. again! It has been a few years. I am really really looking forward to this show. I have not seen Jackie Greene with P&F yet.

Not at the high rent Marcus, but at a side stage. Just like last year.

July 4th 2008. Milwaukee, Summerfest, yeah!!!!!!

Sounds like a grate way to spend July 4th. Looks like the Levon Helm Band is playing with them on a few dates (not the Summerfest stop though).

No dates in the northwest :tears:

I think Jackie Greene will be the opening act for P&F at Summerfest. They have not announced the full stage line-ups yet.

A few years ago when P&F had Warren Haynes in the group Warren played with Gov't Mule, P&F, and the Allman Brothers Band in the same day at Summerfest. I only managed to see the later two acts, work got in the way.

Anyone going? I'll post the opening act when I get the "official" schedule. Always subject to change at the discretion of Summerfest. Like last years Railroad Earth show.

I wish I was going, too far for me. I have heard from different people that it is a great Fest.

And speaking of Railroad Earth, their new album gets released next Tuesday, and from what I have heard off of it so far it is excellent (although I am biased, as they are probably my favorite band these days, along with North Mississippi Allstars).

Yep, June 10th! Amen Corner, looking forward to it. I think they'll release it on eMusic, but I'm not sure. Might have to buy the CD.

I like NMAS also.

RRE is opening for Yonder Mountain at Summerfest, should be a great night! July 1. Too bad you can't make it Rasta.

Last year I got to see RRE, and then head over to see Ratdog w/Steve Kimock on guitar. Like he does with Mark Karan, Bobby never let him really cut loose.

ScramMan2

It was a pretty good show! The first set was rocking, second started out a little slow, but peaked in a hurry. I've got to tell you the vocals are the best I have ever heard from this version of P&F. Awesome harmonies, and they added a female background vocalist (not sure who it is, someone here may know). Not Donna Jean.
Oh ... Jackie Green is incredible.

Set 1: Shakedown Street, Pride Of Cucamonga, Me And My Uncle, Gone Wandering, Sittin On Top Of The World, Loser, Bertha

Set 2: Golden Road, Don't Let Me Down, St. Stephen, William Tell Bridge, The Eleven, The Wheel (tease), Wharf Rat, The Eleven, Scarlet Begonias, I Know You Rider, Sugar Magnolia, E: Ripple

ScramMan2
07-05-2008, 06:25 PM
I forgot to mention .. Lotus was very very good as an opener. I have not seen them before. No vocals, all electronica, more like Disco Biscuits than STS9. They really get the groove going in a hurry. I like that, YMMV, so don't beat me up, thats my taste in the younger jam bands.

The lineup for P&F is Phil Lesh, Jackie Green, Larry Campbell, John Molo And Steve Molitz. With unknown (to me) female background vocalist.

Levon Helm is only opening certain shows for P&F. They did in Chicago.

Yes, I hear Ratdog is touring with Allman Bros, no Milwaukee shows so far. I'd say the crowd was a lot bigger for Ratdog last year, than this years Phil show. I was able to get in and out OK, unlike last year when I was trapped by the huge crowd.

Lotus was a great act to open for P&F. It was just a scheduling deal for this particular stage.

Isn't she touring with Mickey Hart? That show was Sunday 7/6/08, the last night of Summerfest. I went to see him 2 or 3 years ago, but wasn't able to go this year.

The female vocalist is Teresa Williams, a member of the Levon Helm Band, and the wife of Larry Campbell (guitar/strings - you need to see him trade licks with Jackie Greene!!).

Sunday nite at Jones Beach....a perfect, starry nite for a show.

Levon opened and played about an hour...he's doing well for a 68 yr old drummer! and what great mandolin!!!

P & F opened with a Bob song and then did four straight Jerry songs and ended the set with another Bob Song.

Set 2 opened nicely but the highlight for me was St Stephen->the Eleven jam. Haven't heard that live in almost 40 years. Then a nice Dark Star into Born Crosseyed, etc......

Boy do I miss Jerry........

Boy do I miss Jerry........

