View Full Version : Shure 5x any good??
eteller 06-25-2008, 09:46 AM I got my ebay Technics SL-1700 via Fed Ex yesterday, cleaned it up, and set it up. It came with a Shure 5x on a Realistic/Shure cartridge (not shure of the # on that). I planed on using my ATS12s Shibata on it anyways so I didn't mess with checking the set up on the Shure. I did try it out on a flea mkt. record and it sounded okay. Were these any good? The SL-1700 is great BTW. At first I was a little dissapointed doing a/b comparrisons with my SL-D3 it sounded pretty much the same, till I figured out the cartridge was tilted a little on 1700, once I got it horizontal with the record, it REALLY woke up. I think there is some wear in the detent groove in the tonearm which allowed the cartridge to rotate a little.
BrocLuno 06-25-2008, 11:03 AM You mean like an M53?

Well, the R5X was a rebadged M75ED Type 2, so it's a decent cartridge--.2 x .7 elliptical, .75-1.5g tracking. Even if the cart was a lower model, the 5X stylus makes it a 5X.
BrocLuno 06-25-2008, 04:48 PM Ah Hah, another M75 in someone else's clothing. Is there a list of SHURE aliases? I have a Shure stylus chart, but it does not list the 5X :(

Now, you, too, can be a Shure expert. :D

The only error on this chart, and it is repeated each time, is the measurement for the hyperelliptical stylus. It is correct in Shure's original literature included with the cart, but whoever compiled this chart wasn't focused. As it correctly appears in documentation it is .0002 x .0015. In mils (divide by 1000) it should be .2 x 1.5, not .2 x .15.
