Jeff djnagle 07-01-2008, 10:01 PM I'm sorry I can't make this one. I will be up north sitting in a Tiki bar thinking of you all. Cheers. jmathers 07-16-2008, 06:56 AM Don't forget: SMAC Meet THIS Saturday, July 19th from 1pm-6pm. Hope to see you there:banana: grumpy 07-16-2008, 07:27 AM Ross better have a turntable set up ! :) jmathers 07-16-2008, 09:20 AM Yep. He will indeed have a turntable set up for the meet. Jeff grumpy 07-17-2008, 08:47 AM I will be there, even though he no longer has his Maplenoll or Lowthers... Bauhausler 07-18-2008, 08:35 PM So I made a bunch more. I'm really looking forward to having visitors over on Saturday. There will be plenty of food/drink. The place might not be totally cleaned up but I pushed the disorder out to the margins. I have the Acoustat 1+1 speakers running on a Krell power amp & they sound fine. I've set up a second system with my Altec Boleros and a modded Sony Playstation as a source. The amp in tha tsystem will be Kegger's new SE tube rig. The turntable is acting fiddly but should play fine. I live next to the Chase bank on Coolidge Ave just south of 10 1/2 mile (Lincoln) in Huntington Woods. If the street's congested, just park in the bank lot. If we're not answering the door, just let yourselves in & holler (but watch out for the dog!) See Ya! Ross Bauhausler 07-18-2008, 08:36 PM I will be there, even though he no longer has his Maplenoll or Lowthers... The Maplenoll's gone. The guy who bought my Lowther cabs will be here for the meet. He fixed them up really nice. grumpy 07-18-2008, 08:40 PM What cart is on the table you have. I know squid was telling Keg he could bring his Denon table. Id love to bring some nice vinyl over but am hesitant about putting them down on a fickle table. Would you be open to someone bringing a table over ? I will be arriving a little later since I'm sitting with the kids till the wife gets home from work. Looking forward to seeing old and new faces as well as trying some of the tater salad..if Any's left :) Bauhausler 07-18-2008, 09:08 PM What cart is on the table you have. Looking forward to seeing old and new faces as well as trying some of the tater salad..if Any's left :) Dave; The table is a B&O 4002 with a MMC20CL cart. It plays fine and is foolproof. The problem is the arm belt is worn & it needs a nudge to return to rest. It doesn't affect how it plays but it could stymie someone who didn't know that. I'd be fine with someone bringing a different table. No need to let me know in advance, as it's easy to swap them in and out here. I have a VPI 16 cleaner set up as well. See you tomorrow. Ski 07-19-2008, 02:39 PM Sorry to miss another one guys. I'm sitting here waiting for my daughter to be dropped off. Drybasement 07-19-2008, 08:05 PM Another great meeting. Thanks Ross for the beer and snacks and for being such a great host. I sure enjoy these meetings. Cheers Bauhausler 07-19-2008, 08:41 PM because there are 12 untouched beers in the cooler and all of the bottled water, iced tea and pop are empty! Plus, nothing got broken. Thanks to everyone who attended today. It was a blast and I made a lot of new friends. Looking forward to next time! Ross dmax99 07-19-2008, 09:10 PM Another great meeting. Thanks Ross for the beer and snacks and for being such a great host. I sure enjoy these meetings. Cheers +1 Another highly excellent meet.It was difficult to listen to the tunes, but the conversations were great. Thanks to Ross for hosting. justrideit 07-19-2008, 09:29 PM What an awesome place Ross has. A virtual stereophonic \ potatoe salad emporium! The whole house is a frickin Mancave!! Lots of great food and drink. A real good turnout. I met some new members and re-acquainted myself with some members I had'nt seen in a while. I brought an international AK'er, Jim from Corruna, Ontario. He really enjoyed the day. We didn't want to leave. I got to see a lot of really great Accuphase equipment. A real blast from the past for me. A big thanks to Rob for spinning the vinyl and educating some newb's on record storage. Thanks Kegger and Squidward for the ST70 advice. I'm Looking forward to the project. I didn't get to met Ross's wife but I can assure everyone she is an angel. Viva SMAC!! dnewma04 07-19-2008, 09:29 PM Very good meet. Every time I have been at your house, I feel right at home. Andyman 07-19-2008, 09:35 PM Thanks Ross for another great day of food, drink, music, people, and gear. It was great seeing all the regulars plus meeting a few new folks. Well done!! :thmbsp: jmathers 07-20-2008, 08:16 AM Yep, many thanks Ross. Huge group of attendees. Was this the biggest ever? Great food and beverage spread and tons of gear. What more could you ask for? Just so new folks know - we do not expect hosts to put on a massive spread of food and drink for SMAC meets. If you host, this is NOT an expectation. A few chips and some pop and some tunes are enough. Ross went above and beyond the call of duty on this one. Many, many thanks for the hospitality, Ross:thmbsp: Jeff Bauhausler 07-20-2008, 08:27 AM Yep, many thanks Ross. Huge group of attendees. Was this the biggest ever? Many, many thanks for the hospitality, Ross:thmbsp: Jeff Jeff; I'm really glad everyone had a good time. We've lived here for 8 years and that's the first time that more than 6 guests have been here at one time. It was so much fun I wish we had done it before, and we will do it again. The food was a compromise with my wife. She heard there would be 'as many as 40' people coming and practically demanded that I roast a hog, ice down a keg of beer, truck in watermelons, etc. I talked her down to cold foods only. In her family, if they like you they feed you. And feed you and feed you... I'm looking forward to the next meet to resume a dozen half finished conversations. Cheers Ross grumpy 07-20-2008, 08:30 AM Had a great time. Hope to see everyone at the next one. Strawman 07-20-2008, 09:19 AM Thanks for the hospitality, and it was great to meet you Ross! The Accuphase setup was amazing. It was cool to hear the AK tube joint effort too. I had a great time meeting new folks and