i cant make up my mind on what to get this summer! either an acura ,mercedes or a 1980's mustang! i got some cool pics of the mustang! it says on the ad on craigslist that it has 47,000 miles on its engine but it says it might be 147,000 or247,000, but i think its 47,000. its a really nice car and it has a V6 in it

1980's mustangs aren't really mustangs...

Come on, you can do better than that!

ANY car the age of the ones you're looking at is going to be suspect. The 1st & usually 2nd owners prolly took decent care of the car, w/proper maintenance, & hopefully not too much abuse. From there on down, things tend to get iffy, w/the age of the car becoming a factor, along w/the fact that a 3rd or 4th owner might not pay as much attention to proper maint, & simply use the car for kicks. From the photos, it LOOKS pretty decent, but lotsa cars do from 30 feet away...Or in teeny-tiny photos. That iteration of Mustang dates back to 1979, by the time that one came out they SHOULD have had all the bugs out. Also, they are a far less complicated car than an Acura or a Mercedes, easier to work on, & parts should be less expensive. Check under the carpets, in the trunk, & around the doors & wheelwells for rust. If you have to "lift up" the doors to open or close 'em, that's NOT a good sign. Above all, have a competent mechanic you trust "look over" the car. If the seller WON'T let you do that, wave buh-bye & run...

Sandy you are a wise arse - I mean sage :D :D

I would do all that Sandy suggested and I would suggest you buy an old man's car your age not a sports car (one that could kill you). That is my suggestion - reason INSURANCE!!!

at least the ford mustang would be cheaper on insurance then the mercedes. but i really love the mercedes because they are luxury cars but i love the mustangs more because they are also fancy with leather interiors and they have big engines and that makes them fast

You know, you could get a really nice watch with $1500.

For 1500 dollars - all the cars are going to need work - PERIOD!! I would not get the Mercedes or the Mustang - they will be either expensive to fix or too beat up to fix.

what if i test drived the mercedes and it didnt have anything wrong with it?

How do you know - did you have a mechanic look at it? Parts on Mercedes are REALLY expensive - it wouldnt be hard to surpass the price you paid for the car just with one time in the shop.

It's "Test DROVE" the Mercedes...Oh, never mind...Anyway, the same things I said about the 'Stang apply to the Merc...Maybe more so because they are much more complicated machines...But you can do a LOT of the inspection yrself...Pop the hood. Is there lots of crud everywhere, does the motor look like a big, greasy ball ? Not a good sign. Does the car idle smooth, or is the engine doing the rhumba & smoking when idling ? When you put it in gear does it go smoothly or "Clunk" loudly ? When you mash on the front fender, does the car creak & groan or bobble ? Same deal on the ass end-if it does either place, COULD be trouble. Look under the carpets-On a Mercedes, they snap out easily. Shouldn't be any rust under there. If you drive it, it shouldn't shimmy, shake, pull to one side or the other, make strange noises. The interior will likely be MB-Tex vinyl or leather-either one of those should wear like iron. Use yr common sense, & DON'T go "Omigawd, its a MERCEDES !!!" They are cars, too, maybe better built, but they're NOT infallible, either. Again, I would most STRONGLY recommend having a mechanic look it over before I laid down the cash...

Mercedes are going to kill you in repair bills. I'm going to say go with the most reliable thing you can find. Toyota, Honda, Acura, Lexus, and etc. Cars are expensive the way it is.

I was in the same boat a couple years ago I thought a diesel Mercedes would be awesome. Get awesome gas mileage and look awesome, but if anything goes wrong repairs bills would of killed me. I still want one, but I think it would have to be a secondary car. Not going to happen anytime soon.

I ended up getting a Toyota 4runner with 135,000 miles. I have had it for 20,000 miles nothing major has gone wrong with it. I have still pumped money into brakes, timing belt(just to be safe), tranny fluid, and other basic maintenance. This is expensive the way it is. I think If I had a problems regularly I would go crazy. I'm not an old guy either giving you this advice I'm 18. Nothing against old guys. You guys are awesome.

Buy a toyota, cheap to buy, cheap to run and reliable

Buy with your BRAIN and not your HEART. Get a Toyota or Honda, or a Subaru or Nissan. Steer clear of German cars altogether (been there...).

A Honda Civic with 200,000 miles on it is better than a Mercedes. Unless you have mucho dinero to piss away.

Sure, a BMW is a great car to drive, but MAN! They are so costly to maintain. I had one and it was a pain....

I only buy Japanese cars nowdays for their solid reliability and maintenance. When you grow up you can buy whatever you want.

Be careful with those mustangs. I have an 83 and have owned 3 of them, all 5.0's. I don't now how things are in Colorado for cars rusting but these cars will literally disintegrate in corrosive climates. Make sure you have someone that knows what they are looking for crawl under the car to check for excessive rust.

Also I would avoid the V6 models. Either get a 5.0 for performance and suffer mileage or go ahead and get one with a 4 cylinder. The v6 neither performs nor gets any gas millage.

Saying all that these are very reliable cars if you can find one thats been taken care of. There is a large following for them so there is a lot of support. The 5.0's will run forever if not abused.

This basic platform was used from 1979 until 2004. The sheetmetal changed but the basic chassis was the same all during that time. A much better affordable Mustang for a daily driver would be a 1994-1998 series also known as the SN95 platform. They are all around a better car for a driver and they are not so old that it would be hard to find one in good condition. The V6's in these cars are better on gas as well.

its been hot for two months and it only rained about twice in the past two weeks. in thinking about getting the mustang because it wont be as expensive as it would be for a mercedes because repairs on mercedes are expensive, but if i did get the mercedes and kept it running and it only needed a few repairs then what?
