Hi I just recently purchased an akai gx-747 and the right tension arm keeps ratcheting up and down and the play light remains green(pressing stop will not keep this from happening). This begins when the unit is powered on. I just received the service manual, any thoughts as to what the problem could be. I tested the four contact switches and they appear to work (on until pressed and they break contact)-on the tension arms. It does this with tape in the machine or without tape.
thanks

The tension arms are motorized and use small belts to move them back and forth. When the belts stretch, they cause the constant cycling of the arms. The small belts need to be replaced. You will have to carefully dissassemble the tension arm assembly on each side to change the belt. It is a bit complicated but can be done if you take your time. I replaced a set in my GX-747. I got replacement belts from TurntableNeedles.com, we took measurements and found the correct belt. Just ask for a pair of 1.9 Inch Square Belts, Small Part # SBS1.9 I think they were 4.99 ea. Phone is (866) 235-8728. E-Mail is Service@TurntableNeedles.com

Just what Ozric said. One of these days I'll find the spare time and do mine over as well. In the mean time you can simply assist the arm to it's resting place.