talking to old pals. Steve PakProtector 07-20-2008, 12:34 PM In her family, if they like you they feed you. And feed you and feed you... errr...Ross, I notice you're pretty skinny... cheers, Douglas dnewma04 07-20-2008, 12:40 PM I bet Ross has some pockets full of mutton whenever he visits her family. Bauhausler 07-20-2008, 08:24 PM Actually I just this minute got back from her mom's house. Pints of ice cream were handed around while we watched TV. If I was around them very much I'd need to take up jogging or wear much bigger clothes! zoeinterloper 07-20-2008, 08:53 PM Wow Ross, What a treat, lots of great gear to look at and listen to, great conversation. We were all well taken care of, thank you! It was great to see everyone and the day and the hours just slipped away. Good times are like that. Only one regret, I should have brought more vinyl, Tom Waits, etc... Happy (ist) Listening! :beatnik: slow_jazz 07-21-2008, 10:12 AM Missed another one had to go to the Ann Arbor Art Fair instead. Sounds like everyone had a great time... jn229 07-21-2008, 08:33 PM Ross, your home is an audio nut’s paradise. Thanks for the cold cuts, cold beer and warm hospitality. :D Jim perchdog 07-21-2008, 09:20 PM hello a.k. what to say, i have been surfing site for past 8 months or so and post rarely.. these past few weeks i have been learning what a.k. is all about. i thought it was a kicking place to get audio info and so forth but had no idea it was started locally. i ended up at the smac meeting by chance, what can i say. ross's house is quite the audio / man cave, never would i have thought he would have such an understanding significant other. i usually do not do that well in crowds and no body real knew me from adam but made me feel at home never the less. thanks guys david p.s. i am starting altec project, much information picked up during my short visit:scratch2: Bauhausler 07-21-2008, 11:00 PM Well I'm glad for the attendance of all members, new and old. if someone was inspired to start a project or investigate a new interest, that's what it's all about. Too late I figured out what was wrong with the B&O turntable on Saturday. The linear arm drive mechanism had lost a set screw. I opened it up today to change the belts and found the problem. I hope this repair will hold it for another 32 years. djnagle 07-22-2008, 07:56 PM Hey Perch, what Altec project are you working on? I built up a bunch of Altec speakers. If you have any questions, give me a PM. Cheers. Squidward 07-23-2008, 10:55 AM Hey perchdog! I remember talking to you! Nice to meet you! Great meet, and nice to meet you Ross! I had a great time, and I would have stayed longer had I been able to. perchdog 07-23-2008, 10:26 PM hi squidward... it was nice meeting you and all the other ak ers... maybe next time i will be able to drag my cousin and partner in crime along. like i said, i'm just strating to realize what ak is all about...i have to say pretty cool.. slow_jazz 07-23-2008, 11:52 PM Any pictures?? Anyone??? Kegger 07-24-2008, 12:37 AM Yep Ross has a house that reminds me of a few around here! He put on a spread that was worthy of kings, or was it just for me! Regardless thank you Ross! Excellent meet/host/setup/day oh yah and the beer was cold, very nice! Strawman 07-24-2008, 08:22 AM Any pictures?? Anyone??? Mark put a bunch up in post #15. Bauhausler 07-24-2008, 09:55 AM It was great having people over for a number of reasons: 1) some 'cleaning' got done - well, at least the disorder got shoved farther back for a while. 2) people I've been trying to get to meet each other finally did and there's no stopping them now. 3) I got to hear the Altec Boleros with single ended and it worked fine. 4) Met more people in one day that I would in 6 months. 5) potato salad 6) excuse to drink beer before sundown 7) Got to hear the Acoustats again for an extended period. I still have the Acoustats set up although I've switched to a different amp that's a little 'softer' in the treble than the Krell. My instincts tell me there should be so much wrong with a speaker 8 feet high and 3 inches thick but I really like the sound of these. Maybe the 'negatives' of back wave reflection, insensitivity and challenging impedance aren't as bad as I thought. I certainly have no need to switch to a different speaker right away. The mids and treble on these are really clean and pleasant. dnewma04 07-24-2008, 10:12 AM Ross, I agree about the acoustats, they sounded very good. Bass was surprising, frankly. One suggestion you may want to try out is to get some 3" or so PVC tubing and cover it with something somewhat sound absorbant, open cell foam, acoustuff, or whatever you have laying around the house. Place them semi close to the back of the acoustats to disperse the sound. Could help with placement limitations formed by that gigantic wall of glass you've got there. Bauhausler 07-24-2008, 10:47 AM Ross, I agree about the acoustats, they sounded very good. The Acoustats are challenging to drive at high levels in the bass (3 Ohms). I didn't know how loud things were going to get here so I hedged my bets and ran them with separate subs and a high level crossover rolling them off at about 70hz. It would have been bad form to have someone turn up the volume and smoke the Krell amp. The big glass wall is the blessing and the curse of this room. I have had literally scores of speakers in here and the major limitation of the sound is the 240 square feet of reflective surface. You've never heard Bose 901s sound so huge before. My idea for 'treating' teh back wave of the Acoustats was to hang a long narrow section of heavy fabric or carpet arranged in a curved or irregular shape about a foot behind them. That would break up enough of the midrange rear radiation to keep the glass from spraying the image all over the room. I'm not obsessed with soundstage, but the way it is, the image positioning is just weird. Strawman 07-24-2008, 06:19 PM I hear that Ross, but it is a beautiful window into the oasis for wildlife that you have created. I'm sure you and the wife enjoy that as much as the gear. :thmbsp: |
