View Full Version : Klipschorns?
GarethJones 05-24-2008, 09:05 AM Found a used pair in a local electronics shop, near mint.
whats a reasonable price to pay for these?
the guy doesnt have a fixed tag on em, is willing to negotiate, im willing to pay.
but id like a reasonable ballpark before i open talks. thanks!
winters860 05-24-2008, 09:18 AM They retail new for $7500 a pair. Used, full market value, I'd expect to pay $2000-3000 for a decent pair.
As cornerhorns, Klipschorns are even more room dependant than the average speaker. Make sure you're ready for that kind of commitment or scale back your ambitions to a pair of Klipsch LaScala.
GarethJones 05-24-2008, 09:20 AM cool. i found the retail price pretty quickly but i hadnt found any average resale values. price will probably be inflated somewhat, but i should be able to talk em down a bit. perfect... BWAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA
(creepy evil laugh)
jetblack 05-24-2008, 09:26 AM I've seen some used (1975) k-horns for sale at $2500, but it comes down to what you and the seller think the value of these speakers is.
GarethJones 05-24-2008, 09:30 AM i gotta say, nothing short of sex has brought me as much satisfaction as putting together my first stereo, in a long time. shit its exciting
jetblack 05-24-2008, 09:45 AM You sound like a music lover! I hope you like horns. It appears that you are spending your money on your transducers (speakers, among other things), which was my philosophy when I was beginning to put a system together (many moons ago).
Fisherdude 05-24-2008, 11:41 AM Be careful buying those Khorns. Over the years many of them have had drivers replaced or crossovers changed. If all the bits aren't original the value is dramatically impacted. Unless the person who did the work really knew what he was doing, and the changes are truly "upgrades".
Average value for original condition, all working, but not at all mint, can range in the 1,800-2,500 area, depending on all the usual things, including the type of veneer. Less common veneer, beautiful condition, can flirt with $3,000.
Again, as always, depends on the day, the sunspot cycle, etc., etc..
Good luck!
toddrr 05-24-2008, 05:15 PM The Khorns can sometimes be found for $1500 or less on craigslist, so I would offer $1300 and see what happens.
All components and drivers can readily be found on ebay. Upgrades to crossovers are hand built by at least three folks on the net which run around $200 to $300. Although I had a 70's La Scala with the original crossover which looked old and rusty but sounded great, so it not a real necessity in most cases.
Probably the biggest issue you will have is the diaphrams in the tweeters will need replacement ($50 - $75). You can do this or have Bob Crites help you.

Take a closer look, write down the driver #'s and see what you have.
BY the way the LA Scala's where my favorite speakers I have owned, and I have owned alot. I sold them recently because of an impending move.
GO get them, they are only going to go UP in value!!!
analog addict 05-26-2008, 12:48 PM ...I got my walnut finished '76 vintage 8.5/10 K-horns locally via CL for $1750. And that was before the seller took a pair of Forte II's in trade against the cash price.:thmbsp:
Work with the seller, and don't give up!...
jocko_nc 05-26-2008, 02:45 PM I'd love to have a pair of those, except I would have to dedicate an entire room to the cause.
GarethJones 05-29-2008, 01:40 PM 1973 all original components, walnut finish, $3500
I think ill pass this one up.
analog addict 05-29-2008, 01:59 PM wait awhile, then try again.....:thmbsp:
avguytx 05-29-2008, 02:08 PM I concur.....they can be had for unheard of prices sometimes. :D ;)
