Hey, so where's the MD thread?
Isn't MiniDisc considered Vintage by now?

Probably should be :D, but it's a source by definition... so you'll find MD discussions in the Digital Formats forum (http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=25).

Oh, over on the other side of the tracks, eh?
:music:
I've been doing field recordings with MD for several years, and fidelity, especially uncompressed, is great.
Now looking at MD for transfer of 78's to digital (just found a Sony 520 ay GW).
Shouldn't be losing any info on that format change, I wouldn't think.

How do you record uncompressed to MD? I thought by nature that MD used data compression.

Hi-MD equipment can record audio to Hi-MD media in uncompressed PCM (16bits/44.1khz, i.e. CD format) as well as in Sony's ATRAC3plus encoding at 256kbps ("Hi-SP") and 64kbps ("Hi-LP").
(from MiniDisc.org)
Not many (if any) Hi-MD decks though, only portables, as it is a dying format.
I don't often record in Linear PCM mode, but field recordings at that setting will literally make you turn your head when listening with headphones.
SP sounds fine too, although I haven't recorded much live music under controlled multi mic & mixer settings.
Don't use LP, what's the point in carrying that much music on a disc? 7 hours in SP is plenty!
And for transcribing 78's to digital, I can't imagine a better medium. No way do I want to deal with tape.
Just saw a portable MD mixer/recorder on CL, only 100; new price was 2500.
It's got me thinking...

Sure thing. I'll run and post some tests as soon as I can.