Set 1: Playin' In The Band * > Bird Song, When You're Walking Away *, The Wheel > Mountains Of The Moon > Uncle John's Band, Sugar Magnolia

Set 2: Jam > China Cat Sunflower * > Fire On The Mountain * > Sugaree *, St. Stephen > Molitz jam > The Eleven, Unbroken Chain > Dark Star > Born Cross-Eyed > Dark Star * > I Know You Rider *, E: Attics Of My Life * > Playin' In The Band (reprise)

Great set! "*" is for Teresa Williams. I'd like to have heard the P&F variation on Fire On The Mountain.

My wife likes Ratdog better than P&F. I like the jamming in P&F more, especially when they break into something out of the blue. As long as they keep Phil's vocals down to a minimum it's a good show.

Thanks for sharing.

Really.
I just saw Ratdog and they were pretty good, but I was surprised haw Bob has mellowed and is doing more of the slower Jerry songs. Plus, have you seen him lately? No more ponytail, but shorter hair and a big grey beard, just like Jerry.

Maybe, but it was really surprising that he was so laid back and didn't do any of his "rockers" (Playing in the Band, One more Saturday Night) . I used to like his stuff more back in the early 1970s, but moved to the Jerry stuff as time went on.

At any rate, I'll be there the next time he comes around:thmbsp:

There are Dead tidbits tossed around here from time to time. I'd really like to see any show at Red Rocks.

I work at Alpine Valley so I see everything coming through there. Closed for the season now.

I've never noticed shows being traded here. If there is something I want I usually DL it off Dead.net, or purchase it.

This may sound dumb but; is "Dead" a Jerry-less (re)incarnation of the Grateful Dead with the living members?

I knew the others were active in various ways such as the Further tours but I did not know that a formal touring band had hit the road. If so pretty Groovy!!:thmbsp:

It would be cool if they could get Peter Green to fill in on guitar. Or to keep it domestic perhaps Barry Melton of Country Joe and The Fish....:music:

That guy in Ratdog has a pretty Jerry Like sound, but those are huge shoes to fill.
I just bought a couple bootleg cassettes yesterday at a garage sale and while listening to the songs it was obvious that Ratdog came close on some songs last week, but Jerry's distinctive tone, style, and presence can only be approximated, not duplicated.

Still close is better than nothing at all

I agree, everything is a rumour until they announce dates.

I feel it in my bones though, I'll be working both the Dead and Phish at Alpine Valley next year. I have to work, I can't afford the ticket prices anymore.

Yes the Dead do tour without Jerry. I've seen them twice at Alpine Valley, last was in 2004 with Warren Haynes filling in on guitar/vocals.

Yes, the surviving "core four" add other players such as Warren Haynes, Joan Osborne, Jeff Chementi, and Rob Barraco. The issue is Bobbie and Phil feud over control.

Ratdog is pretty good. They do a lot of the Dead catalog, and a lot of their own songs. They heavily use a sax and keyboards in their sound. I'm sure you'll like it.

My wife prefers Ratdog over Phil & Friends. I like the extensive jamming in P&F better. Bobbie does not really let any long guitar solos rip. He had Steve Kimock under control last year, and Steve was the heir apparent to Jerry's spot in the Dead after he died (thats how the story goes anyway, never happened).

I don't want to say "I told you so", but this is another prediction I made, and today the first dates were announced.

Phish returns to the stage for three concerts at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia on March 6, 7 and 8, 2009.

There is going to be a full Phish tour this summer. The Dead will come through also. The only think I can't predict is the venues.

I saw Phil & Friends two nights ago and they put on a pretty good show. Phil keeps it closer to the "feel" of the GD, where you never really know which direction it may go next, which results in some stellar jams and the occasional clam. Ratdog is more of a rock band, they play tighter and do not step out and take a whole lot of chances. I have seen both bands many times and while I like them both, Phil & Friends is more to my liking.

Now unfortunately for Phil and his Friends, they were followed by the Allman Brothers on Tuesday evening, and the Allmans just blew Phil and his Friends right out of the building. But then again, Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks are a guitar duo that can hold their own against just about anyone else alive...

Yep.

