Vinyl is now apparently national news!

CBS Nightly News is putting together a piece about vinyl, and they are interviewing me for it tomorrow!

I kid you not.

More details to come when I get interviewed tomorrow.

Just thought I'd share that!:banana::banana:

I got a FaceBook message from one of the producers of the show, and he said that he'd like me to be a part of the show. Of course, i said yes, and he'll be here at noon tomorrow.

BTW, the piece is about vinyl and teens/college guys  ....and it's about the sound......

yeah. what he said.

I would go with the "mp3 and CD sounds like a**" angle due to compression and loudness wars.

Lol, what about me, I have two TTs one upstairs one downstairs and over 1000 albums to play on them. And here I am only 18 years old. I have also got my one friend into vinyl (although he wanted to get into it, just sisn;t have the means), and now another person that is a friend of both of us want to get into it after hearing the system I set up for my friend.

Also, what time will it be on, I might try to catch it.

Well congrats VinylDavid!!! and give the world your honest humble opinion.

I also have seen the younger generation start to gravitate towards vinyl and have sold some stereo systems (vintage receiver/TT/speakers) to the twenty something crowd in the last month or so. I truly believe that it's way more than just THE "music" but more of a holistic attitude of being "involved" with the medium and not just pushing a button and out comes music. My 15 yr old son has come to appreciate the analog medium since I have introduced it to him this summer and enjoys the "experience" that vinyl brings all the way from the album art to the handling/cleaning of vinyl to get the best sound out of it as possible. Plus you can buy some darn good music for a decent price when compared to iTunes.

David,

Since you'll be on national TV be sure to mention how badly many re-mastering have gotten, where they simply crank all the levels upwards for a loud but muddled sound...

It probably won’t do any good, but it can’t hurt, maybe they will take this a step further and expose the bloody imbeciles in the recording industry for the generally terrible technicians they are (Beyond the silliness in upper management).

By putting the speakers at the back of those "stands" you're creating a bunch of early reflections. You'll get better sound if you move them to the fronts so the carpet is eating up most of the first reflection.

What are early reflections?

They're reflections that follow close on the heels of the original sound from a driver. Having a hard surface close to the speakers like that means that you'll get the original sound and then very soon after you'll get a reflection from that hard surface. It will smear the sound in time somewhat. Getting rid of the early reflections can help sharpen the image, tighten up bass, and make the overall sound more accurate.

Nope....never was asked anything that would have allowed me to work that in.

I actually recommended iPods +vinyl transfers for portable and on-the-go listening situations. And a price increase is something that I do not want whatsoever.

And iPods do NOT suck (IMHO, of course), and I'll tell anyone that. They're the best out there that I have heard, for their intended purpose.

The guy never asked me about my system, and he asked where most of my vinyl came from....he did not want details, although I did attempt to go into them....he just wanted the simple answers.

I mentioned the MusicDirect gift cards, and said that they were gifts, and that I had a lot of luck and some great friends help me out with the system, but I doubt that that'll actually air.....

The piece is about vinyl, and the current teen boom, not about teen's audio systems.....if it had been.....I am sure that AK woulda been one of the first words out of my mouth.

Silly me. I should have known.

Wonder what the questions were. Find it kinda hard to believe AK could not have been mentioned somehow. Something like...

"Part of my system and some of this vinyl came as gifts from my buds at AudioKarma.org"

Oh well.
Count your blessings.

I think you need to have some appreciation for how these things are done. They have the thing largly written before they get there and just get the sound bites they need from him. He has very little input in the situation truth be told. I think maybe we could all just try to be happy for him and enjoy the story.

Ditto

They are reporting on David's love of vinyl. They are not reporting about David being in a car wreck, breaking into someone's house, being arrested for drug possession etc. It's a positive story - he's a nice kid - let's celebrate our
little brother's/son's/nephew's good fortune.

Nothing against you but not all of us see it as he's just letting people know his daily ventures, he's doing it so people think he's just so great. I personally am tired of reading about his publicity, he is not the voice of the future he's just another kid in society no better then any of us here!.

IMO it is inappropriate to do this kind of thing, I would not come on here bragging about a scholarship to UTI as other members may be less fortunate and may take it as me implicating superiority does this make sense?

I am not beating up on the kid, simply voicing my opinion that he should tone down on the publicity, do interviews cool but keep it to him self things like this make people swell his head, ever since the time magazine he threads about any publicity he gets, cool he's getting an interview but he's still just an average joe like all of us here.

HE'S GOING TO BE ON THE NETWORK NEWS! It's cool. I'd post about it and you damn well know you would too. Hell, people post when they find a crappy pair of speakers at the thrift store. You don't think national media exposure for our hobby merits a post?

The Off Topic Forum Moderator's Bottom Line:

The suitablility of a thread topic vis a vis AK and its Forum rules is the domain of the Admins/ Moderation Team. If a thread remains open, it is safe to assume that it is within AK guidelines.

