View Full Version : Johnny Horton - any fans out there?
bordeno 05-09-2008, 07:01 AM Picked up a 8 record set of old country at GW a couple of months ago - excellent collection, and includes "North to Alaska" by Johnny Horton. I'd forgotten what a great tune this is.
Interesting how he died, in a car accident with a drunk driver, at the age of 35. He'd had premonitions of being killed at the hands of a drunk for a few years previously.
One hell of a singer.
Wigwam Jones 05-09-2008, 07:47 AM I always liked his songs. Maudlin, but fun.
markallen 05-09-2008, 11:09 AM One of the first albums I bought as a kid, probably 1969 or so, was Johnny Horton's Greatist Hits. Played it on my parent's Motorola console. Great tunes! Wish I still had that album!
ke4jhj 05-09-2008, 11:25 AM I am absolutely a Johnny Horton fan! In addition to "North to Alaska", who can forget "Battle of New Orleans" and "Sink the Bismarck".
If you're not fimiliar with the songs, you need to look them up and give them a listen. You'll become a Johnny Horton fan also.
I bought "The World of Johnny Horton" back in the early 80's. It's a two record Lp from Columbia. It is one of my favorite albums. You don't hear arrangements and backup vocals like he used anymore and that's a real shame. You haven't lived until you hear "Lost Highway".
pilotputz 05-09-2008, 01:00 PM I LOVE Johnny Horton!!
I used to listen to him as a kid with both my parents and their parents, as well. He certainly had the ability to cross generations!
Whispering Pines and Commanchee are my two faves.
A little pointless factoid for you: Commanchee the actual horse is mounted and on display at the natural history museum of the University of Kansas. I used to go see him every so often when I went to school there: He may have been a brave horse, but beautiful he wasn't!!
bordeno 05-09-2008, 01:16 PM I've been playing North to Alaska on guitar, and trying to sing....the latter not that easy...
Gibsonian 05-09-2008, 02:10 PM Horton is great stuff. I have a greatest hits CD and the sound quality is awesome. I'm a fan for life.
jonman 05-09-2008, 02:47 PM He had some great stuff. My favorite were Commanche, When it's Springtime in Alaska, and whispering Pines
Zadok2112 05-09-2008, 04:04 PM I have quite a few of his records. Love older country like that.
Hepcat 05-09-2008, 04:22 PM "Springtime in Alaska" is my little 14 month-old grandson's night-night song. Now when he's at our house and starts rubbing his eyes and getting sleepy he points up at my turntable ("Johnny Horton's Greatest Hits"). After I start the song he crawls up in my lap and goes limp before it ends.
Johnny was one of the first great rockabilly artists too.
no1maestro 05-09-2008, 05:23 PM North to Alaska has always been my favorite but I was asked by a friend to put several of his tunes on tape for his history class. He used them and the students seemed to like that approach to learning. Horton is yet another whose time came too soon!!!
KentTeffeteller 05-10-2008, 11:05 AM Hi,
I love Johnny. Those 6-eye Columbia Stereos are superb sounding and nice music. These were recorded at the old Bradley Studios Quonset Hut by Glenn Snoddy and produced by Don Law. Recorded live to 3-track Ampex 300 recorders and mixed down to Ampex 350 machines. Musicians such as Grady Martin, Harold Bradley, Hank Garland, D.J. Fontana, and more were featured.
Ivorytooth 05-11-2008, 12:14 AM I love Johnny Horton's stuff. Gives me a certain mood I like. I grew up listening to him and reminds me of good times.
Whispering Pines and Commanche, Johnny Reb are some of my favorites.

Earlsays 05-11-2008, 10:45 AM Get your face all pretty and your hair done right
Cause we're gonna do the town tonight
Well I’m comin' into town and right on time I still got your lovin' on my mind
I'm a coming home I gotta make some love
I'm a coming home sweet turtle dove
I'm a coming home to make sweet love to you
Well I see down the road there's a big truck stop
They got a pretty little waitress with the carrot top
She's pretty as a doll pretty as can be
But don't you worry honey she ain't nothin' to me
I'm a coming home I gotta make some love
I'm a coming home sweet turtle dove
I'm a coming home to make sweet love to you
[guitar]
Well I came to a hill and the truck looked down
Throwed in low and she's huggin' the ground
Scratchin' gears but I'm goin' again I'm comin' home baby I'm doggin' it in
I'm a coming home I gotta make some love
I'm a coming home sweet turtle dove
I'm a coming home to make sweet love to you
Get your face all pretty and your hair done right
Cause we're gonna do the town tonight
Well I’m comin' into town right on time I still got your lovin' on my mind
I'm a coming home I gotta make some love
I'm a coming home sweet turtle dove
I'm a coming home to make sweet love to you
