View Full Version : Making an auto table a menual table?
vinyldavid 06-25-2008, 02:33 PM Is it considered sacrilege to make a Miracord XS-200 into a manual table?
I was lookin at the bottom of mine and I can tell that some parts are bent beyond imagination and that some stuff it not connected....
I thought that I could just remove all of the auto funtions from it and leave the buttons to make it look stock.....is that consiered a 'nono' in the TT world?
shrinkboy 06-25-2008, 02:37 PM hey, its your turntable, so rock on. sure won't hurt anything and its not like you have a precious item to preserve the value of. last year i took a stock lenco L78 and removed everything but the motor, the speed selector, the spindle bearing and platter, plopped in a linn basik tonearm and came up with a sweet manual TT...
avguytx 06-25-2008, 02:40 PM The JVC I use in my living room setup is fully automatic but I use it as a semi-auto. I set the needle on the record and let it return it. As far as yours goes, it's up to you and if you're going to resell it or not. If not, call it good to go.

I don't want to re-sell it at all.
I just want to use it in any way shape or form that I can.
I guess that it'll be tear down time later today.
Sansui Louie 06-25-2008, 03:29 PM Well, I have a Pioneer PL-55DX that is now a single speed turntable instead of 33 and 45...

The question is... what speed? I hope it isn't a 39 rpm now. :D
As for the OP, I would suggest you can do as you like, but you might want to make your changes "reversible" and at least keep all the parts, so that if you or some future owner decide they want to return it to original functionality, it would still be possible.

I doubt that I could make the changes reversible.....I think soon as I remove the first screw it's done for, in the auto-table sense...
Sansui Louie 06-25-2008, 03:42 PM LOL! 33. This was before I knew about the wonders of DeOxit. I found that the 33-45 switch had gone bad, and if the switch was open, it was at 45 rpm, and closed, 33. So I cut the wires from the switch and hardwired it at 33 rpm.
BrocLuno 06-25-2008, 04:57 PM No need for de-oxit with a soldering iron :)
David, just make it look and run cool and you have a hot rod :) That's what we all did before this stuff became "collectible" :( You going to use the stock arm or keep looking for a different one?

I think it looks cool right now!!!!
That's why I am going to leave it stock-LOOKING, but I have some sswitches and stuff and I am going to make the arm-post the on/off switch for the platter.
It would be an interesting exercise to try to mount a Shure M232 on this...I do have one....and I can mount a working cart on it....
but for now, I am going to try to make a new mount for the arm, or modify the existing mount (which is mart of the auto-function setup)....
.....now you've for me thinkin.....:D
I could find a way to mount the Shure until I can get a way to mount the standard arm....It'd look weird, but do the job...
so then all I would have to do is strip out all of the mechanicals underneath except for the motor control stuff...(just a cap)
All those parts, which vibrate because of motor vibrations and the sound field from the speakers, are not making your table quieter. If you don't need their functions, gettin rid of them will probably make the table sound better.
vinyldavid 06-25-2008, 11:00 PM The deed is done...
I had to take apart the arm and cut the cableing to remove the auto assembly.....so it looks like I'l be trying to mount the Shure arm soon as I fond out the mounting length from the spindle....
And I'll replace the switch in the armpost that makes it the motor on/off switch.
But that's for Friday.
