View Full Version : Share those "vintage" and "obscure" tunes...
similost 08-06-2008, 10:33 AM Thought I would try something a little different here.
Since you can now find all of those old videos and songs because of the wild wacky web, I thought it might be cool if we shared some of those old "vintage" "strange" and "obscure" old tunes we used to listen to and like, that weren't so main stream.
Here's one I just happened to remember I really liked..
Time Zone doing World Destruction.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPHDQLuZaGo&feature=related
Post some of your old flashbacks... I've got stacks of songs like this I like, and was hoping to see if we can all turn each other onto something really different..
Quint 08-06-2008, 11:03 AM Don't know if it has a YT clip attached, but I always loved the Iggy Pop song "Here Comes Success," off Lust for Life. I've never heard it on the radio, or anywhere else for that matter. Does that qualify as obsure? :D
shrinkboy 08-06-2008, 11:07 AM one of my faves-- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEnQ5njdDqQ&feature=related
the footage explains everything, regional hit gone national, summer, 1968
Quint 08-06-2008, 11:08 AM Wow, I actually did find some clips! One is Duran Duran covering the song. Shows great taste on their part. :thmbsp:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVNZ7r2ry48
The other is the studio version of the song.

similost 08-06-2008, 11:10 AM Yep.. that's obscure for sure... It's actually just called "success"

similost 08-06-2008, 11:11 AM Very Cool Shrinkboy.. this is the kind of stuff I was hoping others would post..
similost 08-06-2008, 11:13 AM Another great one Eddie... I think this thread will be a great way to find some of those really obscure bands and groups many of us have never heard of..

When i was a teenager, I called the local radio station at least 10 times one night requesting they play it. Finally the DJ was so irritated by my incessant calling he broke down and played it!

I recently bought this Picture album, with a note from General Boy basically saying do not copy and pirate our music please.. Side two has their headshots wearing nylons over their heads.

similost 08-06-2008, 11:55 AM Here's another of my favorites. I've got the 12" of this, and it's a spectacular recording and engineering job. Spartanmanor heard it and said it was definitally a great system test album...

shrinkboy 08-06-2008, 11:58 AM oh, gad, i just touched the rick astley for a second...or two and hadda shut her down. ouch! the Devo was a great touch, saw them in several club shows back then, one of my best live music memories.
similost 08-06-2008, 12:00 PM And yet one more.
I've got a very cool and impossible to find demo version of this..
You can tell I must have lived and worked in the night clubs during the 80's huh? ;)
Microchip League - New York

similost 08-06-2008, 12:02 PM That's cool too shrinkboy. I used to listen to Soft Machine years ago.. Had a few tapes I had made back in the late 70's. Wished I still had them..
I know that song Spok. Were they the first to do it? Never heard of them other wise..
don't know if they were the first but are the ones I recoginize. that clip is from '64
Brian 08-06-2008, 12:11 PM Do not know about the old and obscure tunes but I listen to AM1620 WNAR through the internet. It broadcasts old radio programs and Christian content. The station ran a series from Burn and Allen where Gracy was running for President of the U.S. Really interesting to hear of the thoughts, prejudices and thoughts about the distaff side back then and compare it to what happened with the first potential candidate. I did not hear every episode, sadly.

My bad. I had that damn chorus in my head and couldn't get it out, and that's what I was thinking of. Of course it's called "Success." Listened to that album a hundred times! :scratch2:
similost 08-06-2008, 12:47 PM I've heard that Kinks song, and the Josie song.. hhhmm.. amazed at some of the stuff I've heard and didn't realize who it was..
FredC 08-06-2008, 01:23 PM This is an absolute MUST HEAR..
Ozzy Osbourne and Frank Zappa covering the Bee Gee's "Stayin' Alive"

You're right.. its Dweezil Zappa and Ozzy Osbourne. The Ozzy version was the original recording for Dweezil's album "Confessions". Ozzy's record company wouldn't allow it so the vocals had to be replaced before release, which is what you hear on the youtube video.
The new vocalist was....
Are you ready?
...Donny Osmond
now THATS obscure!
similost 08-06-2008, 04:05 PM Some very interesting stuff Pstraums.. nice and mellow..
similost 08-06-2008, 04:08 PM That's wild.. I had just stumbled on that Mysterians video a few days ago and was watching it..

This is just 2 show you that we can record more than (very) BLACK metal :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xZwHKLYduA&feature=related
And to finish, I need to give you the chance to hear REAL great "BLACK" metal :) ... give this link a chance : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMg80LiH_kY (close your eyes and open your ears... It took me ten years practice to appreciate this... (so I respect it if you HATE it after the first "click")
I hate the way they look, but, it is REALLY creative and advanced kinda music... try to follow it, if you have ANY idea how to play an instrument :)
(no, they are NOT antichr...(u know what I mean) ... but they ARE great musicians, if U want to give them 4 minutes of your time :) (he`s NOT a great singer, compared to .... pavarotti?, but he`s singing just like he's expected 2 in this genre) (in this genre he`s .. the #¤&¤% BEST)
simply :)

similost 08-06-2008, 06:14 PM The Dimmu. I really like the music, but that's what I call puke vocals.. sounds more like the guy is trying to puke.. I wished bands like this would find a real singer... anyone can growl.. I don't understand why bands like this don't try and find vocal talent to go with their musical talent...

doucanoe 08-06-2008, 10:35 PM Here’s an obscure LP and the even more obscure group The Tingling Mothers Circus from Psychedelic 1968. The LP is titled The Circus Of The Mind and is relatively rare I believe. Noted on the linked website, Featuring sessions guitarist Elliot Randall AKA “ Twangy Tingler”, who was also known for his solo guitar work on Steely Dan’s Reelin’ In The Years.
I have an unopened copy of this LP so I couldn’t tell you much about it. My only exposure to The Tingling Mothers Circus has been from YouTube vids and bits and pieces off the Internets.
Here is a link to a little something about them.
