View Full Version : Sweet reel to reel
Vintage TX 04-25-2004, 05:09 PM Been working on a Tascam 44 OB for a week and this is a good sounding 1/4 reel to reel machine.
Using 7-1/2 speed and DBX between no hiss or background noise at all.
Here is a picture:
Vintage TX 04-25-2004, 05:13 PM Another from the inside, very low hours on this Tascam.
Vintage TX 04-25-2004, 05:17 PM Built like a tank;)
God, I love old Teac/Tascam stuff!
Vintage TX 04-25-2004, 05:28 PM Has sync-function, return to zero function, 2 speed forward and rewind (spooling or fast) digital counter with minutes and seconds. cue function, 6 %pitch-control up or down, smoooth tapehandling. All 3 motors direct-drive.

Vintage TX 04-25-2004, 05:34 PM Me too Celt:)
Started last night on a Teac 40-4 that I bought a year ago, that has been sitting waiting for parts, but finally finished it.
They have something magic + the Teac smell:p: after a good warmup.

Vintage TX 04-25-2004, 05:43 PM Here are some more Teac's:
Teac A-3340 S on top of a Teac A-6010
Akai 1710 W on top of a Tascam 42 NB the 2-track model also built like a tank.
stereofisher 04-25-2004, 07:34 PM Thats quite a collection of decks you have there. Wish you lived around here. Last year I had a 4300 that would not record. Did not have time and sold it. Sold a minty 2300. Went to a good home on Long Island. Bought a 7010 reel to reel. Need to adjust the brakes on it. Will not sell it. Its so big it would be very hard to pack it. As it was, the cabinet was slightly damaged in shipping. Any help on how to fix its brakes?
Just got done working on a TEAC 450 and a 460 cassette deck. You are right. TEAC's and Tascams are very special. I always liked them. Got the bug a few years ago and bought 4 reel to reels and 3 cassette decks. Now have the 2 cassette decks and a 450 parts unit. They are really easy to replace belts on. Seven screws and the bottom plate comes off. Two more screws and the capstan and flywheel comes out and you can get at all the belts. For a cassette they sound really good. Even though I have a CDR for the car I started making cassettes again. :D I hate the way a CDR sits there and thinks about whether it will record or not. All that copy guard crap! The 450 was $500 back in 1975! A lot of money then. My car was $800. I'd post pics but can't figure out how to get my camera on a lower setting to get this site to take my pic. Same with icons.
Have fun! Eric:D
Speaking of nice Teacs. Here's a Tascam #48 I repaired a few years ago. Eight tracks, 1/2" tape. Associated dbx units and a non-worthy mixer board.
Vintage TX 04-25-2004, 11:42 PM Hi Eric,
Thanks for your comment:)
Your 7010 is the bigger model with 10 inch's reels, and if I remember right the reel-motors are the same as 3340 models with solenoid-operated brakes mounted on each motor.
There is 2 adjustment screws, but check the brake-band first, it could be dirty and just need cleaning Eric.
Do you have a spring-scale ?
Does one or both reel-brakes engage at all or is both spilling tapes ?
Celt, that is a sweet Tascam, I have searched for one but have not got lucky finding a decent project yet.
What mixer is that a Mackie or ?
Vintage, I'd have to go back into 2002's repair log to find what the mixer board was. The only thing I remember about it was that it was a complete POS from the get-go. Not worthy of being in the same company of the Tascam let alone a Sony Walkman.
Vintage TX 04-26-2004, 01:26 AM Celt, that's funny:p:
Noticed one thing when combine mixers and add-on like dbx, Eq etc, best result is using Teac/Tascam products.
Just plug in and enjoy, no worries at all.
I dragged out my other mixer tonight to the shop M-30 and used it together with the 44 OB and 40-4.
Works great together, the board need some cleaning...
Vintage TX 04-26-2004, 01:30 AM Here is a old brochure from Teac:)

He is a real nice guy to deal with.
Vintage TX 05-04-2004, 02:26 AM Great you going to spin some reels again Pioneer:)
$ 100.00 is cheap.
Poor guy... women and electronics does not always match..
I have a female friend in SC that just got hooked on reel to reel after finding her Dad's old tapes.
Bought a Kenwood amp and wired up 8 speakers around the house to enjoy the music.

