Jeez, Mike. And to think I'd bothered other AKers with my Dual's tendency to spin backwards a couple of years ago... I worried for nothing!

Aw, jeez (said in the best Archie Bunker accent).......now why did you go and make me feel old? :nono:

I remember - as a kid, that is - when that issue of Mad came out on the newstand down at the Rexall Drug store but I'll let you in on a little secret: I _really_ wanted the Playboy issue in the next shelf up but couldn't reach it. :D

Anyone remember the back page fold-in section?

Cheers,

David

Priceless stuff! MAD was mandatory reading back then, much to learn from the those pages and from the sturdy gaze of Alfred E. Neuman. ...that hasn't changed. Thanks for sharing

Spy vs. Spy was always my favorite.

Thanks Broons. :thmbsp:

Like many,I also loved the warped sense of humour Mad was famous for.

What struck me upon examining the images was those things in Hi-Fi which are timeless.
Pissed-off neighbours.Concerns about the prices.Sarcastic references to 'catchy sales gimmicks' like "shock-proof,waterproof anti-magnetic,self winding,sanforized,cork-tipped,micronite filtered.........Amplifier"
Rewiring the house.Concerns about the powergrid.

The more things change....the more they stay the same.

And..."No true Hi Fi fan cares about the music. It's the sound that's important!"

How true.

Nice find. I had a pretty good collection of Mad that I got rid of recently, kind of wish I kept them but I never read them any way.

Toughest decison of my youth was: New "Mad" or new "Weird War Tales"? I generally went with WWT...something about Nazis battling zombies was just irresistable.

You know, in step 8 of the "Old Expensive Way", I don't think you would want your turntable installed in the loudspeaker. Something tells me that you would have significant feedback problems.

Having a toaster inline with the power for the amplifier is a time-tested way to limit inrush current and adding high-frequency extension, but the thing that scares me is the fact that they're using toast with tubes. My experience is that bagels are better with tubes, where as bread is best with solid-state. Multi-grain bread can be used with either, but is not as good as bagels for tubes.

I look forward to Ken Kessler's next article. :D
