View Full Version : Describe your life in one lyric

if you could describe your life with one short song lyric, what would it be?

for me, i could use "like a river that don't know where it's flowin', i took a wrong turn and i just kept going."

let's make this fun, and not name the artist or song. i know mine's an easy one. who can guess?

I decided to go really pretentious and semi obscure. And I was listening to this song while I pulled up this thread.

Mine (#6) is translated "I have lost track of the world, with which I used to waste much time", from Mahler's "I have lost track of the world" on "Songs of a Wayfarer." A very beautiful recording, very sad. Listening to it to try out some different combinations of gear. Sums up things lately, or I could have put the whole of Dark Side of the Moon which was on before it.

cheers...fun topic!

Two of my favorites come to mind. They convey my state of mind pretty accurately. One is pretty easy; the other might require a little digging.

I never have seen them before,
These people of flesh ;
These are no spirits caught and sore
In the physical mesh.

They are substance itself, that flows in thick
Flame of flesh forever traveling
Like the flame of a candle, slow and quick
Fluttering and softly unraveling.

It moves, it ripples, and all the time
It changes, and with it change
Moods, thoughts, desires, and deeds that chime
With the rippling fleshly change.

I never saw them, how they must soften
Themselves with oil and lard
Their guts with a certain fat, and often
Laugh, and laugh hard.

This defined my life up until almost 20 years ago but in a different way still defines me today but in a positive way:

You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars
Ive been living on the edge so long
Where the winds of limbo roar
And Im young enough to look at
And far too old to see
All the scars are on the inside

Im not sure if theres anything left of me

Dont let these shakes go on
Its time we had a break from it
Its time we had some leave
Weve been living in the flames
Weve been eating up our brains
Oh, please dont let theses shakes go on

You ask me why Im weary, why I cant speak to you
You blame me for my silence
Say its time I changed and grew
But the wars still going on dear
And theres no end that I know
And I cant say if were ever...
I cant say if were ever gonna to be free

Dont let these shakes go on
Its time we had a break from it
Its time we had some leave
Weve been living in the flames
Weve been eating out our brains
Oh, please dont let theses shakes go on

You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars
My energys spent at last
And my armor is destroyed
I have used up all my weapons and Im helpless and bereaved
Wounds are all Im made of
Did I hear you say that this is victory?

Dont let these shakes go on
Its time we had a break from it
Send me to the rear
Where the tides of madness swell
And been sliding into hell
Oh, please dont let shakes go on
Dont let these shakes go on
Dont let these shakes go on

Buffett has a line I like a lot.

It goes "guess i am a pirate, two hundred years too late. the cannons don't thunder, there's nothing to plunder, i'm an over fourty victim of fate."

A Pirate Looks at 40 is the name of the tune.

Along those lines I'd go for either this one:
"I've got a schoolboy heart. A novelist eye. Stout sailor's legs and a license to fly. I came with nomad feet. And some wanderin' toes that walk up my longboard and hang off the nose."

Or

"I'm still climbing up the mountainside.
Don't count me out.
As long as I've got my heart and soul I've got everything.
I've got everything I need."

or maybe even
"Like the fool I am and I'll always be...I've got a dream. I've got a dream."

And Im young enough to look at
And far too old to see
All the scars are on the inside

Im not sure if theres anything left of me

Dont let these shakes go on
Its time we had a break from it
Its time we had some leave
Weve been living in the flames
Weve been eating up our brains
Oh, please dont let theses shakes go on

You ask me why Im weary, why I cant speak to you
You blame me for my silence
Say its time I changed and grew
But the wars still going on dear
And theres no end that I know
And I cant say if were ever...
I cant say if were ever gonna to be free

Dont let these shakes go on
Its time we had a break from it
Its time we had some leave
Weve been living in the flames
Weve been eating out our brains
Oh, please dont let theses shakes go on

You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars
My energys spent at last
And my armor is destroyed
I have used up all my weapons and Im helpless and bereaved
Wounds are all Im made of
Did I hear you say that this is victory?

Dont let these shakes go on
Its time we had a break from it
Send me to the rear
Where the tides of madness swell
And been sliding into hell
Oh, please dont let shakes go on
Dont let these shakes go on
Dont let these shakes go on

ONE MORE:

A hot and windy august afternoon
Has the trees in constant motion
With a flash of silver leaves
As theyre rocking in the breeze

The boy lies in the grass with one blade
Stuck between his teeth
A vague sensation quickens
In his young and restless heart
And a bright and nameless vision
Has him longing to depart

You move me ---
You move me ---
With your buildings and your eyes
Autumn woods and winter skies
You move me ---
You move me ---
Open sea and city lights
Busy streets and dizzy heights
You call me ---
You call me ---

The fawn-eyed girl with sun-browned legs
Dances on the edge of his dream
And her voice rings in his ears
Like the music of the spheres

The boy lies in the grass, unmoving
Staring at the sky
His mother starts to call him
As a hawk goes soaring by
The boy pulls down his baseball cap
And covers up his eyes

Too many hands on my time
Too many feelings ---
Too many things on my mind
When I leave I dont know
What Im hoping to find
When I leave I dont know
What Im leaving behind...

