View Full Version : Todays Punk Playlist
caddisgeek 05-08-2008, 05:27 AM Some of you may have worked out by now that I love punk, in all its forms. I grew up listening to it, and still do (gotta be careful around the younguns, what with all the f-bombs flying about). Who else is listening to punk? I dont care how you define it, Sonic's, Stooges, Saints, Sex Pistols, Sum 41 :scratch2:whatever, what are you spinning?
Today;

wianieq 05-09-2008, 06:27 PM I just picked up London Calling at the used store, plan on putting it on a bit later. Also the Soft Boys new album, though they wouldn't be punk, but would've been lumped in the punk/new wave catagory in the 80's.
Red Stick 05-09-2008, 07:26 PM Just finished the Divinyls "Desperate" and started the Plasmatics "Coup D'Etat":music:

and the accused first 3 (!!!!), though i haven't justified paying 15/cd for something that might not appeal to me like it did when i was in HS.

Definitely worthy of musical sainthood, IMO. :thmbsp:
BTW, my family and I are originally from Queens, and I not only saw Saint Johnny prowling the streets of downtown Manhattan occasionally--waiting for the man, I presume--but I also saw him live, with and without the HBs, a few times. To say that those shows were memorable would be the understatement of the decade. :D

:thmbsp:
I saw JT too many times to count, as well. The first time in a dive bar in Hillside, NJ, in the winter of '79, IIRC. Each show over the years had some particularly memorable, 'typically Johnny Thunders' moment.

My first love is Punk/New Wave, then vintage jazz, 70's rock (soft to metal), classical, raggae, country (especially blue grass), etc, etc. I probably wouldn't put soul, gospel or pop into my rotation. However, I think many on here listen to a very wide band of music.
caddisgeek 08-27-2008, 08:15 PM Does Post Punk count? Joy Division's Closer and Bahaus. Maybe I'll break out some old Sex Pistols.
post punk, proto punk, garage punk, cow punk, hardcore, queercore, grindcore, crust......... all counts as far as I'm concerned
NYListens 08-27-2008, 09:30 PM post punk, proto punk, garage punk, cow punk, hardcore, queercore, grindcore, crust......... all counts as far as I'm concerned
Great. I think I will add Iggy Pop, The Velvet Underground, The Violent Femes, Patti Smith, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Big Audio Dynamite, Public Image Limited, Psychadelic Furs, and New Order all belong on this thread too. Of course there were probably 100s of great punk bands that took the stage at CBGB's back in the day and never made it big time. Although I always hated the roaches that crawled behind me and between my feet.
caddisgeek 08-27-2008, 10:06 PM It was always one of my ambititons to go to CBGB's, I was very sad when I saw it closed down

The bands made the place (especially the unknown ones), as it truly was a PIT. No caddis, but tons of periplaneta americana running everywhere.

pweller 09-23-2008, 01:56 PM Any Living End fans out here? I really like 'Roll On'. Their guitar player is probably the best rock player I've heard, and the sound quality on this album is excellent. I think they are very popular in Australia, but not so much here in the US. Kind of a punkabilly sound if you're not familiar with them.
The only problem with some of the classic punk is that the sound quality can be pretty dismal. Husker Du comes to mind.
I saw a referece to Pere Ubu. I saw them twice. They put on a very good show. I remember they had this electronic widget (it has a name, I just can't remember it at the moment) which sensed the proximity of your hand to the device, and emitted a tone based on how far away your hand was. Move your hand closer, and the tone gets higher. They let the crowd play this thing, and there was one guy who took to it pretty quickly. It was just something I hadn't seen before.

Were they punk?I say yes. They were clearly part of the punk scene in the UK.
Saint Johnny 01-15-2009, 10:20 PM I say yes. They were clearly part of the punk scene in the UK.
I agree.
Though at the time, and during their ascent to superstar status in the UK and Europe, they were open to criticism and ridicule by many for, not being 'punk enough', (whatever that may mean). And for other equally ridiculous, (in hindsight, anyway) reasons.
But now, if one reads the 'history of punk' or the history of The Jam, they are regarded as forbearer's of all that punk stood for. :dunno:
Hindsight is funny, ya know?
Duffinator 01-15-2009, 10:32 PM On my nineteenth bd. :DHappy birthday, enjoy your teens while they last. On second thought they can last forever. :D

I may sometimes still act like a teen, (ask my g/f?), and I hope that lasts forever...But my 19th bd was in 1979!!

And a ton more. My favorite is definitely Dead To Me.

Does anyone keep up with Strike Anywhere? They have a new song up on myspace, "I'm Your Opposite Number", in my opinion it's their best song yet. Incredible. Check it out (http://www.myspace.com/strikeanywhere).
At the moment I'm listening to Lagwagon's Hoss album.

Talking Heads - Live On Tour
Live Promo LP 1979
Warner Brothers
Mrs. Spideyjack started this off by leaving the CD of Talking Heads 77 in the Honda, so I have been listening to it on my way to work every morning. I dug this out and plan on listening to all the TH music in our house. 2009 will sound a lot like 1979 around here!
I know it's not really punk, but this stuff sure did piss folks off back then.
caddisgeek 10-20-2009, 06:48 PM Talking Heads were part of the CBGB's scene I consider them to be punk. Punk for me is an attitude and an ethic, not a hairstyle

:thmbsp: yes i agree, we midwestern-nere-do-wells loved talking heads as much as the pistols and our beloved buzzcocks n'such.

Wow, Duff what is this?
I do have somewhere, on an old cassette, a vintage Billy Zoom Merry Christmas message that he cut while at my local rock radio station-WDHA, back in the early 80's.

Speaking of Fear does anyone remember their SNL appearance?
From wikipedia:
1981 appearance on Saturday Night Live
The movie brought the band to the attention of actor John Belushi, who lobbied successfully to get the band a spot as a musical guest on the 1981 Halloween episode of his former show Saturday Night Live. The band's appearance included a group of moshers, among them Belushi, Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat (and later Fugazi), Harley Flanagan and John Joseph of The Cro-mags, and John Brannon of Negative Approach. The show's director originally wanted to prevent the dancers from participating, so Belushi offered to be in the episode if the dancers were allowed to stay.[2] The end result was the shortening of Fear's appearance on TV. The band first performed "I Don't Care About You." They started their second performance by saying, "It's great to be in New Jersey," drawing boos from SNL's New York live audience. Accompanied by gory footage of blood-filled pumpkins being carved into Jack O'Lanterns, Fear then played "Beef Bologna," "New York's Alright If You Like Saxophones," and started to play "Let's Have a War" when the audio and video of the telecast faded into commercial. During the performance the slamdancers left ripe pumpkin remains on the set and stage speakers. Belushi also offered Fear the soundtrack for his major motion picture Neighbors. The movie studio eventually forced Fear off the project after Belushi's death. Shortly after the 1981 Halloween SNL appearance, which resulted in $2,500 in damages (falsely magnified a hundredfold in a New York Post article), some clubs chose not to hire the band.
