Found this Pioneer CT-F9191 tape deck at a thrift yesterday, paid $4 to save it. What type of idiot would let this happen to an other wise nice tape deck ? Sad, just sad.
On the positive side, RR, FF and play all function, all lights work. Noisy thru head phones, but even they are questionable. A testament to pioneer workmanship.
I have two others that look great, one does nothing, the other only plays, so with and little switch-a-roo, I'll have a functioning restored wreck !
I still hope that kid got his a** beat.

Sorry, but at least you got a good parts donor for cheap :)

Maybe it was dropped?

More like drop-kicked.

Maybe it was dropped?

Or maybe the wife got to it during one of those days.

That an old Jensen sitting on top?

I'll keep you in mind for parts.... although getting an unwanted bad transport (or just a bad ff/rew clutch ) might accelerate my ff/rew clutch fix idea, right now tearing down a deck to get at those parts is what's delaying the tinkering portion of the development....

Once I have one sitting loose, it's easier to grab a few minutes at a time as parts become available.

Sad, sad. At least you'll get some parts from it. Ordered belts for my recently acquired 9191 yesterday. Can't wait to get it into my system.

The speaker on top maybe a Jensen, not sure. It came from a large "Newcomb" cabinet that came with those turntables used in schools and churches, it the case of this one a tube unit. It is twelve inch with a wizzer cone, came with a horn tweeter. Interesting part is the 16/8 ohm selector switch on the cabinet.

Looks like deliberate breakage but who knows. At least you have enough spares to assemble a working unit now. But not to worry, Plastic covers can be fabricated for meters from clear hobby shop thermo plastic. Broken glass tuning scales can be scanned, the cracks retouched out and reprinted on clear acetate to insert behind a piece of clear glass to fix receivers. Lots of fixes for this sorta thing already worked out by antique radio restorers.

How to make you own dial (meter) covers :

What type of idiot

Apparently there are all kinds. The day before yesterday I looked at a pair of Kenwood MV-9Ds in the GW - the huge ones with the large horn up top and the four 12" woofers below. While I was looking at something else, a man came along, removed the grills on the Kennys, and then proceeded to rap his knuckles against the woofers - for what purpose I can't imagine. I didn't have the heart to look and see what damage he had done.

Nice save on the CT-F9191. It can still have a useful life parted out.

Reminds me of that John Prine song: "Please don't bury me down in that cold, cold ground. No, I'd rather have 'em cut me up and pass me all around."

Love John Prine. His first album is the most emotionally moving record I have ever heard, gets you more as you age.
Anyway... The damage had to be intentional, rap your knuckles on a piece of 1/8 inch acrylic that size and see how solid it is. I am willing to bet it took several tries with something to do that. Loose splitters inside gauge, they still work. I will give credit for their aim, no damage around perimeter of gauges. Hope dad's aim was as good on jr's butt !
