If one of my favorite pieces is ...

Luigi Boccherini's String Quintet (Quintettino) for 2 violins, viola & 2 cellos in C major ("La musica notturna delle strade di Madrid"), G. 324 (Op. 30) as found on the Master and Commander Soundtrack ... with Richard Erdoes, Michael Fisher, Simon Oswell, Timothy Landauer, Bruce Dukov; conducted by Richard Tognetti and Christopher Gordon

... what other Boccherini should I get on LP or CD? I'm no classical music buff, but would value learning more about this composer by listening to other great recordings.

Rob,

The Boccherini Quartet (http://www.amazon.com/Boccherini-Trio-Quartet-2-Quintets/dp/B000GQLB74/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1214008820&sr=1-17)'s CD is very nice, as is the King's Consort (http://www.amazon.com/Boccherini-DAstorga-Gritton-Bickley-Consort/dp/B000026CRC/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1214008820&sr=1-14)'s Stabat Mater on Hyperion.

Thanks PM .. thought I might have to self-bump this thread. I'll try those. Much appreciated.

(I have another King's Consort - a Handel / Telemann "Water Music" CD - it is excellent)

Luigi Boccherini was a very prolific composer. There exist many many fine recordings of his work out there on CD and LP. Just sample it all!

He was a cellist, hence many works for cello, string quartet, or string quintet (that is, quartet plus one more cello). He also wrote a fair amount of orchestral music.

He's quirky, inventive, and totally original. Like Haydn on Heroin. Enjoy!

I have most of my LP's packed for my move, but I will see what I can do to remember...I have a lot of his stuff, and I would add that its worthwhile thinking of adding to your collection Albinoni and Corelli.

The Cello Concerto #9 is one of my favourite Boccherini pieces.

Searching through my database I find two Sinfonia (C Major and D Minor) as the only two pieces of his that I have, will have to fix that.

Also if you can spot them: The Boccerini works for string quartet plus guitar. This is fabulous! The guitar creates a percussive rythmic texture that makes the string quartet sound quite unlike any other chamber music.

Many thanks - the pic of the Artartia quartet above is terrific. Looks like he's jamming on that guitar, while wearing sneakers of course. I'll be picking up some of these and reporting back.
