I notice that there is no forum for Kenwood owners here on AK.
But I have seen Kenwood mentioned in many posts.
Many of you list Kenwood equipment in your signatures.
I have seen a nice Kenwood receiver used as an avatar.

If you like Kenwood, join the Kenwood Owner's Association social group!
We can get together to talk about our great Kenwood gear and share pictures and specs.

To join the social group, go to your User Control Panel and click on Social Groups under Networking. When you get to the group page, there is a Join Group button at the top right.

This group is open to anyone.

Only members are allowed to post in the social group!

My first system was a Kenwood KR-4070 with a Dual TT and AR-4x's that I picked up at a pawn shop in 1982. That was a great little receiver! 40 watts per channel and a very good tuner. I have owned 3 of them. I gave all 3 to friends. One friend is still using his at work.

At present, I have a KR-6600 in the repair pile, a working KR-3400, a KD-2070 TT and a KD-3100 TT, a GE-1000 equalizer, and a pair of Realistic speakers that I have been told were made by Kenwood (okay, I admit it, their speakers weren't so great).

I just recently parted out a set of KL-999DX speakers. I gave up on trying to find a replacement for a bad horn and two bad tweeters. Though they were certainly not my favorite pair, they were the only pair (out of about 13 others) that sounded good in the den of my last rented house.

I think Kenwood makes great stuff! It's time they got their due!

If ya think Kenwood rules, join up today!

I don't have any high end Kenwood equipment, but I've got a KT-5500 tuner I bought new in 1978, and a KA-405 amp I bought new in 1981. Both have been jammin' in my unheated garage for the past 10 years. When I found the Audiokarma site, I decided they needed to be cleaned up and brought inside :) Both are still working great !

This is the KR-3400. I believe it was the second from the bottom of the line, I'd guess 20-25 wpc. I bought it at a thrift store. It is filthy, probably never been serviced. Hasn't been plugged up in over 5 years until the other day. There is no antenna connected to the unit. I live in an aluminum house trailer in the hills. It is tuned to a local, low-wattage, college operated radio station. Their transmitter is about 20 miles from here, through the hills, and there is a thunderstorm brewing.

Not many CD players look this good even today (the 7030 from almost 20 years ago.. it`s an excellent cd-player.. neutral sounding and built like a brick!) my next source upgrade will be a DAC for this'un I think...

Also got myself a recordplayer today branded, Kenwood (KD-21R) It looks OK, but my records are 500 miles away from here, so I havent checked (it was a freebie).... guess it`s just an average deck.. but it`s quite heavy! .. so perhaps Kenwood has put some quality into even this bpc looking thing!...? My memory of it is pretty vague but I think it was a change in circuit topology that most of the Japanese manufacturers adopted in their amplifiers, way back when. Maybe the early 80's. My recollection is that it eliminated some coupling capicitors somewhere in the path, which may have had the effect of widening the bandwith and reducing distortion or phase-shift.

Your unit is probably the first generation to incorporate it, given that you have a switch to engage or bypass.

It was a time when the big Japanese companies were addressing the increasingly common perception that their gear sounded less good than Harman/Kardon's, NAD's, etc.

Like some others, I can't take the time for a separate group.

One Kenwood trivia item that might be of interest to the lunatic fringe (not that there's anything wrong with that):

In 1986 I bought a 26" Kenwood television. It turned out to be an NEC but with a different cabinet, plus NEC's had the control panel above the screen, and Kenwood had it below.
It worked well for about 10 years, then developed a problem which I was able to trace to a big circuit board (probably a crack or a cold-solder).

My first stereo receiver was a Kenwood KR-6160 purchased new in 1970. I had it for about 6 years, repaired once. For some reason I've never had another Kenwood piece (except the tv) but they have certainly made some nice stuff.

I still use my KA-9150 on a regular basis. I bought it from the AFEES Catalog Sales when I was in the Navy. It cost me a whopping $175 bucks, and it is STILL the cleanest, underrated (in terms of power), and most badass looking integrated amplifier that I have ever owned, except for maybe the AU-20000 from Sansui....that Sansui had a class all of it's own, and a pricetag to match.....

I would never give up my integrated amp, but I can't say that I was never really fond of their speakers though. I listened to the KT-7550 tuner, and I liked the sound, but I bought the TX-9800 from Pioneer instead.

Old Kenwood is still the best Kenwood.

If there happens to be a forum dedicated to Kenwood equipment, count me in! Also, can I get one of those fancy little decoder rings that everyone seems to be talking about?

In short, "DC coupled" amps pass frequencies down to 0 Hz, which is DC current. Straight DC is harmful to speakers, so it is highly undesirable. Older amp designs put a hi-pass filter capacitor before the outputs, to filter out DC. However, most sources do not have a DC component, so this capacitor is not necessary. Engaging "DC Coupling" removes this capacitor from the signal path. The only times to be concerned about DC are with turntables, and sources that have a known DC offset problem.

If I understand this right, I can use my CD player and have the amp "DC coupled" with no problems? Or, should I just leave it alone?
Thanks
Donald

biker, what is the "normal" position of the switch? If it's DC leave it if you don't get turn on/off thumps indicationg DC offset adjustment. If it's AC leave it alone. You can try it in DC to see if it thumps at on/off.
doubtful you'll hear any difference AC or DC.
My KA7100 amp is a DC coupled design with no switch and I have no probs .

Here is a pic of my KA-900 with the Sigma Drive (atop my SX-D7000). Very nice sounding amp. I'm going to work it into my rotation, and hopefully find some suitable speaker wire/cable to use on the sigma speaker outputs.

I am now waiting for my KR-6400 to show up. I'll post pics when it gets here, and I have her cleaned up and presentable.

These were my first Kenwood pieces of gear. I bought them last summer but only had them for a few months. I liked the sound of the amp very much and the tuner was surprisingly good for an entry level tuna. I reluctantly sold them to a friend/co-worker who needed a system after moving out of her spouse's house into a place of her own. I paid $80 for the amp from a fellow AK'er and $40 for the tuner and sold them for the same amount. I also sold her a Rotel CDP for $75 and a pair of Sony bookshelf speakers for $40. Total cost to her $235, total profit for me, $0. Whenever I see her out and about, she tells me her stereo rocks!! Priceless!! :D

I've since picked up a Basic C2 and am using it in my main system. Nice minty preamp.

Here's my humble contribution - the KA-8150. The Bronze face. Good stable punchy character. Nice defined tight bass - I really like this heavy dual powered beast.

Love the volume knob - it is located right where is should be - IN THE MIDDLE. Big shiny knob with an excellent feel, second only to the Technics 8600 integrated's volume knob. Come to think about it, it's time to give the Technics some attention...mmmm :scratch2:

Yes, lifetime. If you ever leave, you will be tracked down and forced to listen to "Sing with Mitch Miller" 8-tracks on a Yorx, through Panasonic Thrusters.

My 6400 showed up yesterday. Took her straight to the work table and began by cleaning the interior. There was about about a 1/2" on stuff that tells me this baby sat in a garage or attic for quite some time. Cleaned up real good, and she got the normal de-oxit treatment. This 6400 sounds really good, gave it a good stout workout. Note: I only stacked to test the 6400 on my main system, lets me check all functions with my Pioneer processors, and I didn't feel like lugging my SX-D7000 out to do this. I'm going to repaint the case a silver color. The side panels are in rough shape (vinyl wrapped), so I may redo them in real wood veneer. I think she looks great! Small pic is of the auction photo.
