View Full Version : Econo Waveguide buy djnagle 08-01-2008, 03:01 PM Hi All, I am getting ready to buy a pair of the JBL Econo Waveguide talked about in the Econo Waveguide thread in the speaker forum. Let me know if you want a pair of these and I will include them in my order. Cheers. Andyman 08-01-2008, 03:35 PM I'm in for a pair djnagle 08-01-2008, 03:55 PM Cool Andy. I am going to give it a couple days to see if anyone else is interested. Cheers. shrinkboy 08-01-2008, 04:00 PM me too-- thery're cheapo, right? Kegger 08-01-2008, 05:18 PM I'm in for a pair of the horn lenses. (Hard to beat $20 for a pair) Which ones were you thinking of? For some reason the new ones they found with the metal threads look a bit better to me I think. Dennis I'm not sure what cabs or bass drivers I'd use at the moment, definatly have a few choices. ------------- At the moment I'm digging a set of 8" full rangers I just wiped together with some cool cabs from Andy! :thmbsp: djnagle 08-01-2008, 06:21 PM Keg, that looks like a great cab. I can't tell the size from the pic, but it looks good. I assume you would put the EWG on top? oooppps, I just read the rest of your post...what driver is in that cab? I like the Pyle lenz a bit better, they look beefyer. djnagle 08-01-2008, 06:23 PM Hey Shrinkboy, I see that you are from Texas. Are you still there or here in Michigan? If you are in Texas, it would be cheaper to buy them yourself. Let me know. Cheers. Gibsonian 08-01-2008, 07:59 PM How low can the econowaves be crossed? Kegger 08-01-2008, 08:03 PM I believe 900hz was an exteme low, and that 1k on up was the "preferred" setup. Read the thread in the speaker forum THE BIG ONE, titled like ak collabritive I think. Kegger 08-01-2008, 08:04 PM Hey Dennis the drivers in those fullrangers are some MTX 8" whizzer cones, I'm enjoying these things way better then I should be! I mean there rockin! EDIT: It looks like actually there not really MTX, as there Oaktron, which was bought by MTX. (guess there NOS) I've had these things for 2 years (so the shipping box says) :) forgot I had them until moving some stuff one day. djnagle 08-01-2008, 08:10 PM They look great....I've had good luck with single driver systems. I have tri-amped my Jensen Imperials. I would like to get the 150 amp back here and switch it from tweet to mid to bass and see where it really shines. Cheers. Kegger 08-02-2008, 02:44 AM Yep we can surely get the amp back over there Dennis, as of now it's playing very nicely on the full rangers. :music: Andyman 08-12-2008, 04:38 AM Bump. Where do we stand with this? Everybody in?? shrinkboy 08-12-2008, 09:40 AM yo soy en el tejas, nagle. understood about shipping-- take me outta the list djnagle 08-12-2008, 10:45 AM Hey Andyman, I was letting it sit for a bit to see if anyone else wanted to get in on it. Right now we have three of us. I wonder if this would be a good thing to send to all SMAC email list? What do you think? Cheers. Squidward 08-12-2008, 10:54 AM You guys are killing me. I need to downsize, have too many projects already, but this looks pretty cool. Let me think on it for another day. Sending this to the SMAC list would probably be a great idea, too! I second the motion! Andyman 08-12-2008, 05:56 PM I hear you Squid, but after reading up on these threads about my Valencias, it seems it's one of a dozen roads I could take. I'm telling ya, these Valencias are a slippery slope.... Maybe the Altec guys like Punker and DGWojo would be interested... djnagle 08-13-2008, 12:46 PM I just tried to send this to the SMAC email list and my server won't let it go through because there are too many addressees. Oh well. Cheers. jmathers 08-13-2008, 02:17 PM I just tried to send this to the SMAC email list and my server won't let it go through because there are too many addressees. Oh well. Cheers. Sent you a pm. Jeff Andyman 08-13-2008, 02:20 PM Denny: I got one out; check your email. There was a problem with an address, so I pulled it and it resent fine. jmathers 08-13-2008, 03:00 PM Thanks Andy:thmbsp: djnagle 08-13-2008, 03:38 PM Yep, thanks Andy. I will let this ride until this weekend and order Monday based on the results. I hope to have them at the SMAC meeting......should be do-able. Strawman 08-13-2008, 04:30 PM I didn't read that whole thread, what are they, the empty angled cabinets? Cosmos 08-13-2008, 05:17 PM I am in for a pair... Are we doing a group buy of the BMS drivers too? Did anyone shop those recently? Thanks Dan djnagle 08-13-2008, 05:29 PM Hi Strawman, no just the waveguide lenzes. Hi Cosmos, I already have drivers so I just need the lenzes. Cheers. Strawman 08-13-2008, 06:14 PM OK, thanks, looking forward to meeting you at Jeffs. :thmbsp: Punker X 08-14-2008, 07:11 AM Count me in for a pair. dnewma04 08-14-2008, 10:03 AM actually, scratch this. not interested at this time. :) Kegger 08-15-2008, 05:56 AM AWWHH C'mon Dave, $20, and your the one we need experimenting with these things! You can swing it can't yu? dnewma04 08-15-2008, 07:54 AM Bad timing, but I'll pick up some later. The waveguide I'd be more interested in is the 10" round waveguide at PE> :) Russellc 08-15-2008, 09:27 AM I believe 900hz was an exteme low, and that 1k on up was the "preferred" setup. Read the thread in the speaker forum THE BIG ONE, titled like ak collabritive I think. Actually, the woofer crossed over at 900 in one crossover, and 1200 in another. The high pass for the horn is around 2.5 or so. I have tried them at 800 and that was pushing it.( I also used JBL 2425H, the selenium isnt to happy that low) The cross over for the econowaveguide is asymetric, that is it isnt at 900 hz or whatever on both drivers. The mix of ( depending on which crossover, i.e. woofers over 95 db or under 95 db, and whether or not the woofer is one particular JBL model) 1200 on the woofer and 2.5 on the horn result in a flat response and actual crossover (once electrical and accoustical responses combine) appears to be around 1500 or so. Russellc Russellc 08-15-2008, 09:40 AM AWWHH C'mon Dave, $20, and your the one we need experimenting with these things! You can swing it can't yu? I agree. this is one inexpensive part, and the project's crossover and compensation is designed for this driver AND waveguide. It is quite a science to compensate a compression driver/waveguide, each different one requiring its own particular compensation. This one is all worked out, and is a peach to be sure. I'm glad to see this project spreading, Its an excellent opportunity for AK members to build a super performing speaker, and I do mean super, for very little dough. A through read of both econowave collaberative, as well as the insignia collaberative is a wonderful education on how crossover design can be done, how to impliment the 239 dollar Beringer RTA, and great info on compensation, particularly on compression drivers and waveguides. A great project, a kickass speaker, as well as a great education is here for all AK members. I'm glad to see this spread, now as a group buy, later more and more members will have the opportunity to hear this project...then it will grow even further! Russellc dnewma04 08-15-2008, 09:47 AM The only thing that really keeps me from going that direction is just what you describe, I have nothing against kits established designs as a starting point for someone wanting to play around or get into speaker building. I still play around with such things, but most of the fun of speaker design for me is the design portion, not the building portion. That's why I like the PE waveguide. It actually measure more like a waveguide then the PT and is just about as inexpensive. If someone wanted to make a quasi gedlee summa clone, the PE will get you closer albeit not quite there. In any case, I don't doubt that the PT waveguide project will get you an awful lot of performance without spending too much money. It's just not for me at this point. Kegger 08-15-2008, 04:16 PM So your saying you've tried 800hz and it's pushing it, so 900hz would be a realistic cutoff point for the waveguide? Actually, the woofer crossed over at 900 in one crossover, and 1200 in another. The high pass for the horn is around 2.5 or so. I have tried them at 800 and that was pushing it.