I inherited this turntable from my parents when I started listening to vinyl about 2 years ago. As far as I can tell its in great shape and it does what I need it to do - play the records. I am looking to get a new TT and was really just curious about the one i have right now since I am not too good with the technical side of turntables...

What I do Know:
direct drive Sansui P-D10
Audio-Technica AT247E cartridge
Audio-Technica ATS10 needle

thanks

In order to see a significant improvement in the turntable, you would have to look for a top line vintage table, or a new one which would set you back at least $300-400. Being DD, the specs on your Sansui are very good and the low mass arm affords you the ability to use a variety of cartridges if so you choose. My suggestion would be to keep the Sansui and change either the stylus or the cartridge. The cartridge is a good one, but the needle is an entry level conical which is not a good match for the arm. You could pick up an ATS12S (Shibata AKA line contact) for around $50 (lpgear.com) which would significantly improve the sound, track lighter, and extract more detail from the music.

Hey,

I am actually servicing out a P-D11 which is the P-MOUNT version of your table. Different tonearm is all. This is actually a nice little table. Being taht you have the P-D10 with the non-T4P arm, I would get a NEW stylus for that AT cart and enjoy the HECK out of it...

Now, if you feel inclined to Upgrade, I just got a P1 with Glass Platter, RB-250 arm with Stainless Steel endstub/Counterweight and LP Gear AT95SA cart and it is GREAT...but it was not a couple of houndred bucks either...

That AT cart you have can accept the ATN12S stylus which is available everywhere...pop that on, confirm your alignment on the cartridge is good, set the tracking force to 1.5 grams, same with your anti-skating...and enjoy that little table.

...it really is a surprisingly NICE sounding deck.
