Just wanted to share some ideas that have worked for me lately.

Packing foam: Every thrift store on the planet has old foam mattress pads you can buy for $1. They make great packing materials.

Old hard-sided luggage is perfect for an inner box if you can find one the right size. Usually you can buy one for $2-$5, cheaper than a new cardboard box!

Reinforce cardboard boxes by adding additional corner supports. Use glue instead of tape to build a custom box.

Massive amounts of styrofoam sheets, bubble wrap and thin foam sheeting can be found FREE at furniture stores, esp. ones that import a lot of stuff like Furniture Row which gets everything from China. They are often glad to divert it from the dumpster.

We really need a sticky thread of packing material ideas.
