Help!!!!! What causes the belt on TEAC 4010S tape deck to keep slipping? Seems every time the stop, forward, reverse is used it slips! Could it be the belt is the wrong size? The tape deck has been to the shop so many times, although I know they did their best, it sounds great and everything, but it just keeps having this problem. Maybe it's just too old to repair. The tape deck is my Dad's from 1968. Appreciate any insights or solutions. I'm not a DIY type so I'm really all thumbs to it!

Guess we have to assume (!!!) the shop has replaced the belt, done the proper lubrication, or done nothing at all!!
Check the Pinch Roller and its arm for engaging smoothly and completely. They tend to freeze or stick as they get older.
A good source of parts and info is:

I went through my 4010 a couple of years ago, using info and parts from David and it works like it did when I got it in Japan in 1968. He should be able to help you.

A little oil might have slipped onto the capstan flywheel.

Wow! You got your 4010 in Japan also? My Dad bought his at the Atsugi Japan Navy Exchange in 1968 also! You weren't stationed there were you? Maybe you all know each other?

Never in Japan during Army service, should have said "from" Japan!! A buddy bought it for me and brought it home at end of his service in 'Nam. I was stuck in South Carolina during my service.
Thank your Dad for his service during that period.

If by "slipping" you mean that the belt is being thrown off the motor pulley, let me share a little story.
We recently repaired an A-4010S. Teac had sent us a belt for this model a number of months ago. We pulled it from inventory to fix the machine. Alas, the belt kept getting thrown. Even after cleaning and treatment with rubber rejuvenator, even after cleaning the pulley and flywheel so they were absolutely grease free -- it kept getting thrown.
Finally, we broke down and ordered another belt. It was nominally the same size, but the tackiness or "frictioniness" of the surface was entirely different. When this was installed, the "throwing belt" symptom utterly vanished.
So . . . my advice is: order another belt directly from the Teac parts department. They're located right near Disneyland in Orange County, California.

It's slipping off the capstan flywheel. Not the pulley. You can adjust the capstan motor position by freeing the 3? screws holding the motor in place. Make minor adjustments. Check the deck under the same conditions after each adjustment.

Thanks Fred, It was probably my Dad's recorder that you all fixed. I'll go ahead and order another belt. Do you have a link or a number?

TeacGuy... Yes, THANK YOU very much. I'm looking for manuals for an A-4010S. Hopefully they'll have them.

Yes, I ordered the belts for my Dad's 4010S, and he is a very knowledgeable guy!
