View Full Version : The Pentangle
arrow 68 06-13-2008, 05:29 PM Found their first two albums at the thrift a little while ago. I really like what I have heard. Almost through the first album. I have not got to the double live album "Sweet Child" yet. An added bonus, their first record is a White Label Promo.
Cantabury Guy 06-13-2008, 06:36 PM Enjoy! They were some of my first purchases back in the day. If you like the trad Brit stuff you should get their release Cruel Sister. Side two , a full side of Jack Orion. The word masterpiece can be too easily used but this has to be close. Keep us informed.
pmsummer 06-13-2008, 07:21 PM Few bands ever had so many stellar members as Pentangle. Not a weak link among them.

British Folk Jazz: they own the genre.
arrow 68 06-13-2008, 10:04 PM I read their roots were catholic on Wikipedia? Interesting. There is a faded stamp on the lower front of the sleeve that says "South Hills Catholic High School, 1000 Mcnally (?) Road". It fades out after that, P something, and then a partial zip, 5226? I guess they gave some out at this school, hence the promo. There was Buffy St Marie, Joan Baez, Judy Collins among others in the stack. Common stuff. Some interesting finds the last couple of days.
Strangeband 06-13-2008, 11:29 PM I've been a Pentangle fan since 1971. Lots of great stuff. I saw one incarnation of them perform in 1991, and they were stellar.

Nakdoc 06-14-2008, 11:04 AM A big favorite of mine. The live cuts on "Basket of Light" are world class. The hall acoustics are to-die-for. I love Jacqui's sweet voice singing about shootings, beheaddings, and highway robbery. Bert and John are the greatest rock guitarists never to plug in. Listen to their riffs as they trade and interweave and imagine it loud and fuzzy. IMO Jack Orion is their most tedious cut. I can't get enough of the glockenspiel in those little dances they perform.

ello! mates
Ahhh, the roving minstrels, man would I like to go see those guys (and possible gal) live. I recommend getting any or all of the first four records, 1968 Sweet Child -Reprise AMG, 1968 The Pentangle -Reprise AMG, 1969 Basket of Light -Edsel/AMG, 1970 Cruel Sister -Reprise to establish a good idea of their scope and talent.
Here's a news clip that I can't entirely agree with but...“Forget Cream…or Led Zeppelin, this is the biggie: Pentangle is reforming” – The Guardian. Ha ha, ha! Anyway, they are legends for sure, each and all.
I was looking to see if Bert Jansch would be touring the colonies to support his relatively new record "the Black Swan" that came out in Nov. '06. A very nice piece of wax indeed with Beth Orton helping out on a couple of track. Come to think of Beth...hmmm, I think I'll spin Her first record "Trailer Park" tonite!
Happy Listening! :beatnik:

Such a romantic bit they were, ah?!

solarmusick 06-15-2008, 10:59 PM I have Sweet Child, Cruel Sister, and Solomon's Seal on LP, great records. If you want something similar check out Fairport Convention, Liege & Lief is awesome. There are some great psych folk bands from that time too, including Trees, Jan Dukes de Grey, Holderlin's debut, Comus' First Utterance, and Spirogyra (probably my favorite). Those bands are harder to find on LP but CDs shouldn't be a problem if you look online.
