I picked up a mittful of those $5.00 vouchers for HippieFest 2008 out at DTE August 2 today at Street Corner Music. The lineup is pretty interesting, so for $5.00 it could be a cool way to spend a summer evening. Performers include Eric Burdon and the Animals, Jack Bruce, Melanie, Badfinger and a guy from the Hollies. From reading the Message Board on the link below, it could be a pretty decent show. Jack Bruce, Eric Burdon, and Melanie all are getting very good reviews.

Andy, is it a coupon for $5.00 off of a pavilion seat, or $5.00 admission for the lawn? I need a seat under my ass.

C'mon ya wuss, it's a HippieFest. Dance in the mud with flowers in your hair:D

Just kidding. It's for a $5.00 admission to the lawn, but you can upgrade to pavilion for $25.50.

When Grumpy, Luvinvinyl and I saw BB King a few years back we rented those low beach chairs for $5.00 and camped out.
Not too bad with all the big screens these days.

Lawn GA isn't a bad thing unless it's packed and/or sold out. Then you'll get trampled on those low seats, and you won't get your deposit back if the seat is damaged. Trust me, I work for Live Nation at Alpine Valley.

The concert business is down like everything else thanks to the economy.

I saw Jack Bruce with Ringo Starr's All Star band several years ago and he stole the show.... This should be very good....

Right on cue. :D Yeah, I’ve known about this for a while now, but until Dan chimed in, I had no one to go with, so I was going to pass. I saw Joey and his version of Badfinger in Minnesota a few years ago, and he rocked the joint. They’re certainly not the same band without Pete, Mike, and Tom, but they’re still capable of putting on a great show. I’m pretty stoked!

There, have I done my duty now?

Went to the show last night, and thought I’d post a brief recap. The weather was as nice as could’ve possibly been hoped for, and we had a terrific time.

First up was Terry Sylvester, formerly of the Hollies, who sang a few golden oldies like “Carrie Anne” and “Long Cool Woman.” The band sounded pretty good, and the harmonies, for which the Hollies were primarily known, were pretty decent.

Then came Badfinger, led by Joey Molland, who emceed the event and is the only surviving member of the group. Though the set was disappointingly short—only four songs—the band sounded tight and Joey was in fine voice, delivering versions of “Come and Get It,” “Baby Blue,” “Day after Day,” and “No Matter What” with verve and gusto. I particularly liked the slide work on “Day after Day.” I’m of course biased, being a diehard fan, but I thought the set was terrific, if too short.

Up next was folk troubadour Melanie, who was accompanied by her son. She sang OK—her voice is noticeably rougher than in her salad days—and it was a decently enjoyable set. After Badfinger’s punchy power pop, though, Melanie’s hippy sentiments, though appropriate for an event called Hippiefest, seemed a bit of a comedown.

Then the show caught fire again. Cream’s Jack Bruce strolled on and proceeded to tear the place down with a long, fiery set that included Cream classics like “Sunshine of Your Love,” “White Room,” and “Sittin’ on Top of the World.” Bruce’s voice surprised me. It was definitely a lot stronger than it was during the Cream reunion shows, and he sang with a lot of passion and conviction. And the guitarist (forget his name) pulled off some great licks.

At that point, I figured the show closer, Eric Burdon and the Animals, would have a damn near impossible act to follow. But they rose to the occasion in a BIG way, delivering a set whose fire IMO outdid even Bruce. Burdon sang with a youthful enthusiasm—but the big surprise was his band, who were really tight and put a few new spins on the old arrangements. By the time they closed with encores of “Paint It Black” and “Boom Boom,” the audience was whooping and hollering. Overall, a VERY impressive showing by a guy and a band I thought were long irrelevant, even on stage.

Anyway, I thought the show was great, and for under $10 a ticket for lawn seats (though we got hammered by Ticketmaster’s stupid surcharges) it delivered a lot of great music.
