So I'm at my local thrifty store and I found this NIKKO STA 4030 Stereo receiver for $9.99. I've never heard of NIKKO before but I took a look at the rear of the thing and it is a product of Tokyo Japan. It also had a lot of connections in the back for an old receiver.
Here are some pics! Its dirty but I haven't cleaned it yet...

So does anyone know if these are any good?? I figured for $9.99 it can't be that bad so I picked it up not knowing if it was crap or not.
Thanks guys!

Jake, do a search of the forums for "Nikko." There's tons of discussion on the brand.

The Nikko stuff is pretty nice!
I have a newer 20wpc Nikko 5055 receiver that I purchased at a yard sale for $10.
I'm using mine in a work room, connected to a pair of recapped and refoamed Boston
Acoustics A40 speakers.....good sounding system IMO.
Please let us know how you like yours!

I use a black face STA 8010 (http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=63193&d=1190948572) in the bedroom driving a small passive sub and two RS speakers.
The only thing it needed was a new transistor in the preamp section (noisy channel) and switch/control cleanup, FM is slightly "drifty" but I live with it (Need schematic to TS the AFC if it has one).

OMG My jaw has dropped!!! I just hooked it up today and this thing sounds like 100x better than my Sansui AU-101 and 10x better than my Marantz 2216b. WOW! Even the FM radio sounds ridiculous!

I have an STA-7070 for main system. I have to get around to recapping one day. Really nice sounding 45 wpc, fantastic tuner and look purty too. Big nikko fan here

I have a garage sale STA 8010 as well but it looks nothing like the pic above. It's at my other place or I'd take a pic and post it. Mine looks more like a McIntosh with the divided front panel with Champagne color on the bottom. Nice little receiver from a brand I know little about.

Nice score. I had a (I think) 3055 model back when they were current. Then I had an Alpha 220, Beta 20 and Gamma 20 until very recently.
My big score was picking up this NR719 with a Pioneer turntable for free yesterday :guitar: from a guy on Craigs List here in Boston. He wanted to get rid of it but thought it was too good to just throw away. My kinda' guy! I suspect that this is from the slightly pre BPC era but I still like it. Looks better in person but it doesn't have that "substantial" feel like the older gear. Build date of 4/79.

I had a NR719. Excellent phono section. I've been looking for a black faced STA 8010 or 6010 off and on.
But my favorite Nikko is the STA-501

Naw, you don't want it. Sound too good. You should send it to me to keep my other Nikko's company :)

I recently scored one of Nikko's big boys - the NR-1019. Close to 24" wide with the wooden side panels, and very tall. I have mine running a set of NHT Super Ones, and the receiver dwarfs them for scale!
I was very impressed with the tuner and preamp sections of the receiver, but not as much with the amp. Of course, the comparison was against a Yamaha M-4, so maybe it was a little unfair!
Anyway, it's a beautiful piece, lots of fun to play with, and it makes a great bedroom nightlight!

I finally found myself with a spare 2 minutes at my cabin with a camera where my STA-8010 is located. These pics reflect my rush to get a pic and leave. Almost too embarrassed to post them as a result of the obvious dust (which is not obvious in person). Please keep in mind the cabin is very dark and I was only there for a short time to rake leaves. I promise to dust next trip there.
Contrary to what I said in a previous post above, only the vertical side rails are champagne colored. I guess this is a "black faced" Nikko too. Knobs are different than those in the STA-8010 pics posted above.

I once owned a new Nikko Alpha 440 power amp. Very big, very heavy, very nice. Used it as a back-up amp in my mobile DJ business back in the early 80s
