I have a Fisher MT-6225 turntable with an unknown Audio Technica cartridge. This is the stylus that it has on it (95%sure) looks the same but has a opaque black needle guard instead.(http://www.turntableneedles.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=9156 ), and I would like to know a) how good my turntable is and how it compares to other decks of it's vintage, and b) what my cartridge is (if anyone knows), and how good it is. What should I do to go about replacing the cartridge, or do I have a good one already, just in need of a stylus. I do not know very much about turntables so any help is appreciated.

Thanks
-Eric

For those not familiar, this is direct drive, auto return.

Well, Eric, I don't have personal experience with it, but having seen a picture and comparing to others of that period I'd say that's a pretty decent turntable. The arm looks reminiscent of the Acos Lustre style used on Pioneer and many others.

The needle is an aftermarket replacement, hence the black guard (does it look like this? http://www.turntableneedles.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=9432), so I can't speak for its quality, but the cartridge is an AT13E, which was very good. You might also check with lpgear and garage-a-records for replacement styli. If you decide to look for a new cartridge, just to a search here using keyword "cartridge" and you'll find a zillion threads with recommendations.

My favorite stylus for the AT13 is the eav as in AT13eav. All around very nice performer. JICO and Audio Technica offer this stylus. It's available from various sources like those mentioned above :)

i would say it looks more like this ( http://www.turntableneedles.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=9156 ) because of that hole looking thing on the back(top), how it's coated in white. but maybe that doesnt matter?...and i dont see any results for AT13eav
