View Full Version : Golden Earring - Moontan Looking for jacket info.
similost 06-13-2008, 09:53 PM While I'm asking questions about LP's...
I've got a second copy of Moontan that looks nothing like my other copy...
This cover looks like the other, but on all 4 edges, there is a small red stripe in the biddle, with a gold imprented Moontan under it. THen in the upper right corner, in a half circle is written Platinum Plus with the number 37172. All imprinted in gold. Is that the pressing number after the platinum sale? Is this soemthing not common? I can't find anything about it on the net.
similost 06-13-2008, 10:03 PM Never mind. I think I have it figured out. I've got the second and thrid releases. The first releas had a different cover, and was on the track record lable. I've got a second release, on the track record lable, and a third release, on MCA and after the platinum award.. or at least it's the best I can figure from what little I've found, and from the note about this being a re-release with a differet cover on the Track lable on the back cover.
First issue had a naked lady dancing with a spaceman as I recall. Then the artwork was changed because some prudes were offended, much in the same way the Blind Faith albums artwork was changed (and later put back to right).
similost 06-13-2008, 10:28 PM THanks Celt. I had seen the first cover, but it never hit me that people would find it offencive.. looked pretty cool to me..
Interesting info.
ke4jhj 06-13-2008, 10:37 PM My copy has the four red stripes on the middle of each edge with Moontan printed in white at the top and bottom and Moontan in black on the left and right.
There is no reference to the Platinum award and it is on the Track label. I remember buying it in late 1974. I assume it is the second release.
I wish I had seen (or remember seeing) the original cover art.
Well, I couldn't find the original US album art, but did find the original UK artwork....or at least from the German release.
ScramMan2 06-14-2008, 11:56 AM I've got MCA 396. It has a note printed on the back "This album was previously released by MCA Records, Inc. on the Track record label with a different jacket, but bearing the same title."
levensnevel 06-14-2008, 12:20 PM Well being a dutchie and Golden Earing being a dutch band I got the red label Polydor issue (#2925 017 and dutch pressing) with that nice lady on the front and that ugly man on the inside.
levensnevel 06-14-2008, 03:47 PM mmm
apart from the different covers it seems that not all issues contain the same songs
I've got a dutch pressing which include the following songs
side a
Candy's going bad
Are you receiving me
Suzy lunacy
side b
Radar love
Just like Vince Taylor
the Vanilla Queen
whereas the US issue seems to include
Radar love,
Candy's going bad,
the Vanilla Queen,
Big tree, blue sea and
Are you receiving me
KentTeffeteller 06-14-2008, 07:16 PM Hi,
MCA Platinum Plus was a budget re-issue of earlier records. They sold for $5.99 list in 1978-1979. The covers were usually lacking gatefolds compared to earlier issues. Pressings were a crapshoot.
CarlV 06-14-2008, 07:45 PM Here is mine. Cover is not in great shape but my records this old have been through a great deal. I bought this the day after seeing them 2nd bill Trower back in the mid seventies. Sure isn't anything like what I saw the night before but then so many groups were nothing like their studio releases back then. At least the ones that really put on a show like they did. :)

avionic 06-14-2008, 08:28 PM Vanilla queen is my favorite song on the album.
CarlV 06-14-2008, 08:30 PM My album is dated 1974 btw. Bridge Of Sighs was the album Trower was touring for. Focus was 3rd bill. Cool show.

Wireworm5 06-14-2008, 09:54 PM Vanilla queen is my favorite song on the album.
I like Big Tree, Blue Sea and Are You Receiving Me, a close second.
truetone36 06-14-2008, 10:40 PM My favorites are Vanilla Queen and Candy's Going Bad. I got burned out on Radar Love 'cause it's been played in heavy rotation on the radio for years.
dgwojo 06-15-2008, 12:11 AM Vanilla queen is my favorite song on the album.
Mine too, I played the crap out of that song on 8 track in the late 70's in my 1969 SS427 Chevelle (SS396 with a 427 police car motor). I still listen to Vanilla Queen about once a month, it's the only song on the CD I listen to anymore?? :sigh:
levensnevel 06-17-2008, 03:02 PM  check out Vanilla Queen on their 1977 Live album
just played them back to back.
This live version (12:40 minutes) is even better if you ask me, but than again I'm a bit biased
Just stumbled across their 'naked truth' CD (1992 issue) It contains an acoustic version of VQ (4:46 minutes)
19 years further on the road this acoustic version has lost its raw edges. Nothing beats amplified live music if you ask me

While I agree that nothing beats amplified live music, "The Naked Truth" is one of the best of the spate of "unplugged" albums that everyone and their mother was putting out in that time frame. Songs like "Mad Love' Comin'" and "Jangalene" really rock, and some of their more ballady work like "Why do I" really work well unplugged.
