View Full Version : KC's "The Music Exchange" inventory
cubby01 07-12-2008, 08:57 AM Yesterday saw a local news item saying one of the largest collections of vinyl records in the country is about to be sold in the Kansas City's West Bottoms over this weekend and next couple weeks.

There's a link within that news article to the liquidators site giving more details.
Basically two years ago The Music Exchange in Kansas City went out of business due to owner passing away. This weekend the fixtures inventory, including racks, bins, etc, are being auctioned. And over the next two weeks (Wed-Sat of each week) the LP inventory (approx 250,000) will be sold (at $1/per).

Though my guess, the ebayers will be in-line early, then snagging everything in site to resell to us at 10-12 bucks

Hi, I'm a KC area resident and while I might be mistaken, I thought Acoustic Sounds bought those, hopefully I'm wrong as I'm not far away at all!
PS I'm Wrong again! Yeah!!!!

ampegdan 07-12-2008, 11:48 AM Might have to take Wednesday off. I'll bet it's gonna be ugly though.
May have to bring my the Short Bus and my own crates. First time I was ever in the Music Exchange was right before they closed the original location, and then Ron actually passed away in the new location. Mind-boggling amounts of platterage, it was weird to see that many records without the requisite Lawrence Welk, Roger Williams, and Streisand filler.
I wonder if the remaining records will be dumped on the local thrift store market.....
cubby01 07-12-2008, 10:15 PM Just curious if any other locals stopped by the auction today. I was there for a bit. Got there late. There were a few TTs and tape decks but I didn't see anything thrilling. But the memorabilia and advertising stuff was way cool. Didn't buy any myself but someone asked me if I'd give $7 for a 1948 Westinghouse AM/FM radio since he bought it by mistake. I said sure.
Can't wait to see what the LP collection looks like. Unfortunately I'll be out of town and probably won't have an opportunity until Saturday.
Splatter Pak 07-13-2008, 12:12 AM My daughter and I packed records for the move out of the original location on Broadway. One of my co-workers was in from the beginning, maybe a co-founder, and he spent entire weekends there, packing and carrying. It means a lot for a business to have a loyal customer base! We learned just how heavy [and brittle!] a box of 78's can be. I remember at one point, I was motoring down an aisle, and found a record on the floor, where it was sure to get stepped on - it was priced at $50...
I am sad at the passing of that once-great record store.

Rex Everything 07-13-2008, 12:19 AM So.....which one of you K.C. guys are taking request lists, Jay?
bohhey 07-13-2008, 11:30 AM Good thing that KC is on my way to the Lake of the Ozarks....
ampegdan 07-16-2008, 08:51 PM I stopped in there on the way home from work. Ok, ok, I left work a little early.
Anyway, this was the most godawful thing I've ever seen. I don't doubt that there are 250,000 records in there, the problem is that they're all in 13X16 boxes and are in absolutely no order, be it genre, alphabetical, whatever. You might find a buch of one artist together in a box, but guaranteed the other stuff in the box was going to bear no relation. One guy I was talking to was sure they paid someone to 'randomize' them. Horrific. It was pointless to actually look for anything; at one point I hollered out, "Anyone see any Stones?" and you'd have thought I'd farted in church...
Boxes along the tables, on the floor under the tables, more coming in all the time and being put...wherever. I still walked out with almost 30 discs but none were what I was actually looking for. Never did see any Beatles or Stones, but stumbled across solo albums by Ian McLagan, Nicky Hopkins, and Jack Bruce. I kept finding Traffic, Blind Faith, and Winwood albums so I filled in my blanks there. Even found a box set of Albert "Big Al" Schweitzer playing the organ. But I'm not going back. Really. That was nuts. Oh, and about 100 degrees in there.
