A couple of years ago, we bought a bunch of blond furniture for my office and 4 stools, that are terribly uncomfortable. But I did find they make a pretty nice speaker stand and look very close to the ARs selling on Ebay for $120 a pair. I think we paid $3 each for them at the Christmas Tree shop.
I bought some Walnut oil stain and proceeded to sand quite well the old finish, that doesn't look like much but more than it looks. After a good sanding, it didn't take at all. I didn't have any real stripper but had some Liquid Sandpaper which is a light stripper I think. Was not cheap with it and rubbed it as the directions said and you could see particles of what were finish lumping up. I didn't want to waste stain so I sanded it yet again. It barely takes the stain and I am betting that if I wiped it it would come right off. Tomorrow, if it doesn't rain, I will get it outdoors to dry, but there isn't nearly enough stain to make it look right, the directions say you can apply second coat after 15 minutes, it was still somewhat wet after 3 hours but I put a second coat on and it didn't seem to take any better than the first coat.
I guess I need the baddest stripper known to man to get down to the wood. Any recommendations.
This is what they look like before. For those of you familar with the AR stands, they look quite similar, I have 4 of these and 4 speakers, now if I can just get them to stain. I had a pair of the stands in the 70s and I know they were not expensive then.