stereofisher 05-04-2004, 10:44 AM I really like the 2300 TEACS. Very very solid with great sound. Sounds like you got a good deal too!:D Missed it so much I bid on an older 1250, the 2300's predeccessor. Heh, another project. The diningroom table looks funny with nothing apart. Both TEAC cassette decks are hooked up now. Love those big VU'S. Just like my 7010!
Vintage, on my 7010, the brakes dont work on rewind, fast forward is fine. Everything else is fine. :D Its been cleaned and lubricated so other than that I am running it for now. Probably catch it on the next cleaning. Got a Pioneer QX-8000 that will most likely be the next project. Has an intermintant right front channel:mad: God I hate those problems. just got to take time and trace it out;) Good thing I like that model.
Would love to take a walk through your shop and look at your toys. Both of you. That 8 track Tascam is way cool. Funny you all mentioned the TEAC "smell":p:
Eric of Stone Ridge
Vintage TX 05-04-2004, 11:58 AM Pioneer:
Nice of the seller to record some good music for you;)
I have a deck like yours sitting waiting for a parts-donor...heads are worn down, reel-tables busted, missing knobs...
Eric:
Sorry to hear you still having problems with the brakes.
Was the brakeband OK or worn down ?
About the 38's, don't have those anymore... sold both last year to recording studios.
My recording room become a storage room instead, so decided to sell them, but kept the M-30 mixer.
One day I will get another 38 again.
Was transfer tapes the other day and used a 6010 + 3340 S at the same time. mmm, what a combined smell they had:p:
Other decks like Akai or Sony does not have the aroma like Teac.
Pioneer727 05-04-2004, 12:10 PM Hey Vintage there is a a-2300SX on Ebay right now same seller that I got mine from.
Item #:3094841639
Vintage TX 05-04-2004, 01:51 PM Thanks, will take a look:)
stereofisher 05-04-2004, 02:54 PM Beautiful day here in southern NY and I should go for a ride on the bicycle, but my TEAC 1250 arrived today and I could not resist taking a look under the hood.
Sadly the seller packed it poorly so the wood side panels were damaged but are repairable. Put them in clamps and cleaned the 1250 up. Had to rob cord off the 7010 and scronged up som e reel holders. Got out the Noxon polish and cleaned her up. Cleaned up a very dirty but good pinch roller and idler. Cleaned the heads and they are in good condition. :D I know how to lub a TEAC and could not wait to try it. From what the seller said it has sat for over 10 years. Good old TEAC:D Fast forward and rewind. The pinch roller would not engage. Saw this problem on a 2300 and oiled the arm that engages the roller. Success!:D It plays and the speed is right on. Have not tried the record yet. The face polished up nice. Missed my 2300 so I got this one. I am off to the hardware store to try and rig up a power cord and get some RCA cords. I am out of them.
Vintage, I will get around to fixing the brakes on the 7010. The brakes on the 1250 are good. Once you get past the damaged wood side panels and the grundge, this 1250 is a nice deck! All for 37.99 off the 'Bay with freight:D
Eric
Vintage TX 05-12-2004, 04:03 AM Sad when they pack bad like that, but you seem to be a handy man and fixed everything smooth:)
You know I was looking thru my brochures here thought I had one for 1250 but no luck..
Found A-7030 U. A-4010 SU, A-4000S, A-4010 S, A-2050, A-2300,
A-1500 W, A-1200.
But I found something for your 7010 that is rare, brand new RC-602 Repeat Play unit that you plug in where the remote connection is. 3 ft long cable and original box. Never used.
Came from a Teac dealer that went belly up long time ago.
Do you have that for your 7010 ?
Vintage TX 05-12-2004, 05:32 PM Finished this one that I bought a year ago and never had time until now.
Similar to Teac 3440 but newer model. Heavy:D
Vintage TX 05-12-2004, 05:36 PM Here is another one with Tascam M-30 connected.
Vintage TX 05-12-2004, 05:40 PM Sweet analog with some big boys:)
Tascam 44 OB, Mixer M-30, Teac 40-4, Tascam 42, NB.
Vintage TX 05-12-2004, 05:51 PM These are 2-track machines and mostly used in broadcasting or studio use.
Same features as 44-OB but only one side of the tape can be used on 42 NB.
Speed 7-1/2 + 15. The best sounding 2-track machine I ever heard and personal favorite when it comes to the bigger decks.:)
Just sold both to a gentleman in Colorado.
He has a project with transfer 5000 tapes to digital , so these 2 will be used alot in the feature.
madpioneer 05-12-2004, 05:52 PM Vintage TX you have got to be the foremost conasuer of reels dude!
You got some very nice units!
You wouldn't happen to have a left VU meter for a PIONEER RT-701/707 would ya?
THANX!
Vintage TX 05-12-2004, 05:57 PM Thank you Mad Mark:)
I noticed your post about the VU-meters but don't have any left.sorry..
