A friend told me that a local thrift has a JBL/UREI 6230 power amplifier on the shelf. Forum search turns up a bit, but I'm looking for more impressions from those who have used this amp. Given that it's a JBL product, I should expect good things, but hey...

So. Whaddaya got, AK?

I have it's bigger brother, the 6290. If it is built the same it is basically a dual mono design, having discrete amlifiers. Here is a linke to the manual:6230/6260 (http://www.jblproservice.com/pdf/Vintage%20JBL-UREI%20Electronics/JBL-6230_%206260manual.pdf).

These amps are over-built to take an adverse environment. They have full DC protection and clipping indicators. The 6230 is rated to 150 w. at 4 ohms but it has 200 w. ampification sections. It is bridgeable into 8 ohms, also. They are a beast. Even the smaller 6230 weighs 26 lbs.. Buy it if you can. They have very good resale value.

UREI used top grade components. You could pound them all night in any club/touring system. They'll loaf along in any home environment.

Went back the day after I heard about it. Of course, it was gone.

Sorry to hear you missed it.

For all things JBL, look to the Lansing Heritage website for advice. Most JBL electronics were worth looking into but as with any company, there can be clunkers too.

There will always be other scores for those who are patient.

Bart

To those that have used the 6200 series of amps, do you have a warm-to-hot transformer?
I have a beastly 6260 that I'm currently using as my main daily amp (runs 12 hours a day) and I love what it does for my music, but the big hunk of iron gets pretty dern warm with just light use.
Also, the clip indicators blip on and off a few times when I shut it down.
Anyone else notice these traits?
Thanks!

My 6260 does the same dance with the LEDs when turning off, here's what the manual has to say (attached pic).

I pulled the 6260 out of service because I think it's too damn hot. :scratch2:
So my plan is to set the bias and possibly tighten down the transformer bolts.
According to the schematic,

bias for channel A can be set at R37, and should be 150 mV. Am I correct in this layman's assumption?
Has anyone set the bias on their 6260? How would I set up the measurement using a DVM?

Thanks for any help!:thmbsp:

So I went ahead and set the bias to 150 mV and it still ran pretty warm with no input. It seemed that it was set for ~300 mV prior to me getting my fingers in there. I measured the mV from one emitter to another emitter of complimentary outputs per channel. Maybe when the weather cools down in some months I'll slip it back into the main rig and see how it does.

After reinstalling my Adcom GFA-535II from its few month hiatus, I have to say that its ~60 wpc may be a better match for my AR 2ax's...

Now if I can only get my Hitachi Mosfet amp working, I'll have quite an interesting shootout waiting for me. :music:
