View Full Version : First impression of the linn
grumpy 09-20-2002, 07:37 PM DAMN !!!!!!
I have been missing so much music for all these years ! Dont get me wrong I love my Thorens but its no contest. After a quick going over with the tracking force gauge and an in the ballpart
alignment I was astounded. I cracked one of my sealed LP's which happend to be a Thelma Houston on the Shefield label. I droped the stylus and was greeted by the deadest intro into of an album I have ever heard. My kid walked into the room and asked wht CD I was playing. I told him Nope its an LP. So he stood with this look of shock on his face. After one side of the LP I think he know understands my passion for vinyl.....I didnt think that would ever happen ! He wants me to crack open some still sealed Limp Bizkit now. All this was with the Linn K9 Cart. I have read so much bad shit about this cart.....Its BS ! My ears aint what they used to be. Ha I have known it would sound this good I would not have sprung for the Benz. Well More later when i can play and listen some more.
Grumpy (whos very freaking happy ! )
car67 09-20-2002, 08:49 PM Congrats Grumps! You gotta be really happy with that. I saw the pix in the other thread and that baby looks pristine. Very fitting occassion for the Thelma. :beerchug:
This is going with the Musical Fidelity and Linn Index? Give the Benz a go, that's a MC whereas IIRC the K9 is a MM so you can compare types.
cheers

Tonto Yoder 09-20-2002, 08:58 PM Grumpy,
You DO realize that Sheffield Labs was famous for its sonic qualities???
If I had a $1 for every time I heard Thelma Houston at the local audio store (Audio Warehouse in Akron, Ohio)...........

Billfort 09-20-2002, 09:12 PM Enjoy Grump! Never heard the basik but have spent many a night enjoying music on a friend's Linn LP12/Ittok. Even with a low dollar Grado cart that thing has a way of weaving music in the room that is pretty amazing. Maybe it's the Scot origin but it always seams to go particularly well with single malt Scotch - 18 year old McCallan & good vinyl - a little heaven on earth.

Yes I am well aware of the Sonic qualities of Shefield, MF and all the other "Oddifool" LP's. While other shefields sounded great on my Thorens they never sounded like this. If my Technics would have sounded this good to me I would never have taken it out of my system. I care not what brand of this or not I listen to as long as it sounds good to me. Also its makes no difference to me whether its a MC or MM. Take my Tandbergs for instance I had PunkerX over to shoot the chit and I could tell he thought my monitors were sub par. I think much higher of them then he. Its just one of those thimngs thats a personal preference.

Tonto Yoder 09-20-2002, 11:15 PM Grumpy,
sorry if the earlier post might have come off as condescending. Just meant that since the direct to disc Sheffield is SUCH a sonic spectacular, it might give an impression of gear that might not hold up with a wider range of vinyl.

No surprise... the Thorens (I assume a TD-160 or similar?) is 20 years older, the default tonearm is basically "high end 1970's consumer" (not 'audiophile') and the Linn is substantially more expensive too.
That said, my guess is there's less difference between the Linn and the Thorens than there would be between the Thorens and an el-cheapo $100 Sony PS-LX250H... am I right? :D
P.S... congrats and enjoy!!! I rarely get envious, just feel good for people's good fortune. Enjoy the music!

And I thank you for letting me hear some of your speakers. Personal preference is a biggy. I don't know what is was with the Tandbergs. I didn't get to really hear enough to say I dislike them. But first inpressions with Jimi were not well. Different amp or music the story may have been different.
Real nice score on the table, its a buit.
So what's next, a Tuner?
You playing it through the Fisher or did you pull out the MAC?

Pat S. 09-21-2002, 07:57 AM If anyone is interested, there are two of these tables on www.audiogon.com right now ($300 and $375 each).
BTW, the K9 is the #1 cartridge choice among dogs worldwide! :D
steamshooter 09-21-2002, 08:18 AM Isn't it great?! Now you have a new album collection.:yippy: Which Technics are you refering to? I'm excited right along with you. It should get better when you get it dialed in. Now lock yourself up with the Linn, and play some music for me! :D Brad
melofelo 08-01-2007, 09:28 PM interesting article on the relatively difficult to find k-9 here: :scratch2:

sometimes a very good deck can work wonders with a good budget cartridge...always seemed more logical to me to invest in the best deck you can afford and run a budget cartridge to its full potential than the other way round..cheaper in the long run
Scorpion8 08-01-2007, 09:29 PM Congrats. Always wanted a Linn myself.
