View Full Version : Supertramp: Any Fans Here?
Njord Noatun 06-21-2008, 10:30 PM Took my dog to the beach this morning before it got too hot, and as the temperatures soared into the 80's :yikes:, I retreated to inside to make it an all-Supertramp day, and listened to (LPs):
Self-titled
Crime of the Century
Crisis? What Crisis?
Even in the Quitest Moments
Breakfast in America
Famous Last Words
Brother Where You Bound
I really like their music - although quite lightweight, it is very listenable and interesting, and they barely have any mediocre material - at least not on any of the above albums. :thmbsp:
I went to AK to see what others think about them, as I often do when listening: Found that, out of 171,000 threads on AK, not a single one had Supertramp in the title (at least, that's what the Search function says!), which is hard to believe.
Growing up in Europe, I could hardly turn on the radio without hearing one of their numerous mega-hits. Does anyone else here on AK care for them?
Sir.Byrd 06-21-2008, 10:35 PM If it pops up on Pandora I won't skip it, but I wouldn't go out of my way JUST to buy an album.
Rat44 06-21-2008, 10:43 PM Crime Of The Century is a great album. Sounds good on a good system loud.
wajobu 06-21-2008, 10:45 PM Indelibly Stamped? Not a bad LP either...on the cusp of Crime.
RussinOhio 06-21-2008, 10:46 PM I like some of their stuff. "Long Way Home" is a great tune.
Russ
wajobu 06-21-2008, 10:47 PM Jimmy Cream, was king...
Asylum is an excellent tune. Even though Even in the Quiest Moments got significant airplay in 1977, I think that Crime and Crisis were their best LPs.
Dreamer...you silly little Dreamer...
Rex Everything 06-21-2008, 10:52 PM Big fan here:thmbsp: Have been since we moved down here('84) where the radio is on all day everyday :)
BroonsBane 06-21-2008, 11:02 PM I've been a Supertramp fan for a very long time and their LP's see my platter on a very regular basis :thmbsp:
Drybasement 06-21-2008, 11:19 PM Crime Of The Century...:thmbsp:

vinyldavid 06-21-2008, 11:47 PM I like Even In The Quietest Moments.....
makes me think that there are birds in the room....
cmk59 06-21-2008, 11:54 PM How could one NOT like Supertramp...unless they (perhaps) are just not into pop music, per se.
I think they were one of the seminal groups of their period! I always thought it was funny/ironic that, as a 19-year-old Airman in 1979 and on my first posting outside the U.S. (to RAF Upper Heyford in the U.K.), the most popular LP (!) at the time in the U.K. and hottest up-and-comer in the U.S. was "Breakfast In America!" :music::banana::thmbsp:
They (you KNOW as a Silver Series collector, I was gonna sneak THIS one in) were real PIONEERs of pop!:D

birddog 06-22-2008, 12:05 AM "Even in the Quietest Moments" is a great album, and the title track is a personal favorite of mine
Saint Johnny 06-22-2008, 01:13 AM Crime Of The Century is a great album.
I love this record! Along with 'Quietest Moments'. :thmbsp:
I didn't care for much after these two, though.
hifi_nut 06-22-2008, 06:04 AM My life changed when a friend played Crime of the Century for the first time.
Njord Noatun 06-22-2008, 09:35 AM Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that their album covers are great, too:

stereofanboy 06-22-2008, 11:31 AM Listening to Supertramp makes me feel good, which is one of the main reasons to listen to music.
Unican_Eric 06-22-2008, 11:32 AM Crime of the Century
Crisis? What Crisis?
Even in the Quietest Moments
Breakfast in America
These are the ones I listen to most. Favorite songs from them all would be Fools Overture, Hide in your Shell and School.
kcollins4 06-22-2008, 11:43 AM You're bloody well right, I like Supertramp! IIRC, one of the last big pop groups to not use synthesizers.
KentTeffeteller 06-22-2008, 12:18 PM Hi Njord,
Love Supertramp! Crime Of The Century, Even In The Quietest Moments, and Breakfast In America are favorites. Best pressings for audiophile nirvana are: Crime Of The Century: MFSL UltraDisc, Even In The Quietest Moments: UK A&M early pressing, Breakfast In America: A&M Canada Audiophile, UK A&M early pressing or US A&M early pressing. On CD, the early A&M issues are great. Get the Japanese Denon made or European market CBS/Sony or Polygram Hannover made discs.
terra1 06-22-2008, 12:56 PM Supertramp made a big splash with their unique sound. Vocals and arrangements. I was amazed by the clarity and quality of Crime of the Century LP when I first got it. Spread quite quickly in my circle of friends where we were always sharing the latest "You gotta here this!" finds. One of those Columbus moments.
Njord Noatun 06-22-2008, 01:03 PM Listening....makes me feel good, which is one of the main reasons to listen to music. Me, too. Except for those occasions when I just want to feel depressed or ruffle my emotions - I use Pink Floyd for that. :tears::music:
:D
Kaffeen 06-22-2008, 06:34 PM I like 'em a lot! They got a lot of airplay in the late 70s, my coming of music age. They seem to be somewhat under the radar and not part of a lot of people's music collections (people other than AKers, I mean), but when you hear one of their songs, it dawns on you that this is a really good band. Always enjoy serendipitously catching them when surfing the FM dial. The album cover for Breakfast in America is iconic.
asoundhound 06-22-2008, 09:58 PM i've got almost all of their studio recordings. i think the only one i'm missing is their first.
i have:
even in the quietest moments
crime of the century
indelibly stamped
brother where you bound
crisis, what crisis
breakfast in america
famous last words
spaceman 06-22-2008, 10:43 PM I'm running a little late on this thread, but yeah, they're good. :thmbsp: So far on vinyl I have Breakfast In America, Crime Of The Century, and Brother Where You Bound. I haven't actually listened to any of them yet, lol, they're all fairly recent aquisitions.
Njord Noatun 06-22-2008, 10:48 PM Just picked up this one today (as well as a duplicate of Indelibly Stamped) - Live in Paris:

