I (and another Ak member as a matter of fact) am interested in knowing how good these cassettes are, if they're just average quality or something better. It says "Communicator Series" on the label.

They are normal bias cassettes, for general purpose voice & music. I think they're used a lot for recording speeches, lectures, etc... I bought some once back in the mid-90's & they were OK. Not as good as, say, Maxell XLII-S, but on a decent tape deck, and some adjustment to the bias & using Dolby, music should sound fine. I've seen a few websites selling them for pretty decent price, usually less than $10/box, depending on the length. Maxell also makes them in 60, 90, & 120 minute lengths as well. Here's a write-up that may be helpful:

Apparently, the cassette shells are among the industry's best & they're designed to be used a lot. Gee, after reading that link, I might have to buy a box of them! 90 minute, though.

They were commonly used by Government agencies. I did a lot of enhancement of DEA wiretaps and undercover recordings and almost all were on those 'Communicator' cassettes.

The tape is pretty good for voice, but man a lot of those undercover recordings sucked!

I picked up a shitload of them in a thrift a couple months ago with the idea of using them to mix down individual songs from my 4-track. They seem to be OK, no objections.

The "drop-out" series is said to be worth million's on the black market:scratch2:

Hi,

These cassettes are the professional version of LN/UR tape. Very decent and inexpensive. Not as good as XL-II but not bad.