( I also used JBL 2425H, the selenium isnt to happy that low) The cross over for the econowaveguide is asymetric, that is it isnt at 900 hz or whatever on both drivers. Russellc Kegger 08-15-2008, 04:18 PM So have you used this other PE waveguide Dave? dnewma04 08-15-2008, 04:40 PM I have heard it adapted for use with a dome tweeter and have seen measurements posted on one of the audio sites. Looks and sounds promising. :) Kegger 08-15-2008, 04:47 PM Sounds interesting. Strawman 08-15-2008, 08:38 PM Is there an emoticon for "shit that goes over my head"? Nevermind, I would probably wear it out. :D Russellc 08-15-2008, 10:57 PM So your saying you've tried 800hz and it's pushing it, so 900hz would be a realistic cutoff point for the waveguide? For the wave guide yes....I just dont know how the selenium driver from econowave would like it. Again, when I did it I screwed on the JBL 2425H on top of an A7 of all things. I'm sure the waveguide itself, while functioning at 800hz, would likely prefer the higher point required by econowave. I dont have an RTA yet to check the response, unfortunately. Russellc djnagle 08-16-2008, 10:07 AM OK, I talked to JBL yesterday and they have 7 in stock but their computer says they will have more by first of next week. I will order them this week. Cheers. Kegger 08-16-2008, 04:09 PM Dennis, I thought you were thinking of getting the Pyle lenzes, the one with the metal threads? Kegger 08-16-2008, 04:12 PM Alright that's what I was getting at, the waveguide it'self, as I thought 900hz would be the low side. Yep sounds good, Keg For the wave guide yes....I just dont know how the selenium driver from econowave would like it. Again, when I did it I screwed on the JBL 2425H on top of an A7 of all things. I'm sure the waveguide itself, while functioning at 800hz, would likely prefer the higher point required by econowave. I dont have an RTA yet to check the response, unfortunately. Russellc Russellc 08-17-2008, 10:59 AM Alright that's what I was getting at, the waveguide it'self, as I thought 900hz would be the low side. Yep sounds good, Keg I'm just starting to get it a little, as you move down below what the waveguide is designed for, you may get dispersion problems where the wave guide just isnt "working" yet. Zilch, Jackgiff or Skywave rider could better answer this. In my case I had just gotten the wave guides and couldnt believe they could keep up with my 511Bs. They could, and did! Those experiments were with an Eminence 800 hz crossover with dayton caps installed, and compensation added on. I think there is a thread in the beginning of econowave where I am reporting the results and Zilch was telling me that that (800 hz) was as low as econowave should be pushed. Russellc djnagle 08-17-2008, 03:44 PM Yep, now that you say that Keg, that is what we were thinking. I will try to have them for the meeting. Cheers. djnagle 08-17-2008, 04:13 PM Order placed....no turning back now. They will be here for the SMAC party. $22.75 per pair. See you then. Kegger 08-18-2008, 06:47 PM Very Cool Dennis! I'll hook yu up with the cash at Jeff's. Thanks! djnagle 08-18-2008, 07:17 PM Hi Keg. I am looking forward to playing with these. I am going to flip my Imperials so the woof is on top and the subhorn unloads to the floor. I will put the new Ewave on top of the cabinet, along with the tweet. Hoping for a big improvement in sound. See you at Jeff's. Kegger 08-22-2008, 02:35 PM Dennis who all got the lenses? How many pairs? djnagle 08-22-2008, 03:49 PM I have 16 horns and will bring them to the meet tomorrow. Cheers. Kegger 08-22-2008, 05:34 PM Dennis, this I believe is the list of people who are getting the lenzes as you have 16. (8 pairs) Myself You AndyMan Ross Punker Cosmos Squid Wojeck Does that sound right? Thanks for getting these! djnagle 08-22-2008, 06:20 PM Yep, that's it. Bauhausler 04-11-2009, 03:11 PM Bad timing, but I'll pick up some later. The waveguide I'd be more interested in is the 10" round waveguide at PE> :) I'm resurrecting this because I don't recall anyone posting listening impressions on the PE 8", 10" or 12" WGs. I have Dennis' 12" rounds here, running with the D220Tis. They don't seem to have the same dispersion characteristics as the PH612. Dave? Anybody? I like the idea of a round WG because I too have a pair of cabs with a 10" PR hole that a WG would neatly fit into. |
