View Full Version : Steve Forbert - Jackrabbit Slim Sansui Louie 06-19-2008, 08:24 AM Just discovered this album. Anyone else a fan? Celt 06-19-2008, 09:15 AM I remember him and the album title. But that's about it. Sorry. :dunno: davidb 06-19-2008, 09:18 AM Always been a fan. If you get a chance to see him. Do it! TOM1040 06-19-2008, 09:19 AM I have this, I think. Isn't this the one with romeos tune? I also have his "young guitar days" cd which is great. Stearman 06-19-2008, 09:26 AM Jackrabbit Slim, classic Steve Forbert. Romeo's Tune is the standout track, but whole disk is pretty good. Always liked Steve's style and he continues to produce quality work. Check out some of his more recent efforts like 'Just Like There's Nothin' To It' and 'Strange Names And New Sensations'. Sansui Louie 06-19-2008, 09:39 AM I really like "Complications" off of "Jackrabbit Slim". It might go into my acoustic set. :D Celt 06-19-2008, 09:40 AM For what its worth, I know he contributed "The Moonbeam Song" to "For The Love of Harry - Everybody Sings Nilsson". (1995, BMG) AU20K 06-19-2008, 09:45 AM Just discovered this album. Anyone else a fan? Yup, by crackie! He had about 4 or 5 back in the 80s if I remember correctly (which I prolly don't). Good midwestern sounding stuff. Luckyman 06-20-2008, 07:35 AM Just discovered this album. Anyone else a fan? I saw Steve play at a free concert at the local library last year. I brought along my copy of Jack Rabbit Slim, and had Steve autograph it for me. Can't wait to see him again this Summer. Oh yeah, I sat in the first row, 5 feet from the stage!:tresbon: Saint Johnny 06-20-2008, 12:26 PM I got it when it came out in the early 80's.:thmbsp: I think it came with a bonus 45, IIRC.:scratch2: (though I haven't listened to it in decades!.) I do remember liking it, and Steve Forbert, a whole lot. He had 5-6 records on Nemperor/CBS/Epic, in the 80's that are all well worth a few listens, especially 'Little Stevie Orbit'. :thmbsp: 2DualsNotEnough 06-20-2008, 12:28 PM IIRC Jackrabbit Slim was his second album. His first album,"Alive On Arrival" is a real gem.Rosanne Cash covered a song from his first album,"What kinda Girl".Great song. Jimmy Ashfan 06-20-2008, 03:34 PM I got it when it came out in the early 80's.:thmbsp: I think it came with a bonus 45, IIRC.:scratch2: (though I haven't listened to it in decades!.) I do remember liking it, and Steve Forbert, a whole lot. He had 5-6 records on Nemperor/CBS/Epic, in the 80's that are all well worth a few listens, especially 'Little Stevie Orbit'. :thmbsp: His first 3 on Nemperor, Alive on Arrival, Jack Rabbit Slim, and Little Stevie Orbit are his best IMHO, but there's a lot of other good stuff out there. The first 50,000 copies or so of Jack Rabbit Slim had a 45 with Oil on it, which was a rather low-key damning of all of the oil tanker and off-shore platform oil leaks happening during that era. Oil is on a nice CD compilation of his Nemperor stuff and some other unreleased songs called What Kind of Guy?. Celt 06-20-2008, 04:02 PM The first 50,000 copies or so of Jack Rabbit Slim had a 45 with Oil on it... Sounds messy! :D Looks like I need to check this guy out. I did take notice of "What Kind Of Girl?" on Rosanne Cash's 'Seven Year Ache' back in '81. Sansui Louie 06-20-2008, 04:13 PM He's a 'regular' at the used record stores I frequent. I'll keep an eye out for more copies and offer 'em up for trade or something. ARJohn 06-20-2008, 07:26 PM Been a fan since his first disc , "evergreenboy " from the 90's is awesome , met him a few times and had the pleasure of seeing him on his first tour for "alive " and then years later in a library , and then a few times in a little bar after that , very nice guy who can really turn a phrase . His live acoustic disc is great also . Got this poster at a bar show and chatted him up a bit , had it mounted , plus he played Gib's back then .And yes Jackrabbit came with the 45 of Oil Song . Guy raved about Steve Forbert - he'd just seen him or was going to see him, don't remember. Didn't think too much about it until I saw Alive On Arrival at the record store - went ahead and picked it up. Enjoyed it ever since. Lately added Little Stevie Orbit from the thrift store. I will definitely pick up anything else I run across. Alan ARJohn 06-20-2008, 10:27 PM Another guy that doesn't get the prop's is Dave Alvin , if you like Steve's songwriting check out Mr Alvin if you get the chance "Blackjack David " in HDCD is a wonderful disc . Pavioni 06-20-2008, 11:22 PM If memory serves, The Oil Song was a 7" 331/3? - gonna have to dig mine out. Big Forbert fan since his first, my all time favorite disc is "The American in Me" which still gets played monthly. Only saw him live once, when he opened for Bonnie Raitt. That was a great evening. ruffian 06-21-2008, 01:37 AM I have 3 copies of Jack Rabbit Slim that I have never played. There seems to be a copy whenever I buy someones collection. Maybe I'll give one a spin now. Now that I look, one has Oil with it. Another has Live Fm Special (7" 33.3) and the third copy is going in the trash. I did notice that the used record store had a few more copies than I do. davidb 06-21-2008, 07:50 AM If memory serves, The Oil Song was a 7" 331/3? - gonna have to dig mine out.