I think I have all their albums ever issued as LPs now.
e2e4c7c5 06-23-2008, 12:52 AM 'Crime Of The Century' was without a doubt the #1 album to start a serious weekend of partying in our company barracks when I was stationed in Germany.
Always bring back good memories when I hear that album now.

outshined 06-24-2008, 01:01 AM Great band. Well recorded, too. If your system has enough bottom end, the bass drum will kick your ass on "Child of Vision" from Breakfast...
SkyLounger 06-24-2008, 01:58 AM I love 'em!
My daughter absolutely loves 'em!
Bought the Roger Hodgson DVD from his 2007 show in Montreal (Place des Arts), himself and a sax player/vocalist from London, Ont. with him. Absolutely delightful....
Stoffie 06-24-2008, 11:06 AM Listening to them right now. Loved them since I was a kid (thanks dad for hinting me in the right direction).
Listening to the Very best of CD now, since my record player is out for servicing...
ScramMan2 06-24-2008, 11:33 AM ... Bloody well right ...
Sansui Louie 06-24-2008, 04:35 PM Longtime fan. :D

I have most of their LPs too, but yet haven't spun any of their vinyl in 20+ years. Until today when I picked up Paris. It's a very good live recording.
Crime of the century on mfsl vinyl is quite nice
Gohan 06-26-2008, 11:32 PM I am a Supertramp fan

onepixel 06-27-2008, 01:10 AM I listened to Paris earlier again... I like!
BroonsBane 06-27-2008, 08:01 AM I listened to Paris earlier again... I like!
It's a great recording, they put on a fantastic show.
MrZero63 06-27-2008, 08:11 AM One of the few bands I really wish I had seen in concert. :thmbsp:
resqguy 06-27-2008, 07:18 PM Back in the day I bought Even In The Quietest Moments and became a fan. I bought Breakfast on the day it was released. They toured and came to the Bay Area soon after. I remember being surprised that both Rick and Roger were both singing the high notes.
After Roger left the band they seemed to lose their appeal to me.
A few months ago I was bored and searching YouTube and found this version of Fools Overture.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nob9k558LVc
After hearing this I have since gotten back into their work. I'm truly amased how well it has held up after all these years.
onepixel 06-27-2008, 07:28 PM Back in the day I bought Even In The Quietest Moments and became a fan. I bought Breakfast on the day it was released. They toured and came to the Bay Area soon after...
I was suppose to go to that show!
resqguy 06-27-2008, 07:42 PM I hate to admit it but I don't remember much about the show. I paid extra $$ for better seats and ended up sitting behind an obstruction and couldn't see all the stage. We eventually moved closer to the stage later.
I bought their DVD Supertramp, The Story so far but it is light on concert footage. I can't understand all the live concert footage on YouTube, you would think someone would release more contect on DVD.
I came across this article when looking for a source for the Paris CD.
http://mixonline.com/news/headline/supertramp-cupsnstrings-restoration-072106/
It seems there is some unreleased video that has just been restored.
beans 06-27-2008, 07:45 PM Like the songwriting, don't like the voice of Roger Hodgson. I have Crisis? What Crisis? (1/2 speed master), Even In The Quietest Moments (Sweet Thunder 1/2 speed), Paris, Breakfast...now if I could find my MFSL Crime o Century.
onepixel 06-27-2008, 07:45 PM My friend had extra tickets, but I didn't go because at that moment I really didn't like them much. Well after they toured I was banging myself in the head.
kdschreiner 06-29-2008, 08:03 PM That receiver in your car play Breakfast In America to death. That's one of the few things in my collection that a friend burned for me recently. I hadn't listened to it in all of these year and it still holds up.
Once again, thanks for the memories.
K.
Njord Noatun 06-29-2008, 08:42 PM Once again, thanks for the memories.
I can assure you - the pleasure was all mine. And most importantly, sit down here, make yourself comfortable, and welcome to AK! :thmbsp:
OH ya I got to se them with yes by acident.I think it was 87 I got snowed in in tronto and stranded in the grayhound station I hit it off with a girl from greenland and she had a extra ticket! IT went from a stranded nightmear to one of the best weekends of my life.
B Stable 07-13-2008, 09:17 PM I told you so!
theophile 07-14-2008, 01:48 AM Since this is the only Supertramp thread.....
I got turned-on to these guys early, but it was 'Quietest Moments' which made me take notice.
My collection consists of
Crisis-A&M half speed master
Crime-A&M half speed master
Quietest Moments-A&M half speed master
Breakfast-A&M half speed master.
I've owned the (non UHQR) MoFi half speed master of 'Crime'.The A&M half speed is much better.
I could see why some wouldn't like this band, but I think they were a talented bunch of musicians and good songwriters.
The icing on the cake is the great production and recording standards. :thmbsp:
onepixel 07-14-2008, 02:29 AM theophile,
Find yourself the 1st self-titled LP. It doesn't sound anything like their later 70/80s stuff. For that matter it doesn't even sound like them. One of my favorites from the band.
NAD613 07-14-2008, 02:54 AM I finally bought "Breakfast In America" last year. It's an album I'd been wanting to buy for the last 15 years or so but never got around to buying it.
