In Norway McDonalds Fries still kick ass! No-one can touch the fries from McDonalds.. (although thats the only thing they serve that do not taste like it`s been prepared in a cheap microwave oven... I HATE their burgers (all except the "McFeast".. if it exists in other markets than the Norwegian)) It tastes almost like a burger .. (even though it`s far from a Burgerking burger) ;)
A trend that worries me that I have noticed over here the past year, is that it seems they have stopped putting salt on the fries, and stopped giving me "free salt bags" if I forget to ASK!) I know salt is not good for me, but neither is food that tastes like ... air...... Perhaps the local "dealers" are CHEAP, but this has actually become a problem .. I need to have backup salt in my car to survive
(I eat MCD once a month in average... more of a "kebab" man myself, or when I can, a Burger King man) ;) (the lacking saltbags and "barbeque SAUCE instead of actually BARBEQUING the meat", has become a real issue for me) :)
Ok, but to keep within the topic... McD fries rules (in this part of the world) as long as you remember to ASK for salt
Wendy's is about the only chain with acceptable fries. Luckily a local BBQ joint makes 'em like when I was a kid. Great big crinkle cuts!

Ooooo, what'd I do for a Wendy's right now. None here in this town. But we have two McD's and they are still pretty good. Eat there about once every two weeks on tee-ball night for the kid. Still enjoy their fries. :thmbsp:

"Lard" is cleaned and filtered pork fat, not beef fat. The equivalent from beef is called "tallow".

You're welcome I wasn't trying to be a smarta**; it's one of the things they teach you in chef school. In much traditional ethnic cooking, tallow and lard have very specific uses. For instance, to fry up corn tortillas crispy for tostadas, the traditional frying medium is lard (as is most Mexican frying duties).
Personally, I don't use lard or tallow; I prefer olive oil or corn oil.

The fries at Wendy's seem to have potential. But, I can honestly say I've never had any decent ones there. Every time I've had them, they've been lukewarm and soggy.
The only fast food burger joint we have in town is Burger King. I have never been a fan of breaded/coated fries and this holds true with BK fries too.

It's not very good for you, but most of us already know that.
My whole beef, and it's like this with cigs too, if it's so damn bad that it can be banned, then it's bad enough to be made outright illegal to produce.
Now, that's not saying I think either should happen because of the slippery slope effect. But, it's the irony of it that kills me.

I eat their stuff occasionally. I'll stop in for a pee break, order a coffee (good coffee!) and maybe an apple pie tubular thing. Used to like their fries more, but I think they're okay now.
What gets me is they want to change how the food is cooked. As if one is going to eat there 3 times a day, every day! I'm thinking most people eat there about one time a month.
Next thing you know the Gov't will mandate seatbelts on toilets.

I used to work at a McDonald's, and can attest to the fact that some people (admittedly a small minority) eat there multiple times daily.
Of course, these individuals could usually be identified by their waistlines.

As most of us know but do not really want to admit, eating french fries just isn't good for us! :sigh:
As a result of this sad but true fact, I try to limit my consumption of them and therefore try to use use my small "ration" most wisely, not at generic fast-food places.
One exception is Bojangles. I believe this is regional and not to be found everywhere. Their seasoned fries are pretty good, but I only allow myself to indulge about once per month.
Of course, most of us know a local place that does great fries. I had to run over to the big city yesterday to pick some spread spectrum radios and thought to myself, "a great chance to eat at the B-B-Q King"!
The B-B-Q King is an old fashioned drive-in that despite its name, is far better known for its Po-Boy Sandwich, a double-patty cheeseburger with excellent fries. Pair that up with a real fountain coke over crushed ice and that food service ketchup served in the little white paper cups and you have a winner!
So I pick up the gear at the distributor and make the 2 or 3 block drive to the B-B-Q King and lo and behold, they are closed on Mondays. I knew they were closed on Sundays, but forgot about Mondays.
Oh well, I will save my "french fry" allocation for another time!

Ever have sweet potato fries? A whole different thing, but very tasty.
I've been meaning to try McDonalds now that they've gone trans fat free. I had Wendy's last night and they were as good as ever. The only catch with Wendy's is that sometimes they are too slow to throw out the fries when it's slow. Nothing is worse than old Wendy's fries. Once I found a fly in my Wendy's fries. I should have told them I ordered fries, not flies!
I'm not normally in favor of banning things for our protection, but I'm glad to see trans fat going away. Trans fat starts as normal vegetable oil, then they chemically react it to turn it into something similar to lard. The only reason they do this is because it's CHEAP, lasts FOREVER, and they can boast that they use 100% vegetable oil. Sure, it's cholesterol free, but it's worse for you that lard. It used to be impossible to avoid because it was in absolutely everything.

