View Full Version : Marantz 510M, how many versions?
Bigears 07-20-2008, 11:52 AM The subject line pretty much sums it up, how many versions did Marantz make of this amp? I have a neighbor that has a Marantz separates stack which includes two 510M's, 150 tuna, and 3800 preamp. The 510's are two different versions. One has a plastic badge with script on the left side, while the other has the typical Marantz script in the middle, sorry about the poor images but these are in a bad spot.
jeff105 07-20-2008, 12:28 PM All I remember were the 510, 510M, 510MR, and 510r.
The 510r had it's badge toward the side instead of centered.
Bigears 07-20-2008, 01:00 PM Am I correct in assuming that the M stands for "meters"? What does the r stand for?
henrie 07-20-2008, 01:40 PM Here you see where the "R" stands for .....

jstang 07-20-2008, 01:42 PM R is Race version.... ( Rack ).
I don't know if the minor face plate difference counts as a revision....or version. I think there might be a -A and -B for the face plate, but doubt they rev the model number for something like that.
Look at the serial numbers on the back, my bet is the scripted version is a much lower number.
Also tell him needs to sell them to you, cause he is not taking care them correctly.....

Bigears 07-20-2008, 02:21 PM Excellent info, thanks. And yes, I need to get these out of her garage, they are getting beat from being moved. The idea is that I'd like to buy these from my neighbor, but I want to pay her a fair amount, but not overpay. One 510M is missing a knob and the newer unit serial number 1206, has all the speaker connections snapped off. This gear and many other pieces are what is left from her brother's estate, she claims he worked for Marantz at one time.
How hard is it to find the missing knob and the speaker terminals?
Thanks for all the info guys.
jstang 07-20-2008, 03:47 PM Really...a Marantz employee in SoCal..... Look around, see if you see any parts bins....this is a critical mission, you must not fail!
The 510 ( as well as the 500 ) has a standard dual banana plug terminal post that can be found at Radio Shack or PartsExpress.

Bigears 07-21-2008, 12:05 AM Thanks for the pic schwarcw. One of the 510M's looks like yours. At this point, I need to figure out what to offer for these. I ran them both up on my dim bulb and got output out of each of them. I'm not sure what these are worth and don't want this thread moved, so please PM if you have any thougths on value.
jstang, I went through boxes of junk in the garage and nothing Marantz but a 2325 full line brochure and a set of 4 feet. I did run accross some other non-Marantz vintage gear, but the separates have my interest at the moment.
I'll keep the tread updated.

I concur. You'll also see the matching 125 and 150 tuners with similar faceplate variation.
jstang 07-21-2008, 07:31 AM Darn.... :) ..... But two 510M is a very good thing....... However your neighbor may have second thoughts once you turn on the two 510s....then start blasting them out and dimming the lights....
Rock on ....

Arkay 07-21-2008, 07:55 AM Those are REALLY NICE amps to get, even with a missing knob or two (replaceable) and speaker terminals (worst case, upgrade with some modern ones!). I wouldn't wait too long to get these... in case someone else she knows gets wind of them and grabs 'em, first. You'd have a difficult time forgiving yourself, if that happened. Looking forward to hearing good news from you, soon.
