I just picked this beauty on my way home at a local yardsale....Sherwood S-3000 FM tuner. She's a real beauty cosmetically, but what in the hell am I gonna do with it......:dunno: It looks to be a mono unit. Anyway, I just figured I'd share a couple of crappy pics with the group.

Thats a very nice little find you got there. I still have yet to try tubes but I sure do like the looks of some of the older tube gear.

Earlier S3000 with no provision for the outboard mpx or the acc'y inboard from what I can see. Is there a plate on the right rear of the chassis as you face from the back? Of so then there is an acc'y inboard mpx unit that Sherwood offered.
A number of members on another site are running mono Sherwood S3000s and prefer them over other stereo tuners finding that they sound better with a mono presentation than other tuners do with stereo. You have found a really good tuner that looks to be in fine condition. I had and used the stereo version for a number of years and liked the sound as much as my MR77 though in other respects it was not as competitive. I've since sold it but had the SS version, S3300 and working on a deal to acquire another.

To be honest I ain't much of a Tuna guy, but I couldn't pass on a unit in as nice of shape as this one.

The back ID tag reads S-3000 II. The only outputs are one output and one labeled as Multiplex.

I would have bought it, too, just because it's cool. Tune it to NPR or whatever station has news you like to hear, and use it for that :)

The ooutput labeled multiplex is for the outboard demultiplexer. These come up from time to time on eBay. If you want a challenge there was also an outboard stereo indicator from Sherwood. As the tuner does not have a provision nor does the demultiplexer. In years I've only seen 2 ever for sale. Be advised, Sherwood tube gear can be addictive. You may want to start looking for a pair of S1000 mono integrated amps or an S4000 (think that was the model) and the S260. The 4000 was an integrated mono amp with a stereo preamp so you could add the 260 for a stereo system. An interesting idea and they are almost as rare as the stereo indicator. I understand the 260 is a fantastic power amp. It was the only tube power amp made by Sherwood and they did not make a preamp as a separate tube component.

I'd happly store it for you if you don't have a place for it:D
Seriously, I set up an old Fisher mono tuner for my son on his stereo using a Y cord out of the mono output and he love it. Thinks it sounds great. And that was one of the lesser quality Fishers of the time.
Enjoy the music.

of your tuner. In fact, I'm listening to WPRB in Princeton, NJ with it right now. It is a fantastic sounding tuner - almost sounds like a CD on a good station, but with a smoother top end. Picked it up at an antiques store for next to nothing. I fixed the broken dial string, re-capped it with sonicaps (all the paper caps had drifted in values 10-40%), replaced the RCA jacks with gold-plated ones, bypassed the level control on the back, and added a 75ohm antenna input. Even without an alignment it sounds great and tunes in many stations. It should have an alignment, though.
I have all the parts to build the Bob Fitzgerald multiplex decoder and as soon as I get some time I will do it, but it sounds really great in mono right now!

one of my very faves. An S-2000 and an S-3000 alternate in the living room hifi. The latter's in slightly better shape; the former has AM. Nice, nice sounding tuners they be. Nice acquisition.

I think you mean S-360 EL84 monoblock.

Yep, that's the puppy. The brain matter still works but is forgetting details. The tuner is not clean, it looks almost like new. They are really hard to find with shiny chassis any more. You got more than a bargain - you got a beautiful find. I'm jealous.

That's sweet!! I picked up a Knight multiplex unit with stereo indicator on eBay for around $50.00. Mono is nice and quiet though!

Nice find  I love the Sherwood tube stuff. I have a S-2200 AM/FM tuner which I've had for years. It was originally made for simulcast stereo which is AM from one channel and FM from the other. It has separate tuning dials to accomplish this. It has the best sounding AM section I've ever heard...almost as nice as FM. It has the optional inboard MPX unit so it outputs FM stereo. I also have a S3MX and a SMX which are outboard MPX decoders which I use with early McIntosh mono tuners. You found a nice one in incredible condition...

nice find on the tuner.i've gott a few sherwoods kicking around here myself and as other have pointed out they're great bang for the buck as they generally dont sell for much.(except mabe the 3000v).

and if one ever does show up you know where and i find out about it everyone haul out the wallets and be prepared to pay if you want to outbid me:D that is another item on my list to get.

Very nice, I have a Sherwood tuner (for now), I think it's an S-2100 or S-2200 that has provisions for AM/FM simulcasting. Prety neat tuner.
