Hello AKers,

A local fellow offered me to sell me a pair of Sonic Art SA40 speakers today. I can't find anything about these with a search. Think they were purchased new by him around 1970.

He also has a pair of Marantz HD 77s for sale. Any feedback on these would be greatly appreciated too. They need a woofer refoam, but otherwise look pretty good.

Thanks,

How about picking them up for cheap and then telling us about them?

Will give it a shot. The owner seems he may be a little too proud of them.

I have no idea but wonder if the Sonic speakers might be a store brand.

I found a pair of Sonics AS-331's. I did a search and found that there are Sonic and Sonics. I dont know if they are the same company or not. From what I have learned is that they are a Japanese speaker made in the late 60's early 70's to compete with Pioneer and Sansui. They where bought by Soldiers on there way home from the war in Nam. They where an affordable alternative to Pioneer and the Sui's.
Mine sound OK but not anything special. If they are in good shape and not to much I say go for it. Mine are going to be on garage/shop duty with my beater Pioneer SX-737 receiver.
Try doing a search of the firums here at AK. That is where I got my info. Hope this helps.
Bobby

This same fellow has a Pioneer SX-737 receiver he bought new and claims is in excellent shape. It is worth $50?

Sonic is an entry level brand from Kenwood(?)
SonicS is different.
I would skip the Sonic speakers for sure.
The Marantz I personally would only get if I had the space and time to get them in operating condition.
It's really up to you, if you want more speakers, go ahead, if you want the best speakers you can get for the money, wait for another deal.
It's not like you are in a rush to get speakers right? You can and will benefit from waiting for a better deal.

I agree with the go-for-it sentiment. I have a SX-737 that I bought for $65 from a tech who was selling it because the owner never came to pick it up. Well worth the $65.