I was lovin' Ratdog, especially the "Going Down the Road" finale and "Ripple" encore, but when Gregg and the boys took the stage, it was a whole new ballgame.
Here's their setlist:

1. Hot 'Lanta
2. Statesboro Blues
3. Ain't Wastin' Time No More
4. Who to Believe
5. I Ain't Superstitious
6. Black Hearted Woman
7. Soulshine
8. It Takes A Lot To Laugh It Takes A Train To Cry
9. Trouble No More
10. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed >
-> bass -> drums -> In Memory of Elizabeth Reed
Encore
11. Preachin' Blues
with Warren & Derek, acoustic
12. Revival

Seven songs from "Eat a Peach" or earlier :thmbsp: I bought the concert CD for $25 while on a "break" after "Who to Believe" because they were so smokin'.

I thought Jackie and Larry were pretty good, but it didn't seem like they really ever cut loose and jammed the other night. I also think it was Jackie who completely tanked the vocals in Throwing Stones (never my favorite song anyways). They did one song I was not familiar with, someone told me it was a Jackie Greene song, it was good but seemed out of place.

I really do like Phil and his evolving cast of Friends, and I was pleased with the set they played Tuesday night. But when the Allmans came out and flat-out threw down it really made the Phil set look pale in comparison.

Hey Now, I was at that show as well. Hope you did not get rained on. Anyway, that was my first PL & Friends and I thought they were great. Honestly though, I do not see them as any better or worse than Ratdog. If anything Ratdog might get the edge because at least when Bobby sings his own GD songs, there is a reasonable semblance. But Phil is a nicer guy and it was great to see him. You can tell Jackie Greene loves the songs cuz he sings them with heart. Great stuff.

I am in double digits now for ABB gigs and have never seen a bad one. Tuesday night was stellar- best Midnight Rider I have ever heard.

Glad you like Jackie Greene, I thought the same thing. They do add one or two of his songs per show, they fit in well to me. YMMV on this one.

I've seen both P&F and Ratdog enough to know how they run their shows. P&F will start and end some songs with an all out jam and you don't know what direction they will head into. Or do a tease and shoot off in a different dirrection, I like that style.

RD seems to construct their songs to the way the Dead used to do them, with some Kenny Brooks sax solos tucked in for good measure. He is really a talent, if you can get past his "Third Rock From The Sun" look.

I have not seen ABB enough. Sure wish they would do another massive summer tour next year together.

Red Rocks might have them both beat. And then there are the Greek Theaters (Berkeley and LA).

Yea Phil seems to know he sings like a frog so he keeps it minimal. Still, the studio version of Unbroken Chain is one of my favorites.

Next year is the Allmans 40th. The best way to see them is at the Beacon run in New York every March. No opener, so you get 3-4 hours of lysergic blues dynamite.

I saw Phil and Friends the other night live on (I think) the Conan O'brian show. My first taste of any of the GD's solo material. Pretty decent I think. You can definitly hear the GD influence in a big way. Nothing wrong with that.....

Phil And Friends is a decent show because of the tremendous talent and effort of everyone involved. It ain't the Dead, though. It seems like every time they threaten to go off the rails jamming, they get spooked and reign it back in. The shows tend to have a "choreographed concert filmed for PBS" feel.

That and the cynical side of me says that after Phil played with Ryan Adams, he said to himself, "I need a guy like this, but who will work cheap and do what I say." Not to disrespect Jackie Greene, but I calls 'em as I sees 'em.

I like the Ryan Adams analogy. LMAO! Too bad Phil could not control Ryan's personal habits at the time. He's cleaned up a lot (RA), but his shows are still carnivals of odditys. I had to take my wife to see him this past Oct so she could experience it.

My wife would disagree with you about Phil, she thinks the jamming gets out of control. She prefers RatDog. I'd rather see P&F. I think Bobbie puts to much control on the jamming.

Sounds like a grate way to spend July 4th. Looks like the Levon Helm Band is playing with them on a few dates (not the Summerfest stop though).

http://www.phillesh.net/philzonepages/friends_stuff/calendar.html

No dates in the northwest :tears:

I like that new avatar! There is NOTHING that Phil can do to hide the fact that he is a geek. LOL. Not meant to be a bashing on you OK?

Pigpen! Cool.

Have you read Phil's book?
