Had to pick up some parts for the ol' Lawn Boy, so took a break from work to head to the small engine shop. Planned my route as to pass by the maximum number of garage sales without any doubling back or sizable side trips. Managed to hit 7...at the first not a thing til I spy a nice Discwasher...no fluid, no case...but you can't go wrong for a quarter, and the bonus was a small tackle box stuffed full of lures and such for a buck. The next four were busts, then I hit the one with "records" in the ad. 2 good-sized boxes of vinyl, and 7 jumped into my hands: (I'd conservatively rate all as "good" condition)
Joni Mitchell......"Court & Spark"
Joni Mitchell......"Miles of Aisles" (have already...but it looks to be better)
Grateful Dead...."American Beauty" (not a DeadHead...but figured I should have it anyway)
Linda Ronstadt..."Heart Like A Wheel" (another dupe....but an upgrade)
Phoebe Snow....S/T on Shelter. (Somebody LIKED this one...went so far as to get a plastic-lined inner sleeve.)
Laura Nyro......."Nested"
And, the one that made it worth the 5 bucks for the stack:
Van Morrison...."Beautiful Vision" Just about mint...complete with original WB plastic inner sleeve. Sweet upgrade.
And, at the last one I hit before returning to work, a pair of Polk Audio surround speakers complete with swivel mounts. 2 bucks and they'll clean up nicely. Heavy little buggers, too.

Was able to sneak away from work for about 45 min...thought I'd do a quick run thru a few more garage sales. Went up to a big old house in the oldest part of town...double garage. Inside...I guessed a couple hundred feet of shelving full of books. I was momentarily distracted by all the reading material, then spotted a big heavy table with box upon box of LPs. If I was a fan of Mantovani/Melachrino/Andy Williams/Bert Kaempfert, etc....I'dve been in heaven. (Didn't know Billy Vaughn had SINGERS!) I'd estimate 12-1500 in all...and the following leapt into my grasp: (all G to VG)

Wendy Waldman....."The Main Refrain" I own nothing by her...so here goes. Album features backup by Linda Ronstadt, Waddy's all over it, along with Andrew Gold. Should be good.
Ry Cooder...."Bop Til You Drop" NICE shape...even w/plastic inner sleeve.
NRBQ..."At Yankee Stadium" Again...own nothing by them...gotta try.
Spandau Ballet...."Parade"
Roxy Music...."Avalon"
Brothers Johnson....."Right On Time" Heyy..."Strawberry Letter 23" is one of my all-time faves, OK?
Mary Hopkin...."Earth Song/Ocean Song" Hmmm...never have seen this...it's on Apple. Have to do a little research.
Syndicate of Sound...."Little Girl" Should be mid-60s powerpop at it's finest/
Bach...."The Six Brandenburg Concertos" On Victrola, pink RCA label...appears unplayed.
I figured with all this vinyl, there HAD to be some jazz. Nope. Just:
Tom Scott...."Street Beat" I remember seeing a promo of this back in '79...prolly more disco than jazz.
And, there's always at least one gem:
Solid State...You've Got To Hear It To Believe It!" A collection on UA from '66 with Joe Williams, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Jimmy McGriff & others. Got a laugh out of the blurb on the back cover: "solid state is recorded exclusively on transistorized equipment using TWENTY-EIGHT channels. Solid state is specificaly designed to serve the growing world of transistor equipment in the home. It is the initial line of albums tailor-made for solid-state apparatus. At the same time, these recordings are guaranteed to enhance any system of reproduction...from the simplest to the most elaborate. Absolute compatibility is assured." Well, I'd HOPE so. BTW...VG+
Oh....and it was $5 for the bunch.

good score
and i liked the blurb. but TWENTY-EIGHT channels in 1966? i thought the beatles only had 16 (and that was state of the art) in 1968.

My bet is that they were referring to the number of inputs to the mixing board...which were most likely mixed down to four, and then two, tracks.
Oh...and by the way...I passed on 3 mint Rick Astley LPs. Was that a blunder?

I'll have to look for that 'Solid State' album. I like tunes that are "guaranteed to enhance any system of reproduction".

I've had a chance to inspect, clean and give a listen to some of my GS vinyl acquisitions...here's a few notes:
Mary Hopkin...unfortunately there is a ripple warp that I didn't see. (DUH! Next time pull the disc ALL THE WAY out.) Oh, well...not that impressed with the listeneable cuts.
Roxy Music...GLAD I grabbed that one! Top shape, GREAT record.
NRBQ...To start with...despite the title...NOT live at Yankee Stadium. That aside, I can see why NRBQ has some really devoted fans. Damn good stuff.
Ry Cooder...Another super-quality disc...a keeper for sure.
I then decided to clean and spin the "Solid State" album. As it turns out, it's a sampler of other "Solid State" albums from UA. Near-mint condition, and, the blurb was right! "guaranteed to enhance any system of reproduction" for sure. Typical mid-60s US stereo production...big, in-your-face sound...VERY well-recorded with a great soundstage. Tops music, too. (for the most part)
The cuts from Thad Jones/Mel Lewis just WAIL...and then there's the tracks from Manny Something-or-other with a wild big band sound. I can imagine some swingin' gentleman back in '66 popping this on the Garrard/Rek-o-Kut or whatever to impress some bouffant blonde he's plying with martinis. I'm sunk now...must start tracking down some of the others in the series. Well...tomorrow another GS weekend begins. Expect a full report.