Yes. Just had them last week. They aren't commonly found, so I eat them when I can find them. Speaking of fast food fries, the reason they taste similar from restaurant to restaurant is because the oil they use is flavored. That way the taste is uniform where ever you go. Got that nugget from a Food Network show.

McD's fries went to crap some time ago...not sure when, but they were really only good when fresh and only ever had a shelf life of about 20 minutes, the burgers have suffered a similar fate, and i will never risk getting another like the last one i had..i do kinda like the new crispy chicken tho...
i still miss Fuddrucker's,but i imagine it is difficult to maintain the overhead in a fudd's without it being flat out busy ALL THE TIME...fresh everything, with a bakery and butcher on site,a LARGE salad bar affair for DIY toppings,Fudd's is junk food taken to a whole 'nother level, there's just no comparison to McD's,BK etc...them big fries with the liquid cheese sauce....man oh man :)

I'm with THESE guys:
It's been about 25 years since I have eaten a McDonald's burger and I hope to make it another 25+
Not sure how long here, but definitely more than 15 years. Have no plans to eat any McDonald's crud again within my lifetime... which will be YEARS longer and healthier than it would have been , if I hadn't stopped.
I used to work at a McDonald's, and can attest to the fact that some people (admittedly a small minority) eat there multiple times daily.
Of course, these individuals could usually be identified by their waistlines.
I used to be one of those people. I ate a lot of McDonald's stuff for years, before I realized what it was doing to me... and by then I had to struggle to break the addiction, but I managed to. I now weigh more than 40 pounds less than I did then, with a waistline at least ten inches smaller, and most of my organs that were beginning to fail now function halfway decently. I am positive that I would not even be alive today, if I hadn't stopped eating that poisonous excuse for food. It (not just McDonalds, but that was a big part of it) basically ruined my life.
Ever see "SuperSize Me"? What happened to that guy is EXACTLY what will happen to ANYONE who eats a lot of McDonald's stuff [I can't even think of it as "food" any more.] I know it's true, from firsthand experience, except my symptoms were worse (3 consecutive days of McD, even with other foods, not only gives me headaches, but nosebleeds!).
Amen brother. Roach poison would likely be better for you, and tastier too!:D
Russellc
Ain't that the truth!
I rank McDonalds (and the others like them, but McD is by far the worst) right up there with cigarette companies and the drug cartels, with how they knowingly make their money at the expense of people's health and lives, and try to "dance" their way out of responsibility with distortions and lies.
You're right about the trans-fats. But just a suggestion: they still aren't good for you, even without the trans fats. Don't bother trying 'em. Your cells, along with the family that will enjoy having you around longer, will thank you.

Anymore, I can't stand fast food. Although I do like Wendy's baconator, I won't make a special trip for one. All fast food fries suck. I don't like something that turns to mushy slop as soon as it's taken from the cooker. Wendy's fries are the worst of a bad bunch.
I'll take the Hot Dog Shoppe (Warren, OH) anyday. This is one place that hasn't gone to hell. Whenever I go north, I make it a point to stop there. As for the major fast food chains (despite being some areas major employers), I say THHHHHHHHH!

I don't eat much fast food these days, but it's good to know that it's back to only being bad for you rather than toxic. It's also nice that trans-fat isn't in all prepared foods any more. Even decent restaurants used to put it in everything from the bread to the "butter" to the frying oil.

After about a week the burgers were a slimey, gooey mess. The fries still looked nice and fresh. After about a month the fries still looked like they just came out of the fryer! Hmmmm? When I lived in NY I always went out of my way to get Nathan's fries. Big crinkly-cut slabs of potato cooked to a toasty brown color in a vat of lard. Their dogs were the greatest 'back in the day', too.
Nobody would understand unless they'd been there!
I try to imitate the Nathan's method at home and come pretty close. But I live in Florida now, and when I proudly whip out my batch of pseudo-Nathan fries my friends just kind of stare at them. Then they slowly turn their heads towards me.....

Wasn't beef drippings. They used beef tallow (fat) to cook their food in. Tasted wonderful and actually was much healthier than the crap "vegetable" oil that they replaced it with. Then they had to add chemicals to the fries to try to get that taste back.

If you're blowing up 75 and get off one of those exits , and the Sonny's is close to the interstate, it won't be the original on Waldo Road- that's in the Northeast part of town about 8 miles way from 75. Also, my previous statement was past tense- the food WAS good. After all the franchising started in the late 70's, the quality declined- not to say it's bad now, or anything like that. Their AYCE eat pork is a pretty good meal, and definitely
better than any burger joint along the interstate.
