View Full Version : Hybrid vs all tubes
ScramMan2 07-14-2008, 01:00 PM I have a chance to buy an Audio Research D125 fairly inexpensively.
I am on the fence about hybrid amps in general, anyone care to give me an educated opinion on your experience?
If anyone has a D125 I'd like to know what you think of the sound, I saw some negative comments on a few searches I have done.
I see some Counterpoint amps out there too. Thoughts on them and the reliability of them? Rebuilds from Alta Vista are pretty steep. I have been through a restore on my Son of Ampzilla, and don't want to do it again. Very pricey.
240sx4u 07-14-2008, 01:17 PM I had a counterpoint SA-20(?) and really didn't like it at all. It probably needed a recap and fresh tubes but I would not have bought it again.
I would jump at the opportunity to try an Audio Research piece. I have always wanted one.

Satch 07-15-2008, 08:55 AM I can only share my experiences with an AR hybrid preamp, the LS-2. Now that's a fine piece of audio, which is likely to stay in my system for a long time. Paired with an Threshold S/300 it's dynamic, detailed and refined without being over the top.
If the hybrid poweramp is anything like this pre, it's highly recommended.
lorne 07-15-2008, 09:06 AM Interesting question and I for one will be watching for any other opinions. I'm still sitting on the fence in regards to the Japanese Elekit pre-amp. I've been experimenting with passive attenuators for awhile, so the final decision is on hold. But when the next big wave of enthusiasm for TT's and vinyl comes, I'll be heating up the question all over again. The little Elekit is a hybrid.
opt80 07-15-2008, 09:53 AM I have a Jolida 1301, love it!!!
ScramMan2 07-15-2008, 02:03 PM There are a few others hybrids out there:
Blue Circle BC-204
Moscode 600 (this one is a rollers delight, I have 2 spare quads of Russian 6922's I could use on it)
Butler Audio TDB 2250
Conrad Johnson Evolution 2000
Any others? I'm looking at an under 2K price used. I know the BC amp is a little higher, but they do make different models that are single tube hybrids.
ScramMan2 07-15-2008, 02:06 PM No D125 users here?
Thanks for the info on the AR LS Satch, sounds like a great system with the Threshold.
Satch 07-16-2008, 03:50 AM Thanks ScramMan2, I'm very pleased with the amps. Anyway, no reviews, but some specs and some good photo's can be found here (http://www.arcdb.ws/D125/D125.html).
lorne 07-16-2008, 05:23 AM Any others? I'm looking at an under 2K price used.Like how much under $2K would you like? How about $1600 under. OK, you need to heat up the soldering pencil or get an AK buddy to build it for you. I am forwarding for your consideration the Elekit TU-875. This a hybrid tube preamp that uses a AC/DC wall-wart converter. I can't as yet figure it out, but the arketing blurb says that the power supply for the tubes and the FET sections are separate. Semicondctors are used in the EQ section
You may be thinking that it has to be a wanker's nightmare at that price. Well, please read the 6 Moons review! This web publication has always seemed to be a pretty sober and honestly reflective source of comment — IMHO. There is some definite encouragement here.
In Japan, the price is more like $300, but by the time you factor in the post, the extra C note for the importation seems OK. If I was not digging so deep for lunch moey every week, I'd go and snag one these tomorrow. Instead I have this Dyna PAS dedicated phono EQ conversion hanging about that I started months ago.
Buy it — build it and let us know .... PLEASE!
Here are the current links — but one, which seems to have fused out.

I've been scoping out ARCDB for a while. Thats where I saw it was a behemoth. Thanks.

Not to be picky, but I was looking for hybrid amplifiers of about 90 to 100 w/ch or better (and can handle a 4 ohm load). Going to drive some Maggies. I already have an Anthem LS tube preamp with matched Amperex 6922's.

I worked on a couple Moscode 600 amps once, wish I could afford one for myself!!.

They seem to be nice enough, not sure of the build quality though. What do you think?
I have no hands on experience with them.
lorne 07-17-2008, 03:15 AM HEY ... my fault there ScramMan2. Somehow I got myself worked around to thinking you were searching out hybrid preamps. Sorry for wasting the bandwidth. — L.