If you take issue with the topic of a thread, your issue should be addressed to the Admins/ Moderation team, not the thread starter. If you don't like the topic, move on. If you don't like the thread starter, learn to use the Ignore function available in your User Control Panel.

Negative comments targeting ANY member are violations of AK Forum Rules and will be treated as such in the future.

Any questions regarding this, use PM.

Loud and clear Vintage-Yungin, loud and clear. Hopefully ALL the young members of AK will someday get their 15 minutes of fame. But being realistic, life will sometimes deprive some their hard-earned rewards, and heap upon others rewards they may not have earned.

Guys, I've been silent here, but I'm gonna say my peace, & then I won't say any more- looks to me like when ONE of us makes "The Big Time", we oughta all be PROUD of him-and NOT be critical. That's one of the things that, to me, sets us apart-When one of us has good fortune, we bring it here, share it w/the group, & we ALL get to share a little in it...I LOVE the stories of neat scores, of old equipment being rescued from the landfill, the wonderment & joy in someone's posts when he has just "discovered" vintage equipment-whether it is an old radio or TV, a rare & valuable piece of gear from the '70s that he's lusted after since college...I guess David, like a lot of us, can sometimes go a little "overboard" in his enthusiasm-but, can you blame him ? So come on, lighten up...& be proud of our collective good fortunes...

Not bad for an old cuss. +1

If I was to read a post where someone said they're doing something I don't think they should be doing, I'd usually just move on or at least keep it to myself. I would not take it upon myself to make a big speech about how they should run their gear. Or their life. Just my 2 cents.

Last Word On This From The Moderators

My post #115 obviously wasn't CLEAR enough. This thread is NOT a referendum on the OP, regardless of your position pro or con.

Any further posts offering opinions of the OP, whether good, bad, or indifferent, will be deleted as off-topic and the offending poster will be suspended.

And if THAT isn't clear enough, you'd better request clarification by PM, and NOT in this thread.

.....Karma....the good or bad emanations felt to be generated by someone or something.....

.....I notice it says the good or bad emanations, and in this referendum and specific reference, I believe there is obviously a choice to be made in guiding the projected karma rendered....since when, do we at AudioKarma not regard each other in positive ways with positive thoughts and attitudes?....since when, are honors graciously bestowed along the lines of audio not proudly reported and well received, no matter what the conditions or age of the reporter?....once again, it appears attitude is everything, and there ARE choices to be made in forming attitudes.....

.....Congratulations, David, and I'm looking forward to the airing of your REQUESTED involvement.....

The major reason I have always loved AudioKarma is that negativity is rarely seen, I hope that continues. I don't know about the rest of you, but I was taught at a very early age not to put anything into print unless I was willing to deal with the potential fallout. Of course this was way before the internet arrived.
In David's case, I don't blame you in the least. Everything I have ever read of yours, is always respectful and dignified. Whether you are 11 or 110 those are appealing qualities.
Congratulations on the piece, I look forward to seeing it.

Peace,

I think most of that negativity posting is some of the younger crowd here at AK. Not that all young AK'ers are that way, it is just a different attitude than the elders here (not that we can't get shitty too).

It is the anonymity of the net, and a zeitgeist of "I bested you" that leads to this. Dating shows/reality tv types are all about "OOHHH I told YOU!" or "Yeah, I let em have it!" Very coarse, very lowbrow attitudes in some of the other forums I visit.

AK is kept on the level by our fantastic moderators, and also by some of the senior members (duration, not age). It is the only website I've ever given donations/subscriptions.

VinylDavid, as a 12 yr vet of radio, I know how interviews go. We have time constraints, and are forced to keep things "on-topic". Nobody here is doubting any allegiance to AK. I cannot wait to see the piece.

Keep 'em spinning!

Wow... there's a lot going on here, all in one little thread. Let's see if I can summarize:

First, many feel that it can only be a good thing that David gets to talk about our hobby on national news, but it could easily be a bad thing if the topic turns to be about David, instead of about the hobby.

Second, when anyone gets their 15 minutes of fame, it almost always degenerates into a story about the person, instead of the topic.

Third, some people feel David has done well here and deserves some fame, while others feel there are more deserving young members who know more and have put in more quality (but not quantity) time here. Some feel this is sour grapes, others feel it's a justified response to David seeking fame.

Obviously, the many factions at work here aren't ever going to agree. And now, for the official AK view:

This thread demonstrates that it's impossible to discuss the fame (tiny and evanescent or otherwise) of a member without discussing the member, which isn't allowed. By agreeing to national news coverage, David invites the fame, and thus the discussion, but it still isn't allowed on AK. AK is about 'no attitude' and karma, and thus, if he's enjoying it and creating good publicity for our hobby, he has our congratulations and best wishes.

David, if you can come up with a link for your interview, please post it in a new thread. Everyone else, there will be no negative comments about other members, including David, in that new thread.

Thread closed.
