Kettle slow cooked chilli................

Also I cant think of the brand name, but my local supermarket imports these weird Asian "pringle like" chips, flavours; chilli chicken, peking duck (my fave and yes, they do taste like peking duck) and wasabi lobster (best avoided :yuck:)

I hope we get some Brits in on the discussion, they know how to make potato chips

roast lamb and rosmary anyone?

Doritos all the way. Any flavor that is.

EDIT: Brain fart on my part that Doritos are corn chips and not potato chips. I will have to go with Classic Lays then. But I still like Doritos.

+2 on the Lays Classic.

A number of years ago we visited my wife's family in PA and I remember Goods Potato Chips as being the panacea. Ingredients: Potatos, lard, salt added. We had some visitors this winter from PA and they brought us a bag of the Goods. I ate three or four chips and ate no more. They weren't as good as I remembered. Too "cold-grease" tasting if that's a descriptor.

O'Boise, but they haven't made 'em in years. I like a certain salt-n-vinegar chip, but can't recall the brand at the moment. It's some small regional brand, I think. You can tell I haven't eaten any in a while.

Yeah we're big Utz fans. I like the Grandma Utz Homecooked, but they're kinda fat pucks so we get the regular Utz most often.

I also have to admit a certain fondness for Baked Lays, too bad you have to double up on 'em.

The "new thing" in chips I saw last time I was up in Ohio was cracked pepper / kettle cooked. Several of the local brands had them as well as Utz. These things quite peppery, almost hot, but addicting.

I love Shearer's from Northern Ohio. Utz's is always appreciated when I can find them. Dan-Dee, man that takes me way back. Snyder's (the other guys from PA) in the foil bag. Those are all great!

I got turned on Grippo's out of Cincinnati back in school. The fraternity house would buy food-service boxes for parties. I just ate too much of them in lieu in dinner.

Frito-Lay does nothing for me except for original Fritos. Ever had a fresh Frito right off the line? Dude.

Snyder's of Hanover. That's the ones we used to get. Very good.

The best snack foods seem to come from PA and, to a lesser degree, Ohio. Yum.

I take that back... It was Snyder's of Berlin. Listed under Birdseye, I wonder if it is the same product it used to be?

Dayton, Ohio's local Mike-Sell's had a shake-up recently, adding some new flavors and a lackluster Kettle Cooked line. The downside of this is that they did away with one of my favorite flavors, Old Fashioned Barbecue, and (sacrilege) moved away from using pure peanut oil for frying. The latter would piss me off more if it had actually made much of a difference in the finished product.

To me Mike-Sell's is how chips are supposed to taste. I defy anybody to find a better dip chip than Mike-Sell's Groovy.

Can't go wrong with Original, Groovy, or Old Fashined for basic chips. As far as flavors, I'm a big fan of their Good 'N Hot and Green Onion. The new Salt & Pepper is growing on me. Their Barbecue is excellent, but I prefer Grippo's for that.

Mmmm... potato chips...

I don't know if they're just in my area here in the Midwest or not but new to me are Pringle's Selects. They come in a fancy bag and are called Mini Thin's.

Flav's off the top of my head are Garlic Parmesean, Sweet Potato with Cinammon, Schezwan BBQ, Sun Dried Tomato and one more that I can't remember. When you put one in your mouth they're kinda different but then you can't put them down.

But my favorite has already been called........Lay's. Conn's aren't bad either if I get a good batch. Some of the chip's have a small pocket of grease when you bite into them. I like that.

For dipping though I like Herr's. A stronger chip IMHO..............R1

P.S. I can eat Pringle's by the can with a few beer's...

Some of the chips I like:

Central Illinois: Kitchen Cooked (My fave, from Farmington and Bushnell, IL, check out this link: http://www.kitchencooked.net/information.php?info_id=6 - either you love 'em or hate 'em and funny it seems to be a male/female thing)
Northern Illinois: Mr. G's
Iowa: Szerlings (but salty)
Wisconsin/Minn: Old Dutch Ripples (salty)
South: Golden Flake
Jay's: Kettle Cooked
Costco: Kirkland Signature Kettle rippled (too much after awhile but have that well done, slightly burned taste).

Generally, most of these chips are lighter on the salt than Lays but to me have that "french fry" or "Pik Nik Shoestring potato" kind of taste. That taste is from my youth (New Era Potato Chips in Chicago, no longer made) but some may not like them and may describe them as having that "cold grease" kind of taste from a post above. After the second handful, you're hooked, though.

BTW, I order my fries well done when I can.

Regular old Wise potato chips are the industry standard. I eat nothing else. You can keep Wise BBQ, Salt & Vinegar, coffee or sushi flavored if they make those, and just give me a bag of the regular old Wise "All Natural" salted potato chips.

The ones that are slightly burnt are pure heaven. Why can't they make a whole bag of those?

I think I saw a bag of either Utz or Herr's KETCHUP flavored chips the other day. Small bottle of ketchup and some saltines would probably be cheaper.

Kettle-cooked has been around for quite a while. The cracked pepper flavor is a bit newer, I think.

There are quite a few good potato chip companies in Northern Ohio.

I used to know a guy who sold the plastic film that they make potato chip bags out of. He sold to most or all of the local chipmakers.

He always had large quantities of fresh chips, as well as samples of new products. I was definitely willing to help "test" a new flavor or style. :)

Salem, OK, Wise, and Dan-Dee were the brands I saw as a kid. We also sometimes had Charles Chips delivered.

At this point, I'd probably go for Shearer's or Cape Cod if I were buying chips. They're not really something I eat anymore though.

Just about any brand of Kettle Cooked works for me, but the ones I do up in my Presto Fry-Daddy are the best. When I was a kid summering in Maine, There was a brand with a clown that said "They're Wicked Good" They were, and I haven't seen their equal since. *note* they were Humpty Dumpty brand. I'll have to stcik up for the Brits here. Been there twice, love all the flavors. Pickled Onion, Shrimp Cocktail, Smoky Bacon, Ketchup, Pork Sparerib, Roast Chicken. Damn, but I miss Taco Flavored Doritos! I haven't seen a bag in this Tri-State area in twenty years!

Doritos, after having, it seemed, a fairly stable lineup in my early years, now changes up their lineup maddeningly frequently - good luck getting attached to a Doritos flavor unless it's Nacho Cheese or Cool Ranch.

Anyway... Taco is back. It's (as far as I can remember) the same Taco they marketed twenty years ago. Now if they bring back Salsa Rio, well... I'm in.

All of these are great chips but if I had to prioritize it would have to be in this order.

1. Zapps - most flavors (Best chips I've ever had, good flavor and incredibly crunchy!!!:drool:)

2. Miss Vickies- Jalapeno or Regular (A close second to Zapps.)

3. Kirkland brand from Costco. (Love these russet chips, although some are a little on the burnt side. How can you beat a two pound bag for $4, and they stay crunchy even if you leave the bag open. Wonder how they do that?:scratch2: I think these are made by "Kettle" brand chips.

4. Cape Cod's
