As a person that grew up in the 60's and 70's, music was a big part of my life as it was for most Ak'ers. The popular music of the time had some really good stuff and as a result, my collection is full of good 60's and 70's music.

I often take a CD or two from my collection as I make numerous day-trips. Recently I have been revisiting some of the popular music of the 70's, the Doobie Brothers in particular. Although not their first album, Toulouse Street was certainly the album that many of us first bought.

One of the reasons that I picked this one was that the state of Missouri is using a cover version of Listen to the music in their tourism campaign promo on national TV, and the tune was on my mind. There's a lot of good music on that album, and to me, it holds up well after more than 35 years.

This is also the type of album that sounds particularly good on my JBLs with my Crown amps, although it sounds very good in my vehicle as well! This album is on Warner and as a part of the WEA group, there is a high probability that it was recorded and mixed in a studio that used JBL monitors.

For those of you who have this album, I suggest a fresh listen and solicit your comments. Please try to refrain from the usual "they went to heck after so and so left or after so and so joined the band" or "they sold out" or whatever. I'd really just like to hear your comments about the music after a fresh listen.

I bought the 45 of 'Listen to the Music' back when it was a hit :-)

I'll throw it on as soon as ZZ Top's "Tejas" is done tracking. :D

Spinning now. My initial thought is "next time I see this in the used record store, I need a new copy". I had also forgotten that Ted Templemann produced these guys.

I also must say that it's taken me many, many years to warm up to the Doobies again, after a very traumatic and deep-scarring incident back in college. A guy on our floor in the dorm with no musical aptitude whatsoever and very rich parents got an awesome stereo for Xmas, and exactly two albums, "Best of the Doobies" and "J Geils Band - Freeze Frame". We all were tortured with those two albums at top volume for the next 5 months. Daily. Repeatedly. I still hate the J Geils Band. I've forgiven the Doobies.

That all being said, I'm enjoying this spin immensely. Great stuff, and oft forgotten is how good their non-hits are.

Excellent LP, maybe my favorite from the Doobies.

There's a wealth of cool stuff between the two hit singles. "Mamaloi", "Don't Start Me to Talkin" and "White Sun" come to mind. Have to make it a point to pull that one out and play sometime soon.

when you're done listening to it, throw on "stampede"

i went AWOL from the navy, and jumped a freight train from charleston, sc to savanah, ga to see their farewell tour!
cost me reduction in rank from e-4 to e-3, 60 days restriction, and half a month's pay for two months.
well worth it!

then the f**ckers got back together.

A great album from a great group!! :music:

The next release 'The Captain and Me' is a great album too!!

I find it stunning that The Doobie Brothers aren't in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame yet!!

I just had Best of the Doobies on last night (the 1976 version). Love that Tiran Porter bass riff in "It keeps you running". Great sound quality on all their albums with Ted Templeman producing.

If you have good speakers this is a foundation rocker.

"Black Water" is another great cut.

"I Cheat the Hangman" is incredible at high volume. The instrumental "Road Angel" on the Stampede album is another killer kut.

It took a college dorm full of guys FIVE MONTHS to slap some sense into the guy? :nono:

Reminds me of my time in the Marine Corps just before I got out. They had some "biker" types that would listen to the Ventures at full blast all the time. I still won't listen to that, and I like the sound of a Fender Strat.

Hi,

Toulouse Street and The Captain & Me are my favorite Doobies LP's. Excellent music and some of the best recorded acoustic guitars on vinyl. The German pressings and Japanese pressings are especially fine. Original USA pressings are also a treat. Not too much money in nice shape and a smile on your face. Especially love "Black Water" as the vocals go from channel to channel as they answer each other. Likely mixed on JBL 4311s or UREI control monitors. :tresbon:

What he said.

I've got a couple "Toulouse Streets", a green label and a palm tree label, and a Nautilus HSM "Captain and Me", which happens to be playing right now.

FWIW, I have little use for the Michael McDonald years...:puke:

Yeah, then they go and put somebody like "Madonna" in. :screwy: I don't think I can go there now and pay the price of admission to see some crappy pop star who doesn't belong... :smoke:

It was certainly my first Doobies album, and remains my favorite. In fact, side 1 may be my favorite side of any album I own.
