View Full Version : Running many speakers with one amp

Let's say I had four pairs of speakers that I wanted to run off of one amp.

A Sansui G-8000 only supports two pairs of speakers.

I realize adding the other two pair in parallel would bring down the resistance the amp sees to dangerous levels and is bad. I want to get something that allows me to do this though so I can control the sound from one amp as opposed to simply splitting the RCA output of the source to two amps.

After researching, it appears what I need is an "Impedance Matching Volume Control" along with a splitter. I see they are about $20-$30 online.

I also see things called autoformers but they look like they would require a box to go in and extra work, not to mention they are twice as expensive as the impedance matching volume controls.

What do you guys use? Is there an easy way to accomplish this?

Thanks!!

what impedances are we talking about?

I want to set up a "Wall of Sound" in my basement with a pair each Yamaha NS-1000M, Pioneer HPM-100, and two pair stacked Sansui SP-3500.

I know its blasphemy... I just want to see what it's like.

I think that means 8 ohms each speaker X 8 speakers.

One option is series- parallel which the amp would see 8 ohm load total with both A&B selected.Have no clue how it would sound..

Get a good Adcom speaker switch box, make sure it has a protection switch. Only problem is they seem to suck the life out of the sound if used in protection mode, but for wall-o-sound, they work great.

Your best bet is something like the Niles SVC speaker selectors, there's been a dozen threads on this type of thing lately...

Thanks for the suggestion but that Niles thing is like $399, far more than I can afford on a "what if..."

Personally ,I would run 2 power amps. In fact --I run three power amps-with a Yamaha C-4 control amp.
NS-1000's-- DIY MOSFET
NS-1000M's- DIY MOSFET
NS-690's----Yamaha M-4

So you say split the preamp output to two power amps? That I could do.

The Adcom gfs-6 looks like it might just do the trick. Cheap enough, too. Thanks for the heads up!

You can try multiple amps with sharing the same source via the tape out/aux in jacks. I have used this system to compare systems and to double up speakers.

Yes, if the amps have gain/level controls on them. If they don't there is no volume adjustment.
