View Full Version : King Crimson Rawked last night but what is Fripp’s problem?

Last night KC played show 2 at the Keswick to a sold out crowd. Lineup as previously discussed was Levin-Fripp-Belew-Harrison-Mastelotto. Yeah yeah, it took two drummers to fill Bruford’s seat but it was pretty cool although they drowned out almost every note Levin played.

This was one of the oddest shows I have attended and I’ll get to why as I ramble. I had read on the net that Fripp starts his shows on time regardless of how many people are seated. I like that idea but 50% of concert goers are either fashionably late or outside smoking so as the show started I missed seeing most of the first 45 minutes due to people walking up and down the aisles. Sit the F down and shut up. I hate getting penalized for being on time.

There was barely an introduction besides all being hassled to turn off phones or be thrown out along with having my binoculars inspected for being a camera. The band walked out on stage and started playing at exactly 7:30 which is what was on the tickets.

I can’t list all the tunes played but a partial list would be as follows:
Vroom
Dinosaur
Walking on Air
Red
Thela Hun Ginjeet
Indiscipline
Elephant Talk
B’boom
Sex Sleep Eat Drink
Frame by Frame
Three of a Perfect Pair
A few others I can’t remember but here is a link to a review and list from earlier show.
http://blogcoward.com/archive/2008/0...how-Recap.aspx

As usual, Levin was a madman on his 10 string stick playing hundreds of notes a minute but overshadowed by the all too loud drums. Belew was almost his usual self in that he smiled the whole time while creating the strangest noises from his guitar. I categorize some of this as Controlled Noise. Gavin Harrison from Porky Tree appeared to be more relaxed and comfortable with Bruford chops than Mastelotto did but together they put out some great synchronized drumming.

Fripp hid behind a wall or an amp while remaining seated and motionless the whole show. I think the only people who could see him were those up front to the left. All I could see was the top of his balding head and a set of cans thru which he may have been listening to The Mamas and the Papas.

There was absolutely NO interaction with the audience. No intro of the musicians so if you were unaware of whos who, shame on you. There was no thank you after songs and about 30 seconds in which to clap before the next song. This was what was odd. Did Fripp forbid the band members to show that they appreciated the fact that several thousand people just payed $50 to see them play? Were they told they had to behave like arogant schmucks like himself? I don’t know what the deal was. Better yet, when the band did get up and gather front stage to bow to the crowd, Fripp ran off the back in the other direction so he was not there to bow. He did this 3 times since after 75 minutes, the band just quickly bowed and walked off the stage. I knew by the earlier posted set list they were not done yet so I remained seated for their return. They came back and played two more songs and walked off silently again. Still no Elephant Talk so I knew they would be back. They did finish up with ET and one more before one last Frippless bow to the crowd and it was done.

I have no idea what instrument, if any Fripp was playing and after seing Belew and his Power Trio last year, KC would have been fine without him last night.

Ha, and to throw in a comment for the Lip Syncing thread, they used sound tracks on Neurotica and Thela Hun Ginjeet.

All in all the show was superb and was very close to the show I saw in 1982 at the old Tower in Philly.

The show ended after 1 hour and 45 minutes of non stop music at about 9:20 so that Fripp could get his geriatric ass in bed by 10 pm.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. I have no idea what the Keswick is though. I loved seeing Levin tour with Anderson, Bruford Wakeman and Howe. You could hear many of his notes then thankfully... :music:

Fripp has been like that for a long time. Hiding in the dark seated on his stool showing no emotion and generally being an arrogant ass. I know this going in so if I ever saw King Crimson I would expect this from Fripp but too bad for his fans who paid good money to see HIM.

Anyway, glad you enjoyed the show Brian. That setlist looks fantastic.

I've seen HIM many times starting back to 1969 . Reached the point where Bob's boorish behavior has sucked the life out of their live performances for me.( I know...cut your nose...) But being the aging fanboy I will buy the Cd. Everyone else enjoy them live.

Fripp has been like that for a long time.

Yep. Years ago, he opened for G3 and Chris Duarte at Mud Island. The show started at 7. We were on time, and so was he. He played, solo, wrapped by his stage rig. He was totally immersed in his playing and simply walked off stage when he was finished.

I heard some amazing guitar synth work. Great music. No stage presence.

So my question is, did Fripp force the rest of the band to be emotionless and not speak?

When I saw Belew last year, he interacted with the audience between every song and was quite funny and likable. Last night the only remote reference to acknowledging the audience is when he missed his queue for a verse of Indiscipline and he laughed a bit and waited another 8 count.

Dunno. I'd have been more disappointed that Tony was drowned out.

Takes me back a bit. This was well worth seeing and now I like Thrak. I never realized that Mastelotto and Bruford played dueling drums all over that one but after last night, I could hear it today while spinning it.

Setlist was good except for Red being as far back as Fripp would allow. Even though it seemed to be over fast, they did play a lot of music so I was happy with it.

My first Crimso experience: Greg Lake -Going to be a superstar, got the looks and the chops.
Mike Giles- Another Ginger Baker or Keith Moon.
Ian McDonald- multi instruments , a real talent.Major influence on the first album.
Bob Fripp- sits on a stool? You know if they got rid of him they could be the new Beatles! What do I know?

Yeah I was but at least I had an idea what to listen for beneath the drums. But come to think of it, he never really played a solo to any degree.

Im looking forward to west coast gigs and thanks for the
write up on the show,Very good write up I must add!
I dont think its arrogance with fripp and think maybe the guy gets misunderstood alot,Maybe he's shy & reserved ?
Most people with brillance inside are some pretty weird
buggers in some ways and by the sounds that come out of the instruments he plays its obvious to me theres some
twisted magnificence going on.
Ive seen him with KC a few times,But a Odd show I saw
was with "Fripp & his league of crafty guitarists"
At a small club in Seattle called the Crocodile cafe.
(I think Peter buck from REM owns it or something like that)
12 people walk out onto a small sweaty stage and sit
in a semi-circle totally silent for about 14 minutes 37 sec's
then break into the same identical syncopated picking.
The notes alter and they play for about 20 minutes and stop
& stare in a Fripp guided meditation, silent for another
12 minutes,This went on for about 5 pieces then they walk
off the stage without a word.
I spent alot of money & effort to get to that show and
Ya know what,Id do it all over again in a heartbeat!

stage fright? Peter Gabriel dressed as a flower to deal with it, this may just be Fripp's coping mechanism.

It seems incredible, but as these guys are human just like all of us, Fripp may have reasons for being oddball other than arrogance.

I've seen him with KC in the early 80's and it was Belew who interacted with the audience. Yes, the show started right on time with no warm up group. I also saw Fripp with one of his ProjCKt bands where the obligitory announcment was made about smoking and cameras and all. He sat between two racks of gear the whole time. However, he did talk to the audience about how excited he was to be playing there
(Antone's, in Austin).

I guess I would have to see him now to form another opinion of his stage persona.
My beef with audiences is when they clap after every stinking solo someone plays.
It's almost a conditioned response as opposed to a heartfelt showing of appreciation.

I saw King Crimson sometime around 1970. Fripp sat on a stool the whole time even back then.

A flower?

but unfortunately I'll be missing KC. They're one of my favorite bands but their post-70s output never really did too much for me, besides Discipline, which is a masterpiece.
