I picked up a Nak BX-300 at the thrifts last week. I spent all work day yesterday listening to tapes, including mix tapes made about 7 years ago on a MOTL late 90's Technics deck. The sound was amazing, for cassette. I had made the tapes for uncritical car listening, but they sounded stunning on the Nak, with all sorts of of subtle sounds audible that I had never heard before, even on a Nak 480. Now, I'm not planning on selling all my LP's and CD's to go all cassette/all the time, but I must say I was truly shocked at the sound. I can't imagine what something like a Dragon would sound like.

Glad to hear you enjoying your tapes again. The analog sound is full and rich, even off a cassette. Enjoy your Nak!

The BX-300 is a true sleeper. It is a very nice machine indeed. :thmbsp: The Dragon does sound somewhat better. But I wouldn't got so far as to say way better. The biggest difference is all of the really cool features. However the auto-Azimuth feature can be a godsend with some cassettes though.

If you are considering upgrading, IMHO some of the 3000 series Tandbergs are about as good as Cassettes technology ever got, actually sound noticably superior.

I have a CR 3a which is also a superb sleeper 3 head. Found it in the dump in perfect condition. Measures 40Hz - 21 khz +-1db in dolby c with udxl2 tape

Don't underestimate the lowly BIC T-3 either. Often called the poor mans Nakamichi. It always surprises folks :)