I won't believe in heaven and hell. No saints, no sinners, no
devil as well. No pearly gates, no thorny crown. You're always
letting us humans down. The wars you bring, the babes you
drown. Those lost at sea and never found, and it's the same the
whole world 'round. The hurt I see helps to compound that
Father, Son and Holy Ghost is just somebody's unholy hoax,
and if you're up there you'd perceive that my heart's here upon

Walking slowly helps your day
Or will help some of the new ones
A guided tour could be the lure
To visit your home made ruins
You've been noticing little things
You can't quite find a perspective
Ask a friend how far they'll bend
To get their heart's desire
Most will say with lots of pay
They'll stay just until they tire
You've been noticing little things
You can't quite find a perspective
Give 'em the money, give 'em the money
Give 'em the money, less work more pay

I want to live,
I want to give
I've been a miner

It's these expressions
I never give
That keep me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.
Keeps me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.

I've been to Hollywood
I've been to Redwood
I crossed the ocean
for a heart of gold
I've been in my mind,
it's such a fine line
That keeps me searching

And I'm getting old.
Keeps me searching

Hell, I'll go you guys one better, I got a whole damn song, not just a lyric!

"Life Sucks, Then You Die" by The Fools....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k_N2shMbqA&feature=related

This is a song about life as a spiraling force moving through the universe, unencumbered by modular time concepts. It's called "Life Sucks, Then You Die".

My house burned down in a flash of thunder
My wife ran off with a one-legged plumber
The crops fell dead when the riverbed went dry
My dog got squashed by a pick-up truck
My son ran away and got hooked on drugs
My daughter's knocked-up by the Class of '85

People say that life is good; it don't seem good to me
I'm lost without a paddle and I'm headed up shit Creek
People say that life is fun but I don't know why
As far as I can tell,...
LIFE SUCKS...then you die!

The government dumps its toxic waste
Right on top of my mother's grave
A team of experts say it won't do her no harm
But my sheep went crazy and killed my mule
I cut off my dick with a power tool
Fixing the hole where the meteor hit the barn (and it HURTS, too)

People say that life is good but I just piss and moan
I've got one foot on a banana peel, the other in the Twilight Zone
People say that life is fun but I don't know why
As far as I can tell,...
LIFE SUCKS...then you die!

(Let me hear some 'Yee-haw's out there!)

I went to the store to buy some shells
The gun went off and blew the owner to hell
Now I'm sitting here in jail, singing this song
And one guy wants to cut me with a knife
Another guy wants me to be his wife...
I wish they'd hang me before something really goes wrong!

People say that life is good; give thanks for what you have
When all you have is nothin', nothin' makes you glad.
People say that life is fun but I don't know why
As far as I can tell,...
LIFE SUCKS...then you die!

People say that life is fun but I don't know why
As far as I can tell,...
LIFE SUCKS...
LIFE SUCKS...
LIFE SUCKS...
Then you die!

(Let me hear some 'Yee-haw's out there!)

Cool song Bdog. No idea though. I'll try this one. It reminded me of my younger days when crossing continents on foot or biking around the world seemed a good idea.

the people in the village watch there children play
at the sight of a stranger they call the kids away
"just leave that man alone" I hear the mothers say
too long in the wasteland
too long in the wasteland
s' what made him that way

Well I give up all my sculpturing
'Cause my life had gone all sad
An I went to work down at the factory
It weren't art...but it weren't bad

So they put me on the assembly line
Puttin' plastic leaves on the plastic palms
Then they shipped then off to Los Angeles
Yeah it weren't art...but it weren't wrong

Now some say it's pathetic
When you give up your aesthetic
For a blue collar job in the factory
But all that exhibiting
Was just too damn inhibiting
For a beer drinking
Regular guy...like me

1. I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused.

2. I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

3. Like a drunk in a midnight choir, I have tried, in my way, to be free.

4. We were born before the wind, also younger than the sun, ere the bonnie boat was won, as we sailed into the mystic.

It's so easy to do nothing,
when you're busy night and day.
Take a step in one direction,
and take a step the other way.
But don't quit trying should you stumble,
don't give up shall you fall.
Keep on searching for the pathway
that leads you through the wall.

I'll see you on the other side

clearly i remember
pickin' on the boy
seemed a harmless little fuck
but we unleashed a lion
gnashed his teeth
and bit the recessed lady's breast

how could i forget
he hit me with a surprise left
my jaw left hurtin
dropped wide open
just like the day
like the day i heard
